I still think it's a horrible name, and it sucks that they're trying so hard to shed their origins.
Here's a quote from one of the guys that helped launch the channel.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.
Mr. Brooks said that when people who say they don’t like science fiction enjoy a film like “Star Wars,” they don’t think it’s science fiction; they think it’s a good movie.
“We spent a lot of time in the ’90s trying to distance the network from science fiction, which is largely why it’s called Sci Fi,” Mr. Brooks said. “It’s somewhat cooler and better than the name ‘Science Fiction.’ But even the name Sci Fi is limiting.”
Goddamn corporate monkies.

Yeah, the concept of re-branding always tripped me out. Like somehow changing the name changes the product. It's silly.

Their in-house movies are some of the worst you can find on cable, and that's saying something.

SyFy sounds like some women's shopping sale, like that BoGo shit you hear about a few times a year.
Speaking of their in-house movies, did they ever make the movie for that FEEDBACK character that won the "I Wanna Be a Superhero" reality show Stan Lee was behind?

I reckon they'll see a dip in viewing, then change it back.
I also agree with Fallen that their homegrown movies is the worst kind of dross out there. They are not even hilariously overstupid like the polished turds on Movies4Men (on Sky).

Damn it, Android, you know the series lost its roots in Ant-Shark 2: Sharks in Space.

To be fair to SciFi, they have very strict criteria for in house movies. They usually have around 2 mil for a budget, which is nothing, and very solid preconceptions on structure and format.

People must like them somewhere. They keep cranking them out.

Just because it had actors with down syndrome playing specops soldiers doesn't make it bad!

If you just want to veg, watching Sci fi can be fun.
Serious entertainment though? It might just be me, but I don't really find that on any of the networks. I watch honest to god movies (with a producer not related to most of the cast!) for that.

Heh, yes, I'm down for pretty much any campy old horror. Also old zombie movies

I feel like calling SyFy Siffy just to express my extreme displeasure about them changing the name. Seriously, WTF do they think they are going to gain by doing this?

I like siffy. Siffy is fun. Siffy makes me want to slap bottoms and wear a disco wig. I wish my name was siffy. Siffy is Jiffy. I'm calling SyFy siffy.

Sounds appropriately close to "syphilis", which I have about as much fondness for as this name change.
