Trailer:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/thelastairbender/
I know it's directed my M. Night Shyamalanalama, but I'm hoping he won't screw it up.
I recently watched the whole series from start to finish, and it's really one of the best shows I've ever seen. Yes, I know it's aimed at kids, but that doesn't bother me.
Avatar is the shit. I fucking love that series.
I just finished watching it through for the second time last night, in fact (girlfriend had never seen it and wanted to know what the big deal was about the trailer we saw in the theatre recently).
The trailer looks badass. I'm a little "...eh?" on the casting so far, but the kid they got for Aang seems perfect. :)
Good series, my son watches it.
Shamalyan isnt my favorite director, but the previews I saw this past Saturday looked pretty good.

I'm hoping he won't have much of a role in the actual story or writing, and that he'll just be the guy pointing the camera around.
It's a planned trilogy, one movie for each season or "book". I just hope the first one does well enough to warrant telling the whole story.

I must highlight what you have already pointed out. This is a childrens cartoon, any adult person 20 years or older in this thread who admits they enjoy watching it is just 1 small step ahead of this guy in mental development:

No, but seriously, it's a really excellent series. Harry Potter was intended for children too.

Hey someone asked me to wear the costume, I don't always look like that. Bad hair day.

Unless the main characters are going to eat people, or at least eviscerate them in some way, Shamalyan is the wrong director. I question most movies who attempt to emulate cartoons for a "real life" approximation; one can use Transformers II and the upcoming G I Joe as examples of fail.

or he-man. or TMNT III (bc TMNT I and II are awesome). or Speed Racer. or Scooby Doo. or Dragon Ball Z
then again, you have an awesome movie like Ghostbusters.
So...meh.

Yeah, you have a point.

I dunno. I can still hope, I guess. I think one of the reasons movies based on cartoons have done poorly is that movie special effects have only recently caught up with being able to replicate what you'd see in a cartoon.
But Avatar has a much more in depth and continuous story compared to the movies in that list, which were generally one-shot episodes. Avatar could easily have been a comic book or graphic novel. And those seem to do (mostly) well in the box office.
Just got back. This movie was a steaming pile. What a fucking abomination :(

Roger Ebert:
"The Last Airbender" is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented. The laws of chance suggest that something should have gone right. Not here.

Not surprised. Shamalyan hasn’t put out a good movie since Unbreakable.

damn near every review has said the same thing. My 8 year old went to see it tonight and he liked it

Perhaps (haven't seen many/any of them), but this is the first time he's been given the chance to fuck up someone else's creation. The source material for this movie is absolutely phenomenal, it's amazing how badly he screwed the pooch on this.

Yeah. Just watched Book 1 on Netflix and its phenomenal. Nick is playing it on Monday nights right now I think.
Yeah, its a kid show, but I decided that sometimes a kids show is just fine. Life can get too serious sometimes.

I really liked the series, but the movie is excruciatingly bad. I almost walked out, but my girlfriend insisted we suffer through it. It completely fails at storyline, character development, casting, portrayal of bending, and most of the fight scenes. The graphics are decent, but not great.
General Iro was my favorite character in the series, and here he's no more than mediocre.

it was at 09% on rotten tomatoes yesterday. this is the worst movie of the year
A friend who has the same taste in movies saw it tonight and said it blows. I'll save the $10.00 ticket for something else.

Eclipse was good. For people who didn't read the books they gave a little bit of background which was nice. The fight scene was pretty cool.
Yeah, wasn't bad. The director of the Eclipse movie is the same one who did 30 Days of Night.

Best part of that movie is when the chick with an incredible ass is bound up. That ass is top shelf along with Zeta-Jones in Entrapment.
TLA sucks. :(
I thought it got a little better towards the end. I guess. I never saw the series. Mostly I was just staring blankly and critiquing the kids' stances and movements in my head. Someone explain to me why they have to be Tai Chi masters to "bend"?

This reminds me I kind of want to see the new karate kid. Jackie Chan could make a cool Miyagi, but I'm not too sure on will smith's kid.

Does a heck of a job, actually. Great movie. Far better than the first Karate Kid.

In the series, the four nations are based on various blended Asian cultures and martial arts styles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender#Fighting_styles
Waterbending was based on tai chi, firebending on shaolin kung fu, airbending is Ba Gua, and Earthbending is Hung Gar.
That said, it all looked stupid in the movie because they added so fucking much extraneous movement to every act of bending. One of the cool things about the depiction in the series is that every physical action the benders took actually corresponded to a manifested response in their appropriate element. If you want to "water whip" someone, you just flick your wrist at them, not this ten-second Narutard-style "I'm a magic neeeenja" bullshit.

Earthbending was Hung Gar. Except for Toph. Don't ask why I know this, I just do.

Um, that's totally correct. I don't know how I typed Ba Gua twice X.x
Toph was a different style, but I can't remember what it was, but it's because she was self-taught, and blind.

According to wikipedia, it's Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. PRAYING MANTIS!
Toph is awesome :)

I don't think it was the most horrible movie I've ever seen in theatre, but even having never seen the show, I could tell the movie didn't come close to its full potential. The graphics were good, but the flow of the movie was all off.
Also, since I don't really know anything about the show, I wasn't prepared for the whole "To Be Continued" bit. It was a tad depressing knowing I might have to sit through another one of these just to feel a little sense of completion.
EDIT: Although not my favorite character in the movie, I did enjoy seeing Aasif Mandvi in it. Daily Show, w00t!
My friend Adam is taking me to see this tomorrow (Yay free movies). Neither of us have seen it but we heard how lame it is, so we'll see.
Honestly, I'm just in it for the graphics. Mhm.
