View Full Version : So I applied for readmission to school..

Hoping that a four year gap and my sorry ass performance last time I was there isn't too much and my old university lets me back in.

I had to write an explanation as to why I should be readmitted.. submitted the basic grown up.. have matured.. seeking fulfillment... etc. thing.

Any you guys have experience going back to college after an extended absence? Any knowledge as to how lenient readmission boards are?

I've transferred twice (I had a really good GPA the second time though):

Show up at the bureaucracy's offices every single fucking day and talk to the person who is the closest to submitting papers, or if you're really lucky, somebody who actually reviews admission (appeals?)

Are you doing an appeal or a general admission submission?

General admission. I wasn't kicked out or anything. Just did really shitty my three semesters there. First semester was put on academic probation.. second semester I got off of probation... third semester I withdrew from all classes. Never went back.

Might want to apply for a fresh start if you aren't worried about any credits you might have gotten and you're serious about doing well this time.

Yeah, just become best friends with the head honcho fuck-o at the registrar's office. Do stuff like academic advising in the meantime to show that you mean business.

What Stef said. I'm 27 and I'm still not finished. I did 2 years when I was 19-21 and then had a 5 year break. I didn't leave on bad terms, I just got a great job offer and life happened. But having to go through re-admissions I hear is a lot of work. If your GPA was shit, better off starting all over.

I have done this. As recently as last September. I tried to get back into Rice U after a five year absence. My record is a little more fucked than yours. Several warnings, 2 probabtions, and a withdraw/IP of 12 credit hours.

Rice is an ivy school, so I didnt hold much hope for getting back into it but I needed to be evaulated by the board so that my transfer to U of H would be squared away. They like to see closure with the school you ditched. I dont know why.

U of H took me back (I did some field work courses there) and even allowed me to transfer some of my Rice credits. Unfortunately I'm needing to take over all the coarses I either failed or withdrew from at Rice to clean up my transcript. Some of the specializing stuff doesnt apply. So check your school to make sure they still have the same programs, ie. (archaeology!). Also, U of H wanted me to take a personality test to determine my aptitudes. Then there was an interview and I also had to write an essay. The whole board process sort of made me feel like I was applying for a corporate officer job, lol, but it was well worth it. I dont know if they allow you to take courses outside where the aptitude test puts you. I tested into the masters i wanted.

Did you actually read that article? Did you see the other schools they cited?

Macalester, Kenyon, Colby, Reed, University of Rochester, and Skidmore to name a few. I wouldn't put too much credence on the weight of that article.

Also, it's fucking Newsweek.

If it wasn't for the fact that employers require that piece of paper (and for three years of drunken awesomeness), I probably wouldn't have even gone to college.

I'm pretty sure I was more book-smart in high school than at any point in time in college. Nor did I learn anything that would have taken longer than two days to learn on my own that I use at my job.

Nevertheless, good for you for trying to go back. Are you still in the armpit of the mid-Atlantic?

I just want to clean up the transcript. I dont care about those credits.

Unless you're going back for a fresh start, which I don't believe you described, you do know those F's and W's (or WF's) will still be on your transcript, right? Whether or not you can retake those classes once for the new grades to replace the old ones (F's or WF's) in your GPA is up to your school's policy I believe, but i'm like 99% sure the previous attempts aren't removed from your transcript.

4a6c1
06-29-2009, 12:50 AM
Yeah. No. That does not apply to me. Obviously. Since I am all powerful. F's and W's shall tremble in my wake. And the earth shall rejoice. And I will spare you and put you in my harem because your cat is my favorite suicide bomber.

I did a year at Saint Johns, then someone explained to me the concept of taking a year off from studies. Our high school councilor had never even mentioned the idea of deferred acceptance and taking a year off. She was more concerned with shuffling kids off to college to maintain the school's 100% acceptance and admission rate.

So I took a year off, did some classes back home that I liked and ended up ditching Liberal Arts, the classics and learning Greek for TIG welding, soldering and lost wax casting. I think my credits back at Saint Johns are good for 8 years, if I wanted to go back and finish up. Perhaps after I get this degree.

Actually Bob ... someone wrote a book in 2000 called "the hidden ivies" that compared the 30 listed schools to the Ivy schools they were patterned after.

A better moniker would be "Ivy like", but I'd argue that certain degrees from Rice will probably trump similar degrees from CheeseWizU.
