Going back to college this fall after being out for a while and I have been taking a few practice tests because it feels like I have been out of math classes forever. I came across this problem and I've completely forgotten how to do it. I know it has to do with simplifying but can't figure it out. Could one of you math geniuses break this down step by step so that I don't look like a complete idiot when I take my placement test?

Balance the equation. Subtract like terms from either side.
Make one side equal to zero.
2x²+2x-4=0

Factor out the binomial. Solve for zero.
(2x-2)(x+2)=0
2x-2=0 x+2=0
2x=2 x=-2
x=2/2
x=1

It's been a really long time since I did that, heh.
Fixed, heh.

2x^2 + 2x - 4 = 0
x^2 + x - 2 = 0
(x + 2)(x - 1) = 0

x = 1, -2

100% of Asians can do that problem, so they were excluded from the sample.
