From what I can gather (and plz don't quote me on this - there is a disclaimer on the top) it increases your defense while you're in offensive stance by the amount that the runestaff defends. So if you need a beginner staff for one of your lil newblets. Bid! Plenty to go around!

defenders aren't just for newb characters... the defender bonus also counts in defensive stance, so it helps you when a caster is most vulnerable, and also further augments their DS in defensive.

I use my 4x/4x dagger extensively (acts like an 8x dagger in defensive, and a 4x DB in offensive, essentially).

Too right, all I'm saying is that I have several affordable defender weapons here so that anyone (even lil folk) can own one.
