View Full Version : What is the Most Difficult Game You've Completed?

Fallen

As the title says, I was giving this topic some thought and I really can't think of any game I believe would be recognized as challenging that I have beat. Most of the games I have beat are RPGs, which just involve patience, not skill.

Obviously, games beat using any sort of cheat codes (or game genie if you're old enough) do not count. Same thing with emulators where you could save every time you took a step without getting killed.

So, I pose this question to all of you. What difficult game(s), or regular game on a vastly increased difficult have you completed without cheating?

To answer my own question, the most difficult game i've likely ever completed was Killer Instinct single player on the hardest difficult mode. Not very impressive.

I am going to try to attempt to beat Dead Space on Impossible mode. I figure if I can do that it would be considered completion of a difficult game.

Diablo II on Hardcore mode, all three difficulty levels plus the cow, etc, level.
Still more a thing of attrition, but one life makes you work at things a bit more.

What are the difficulty levels for that game? Normal/Nightmare/Hell/Hardcore? Something like that?

Hardcore, you play through whichever difficulty level you choose, but you only have one life. Die and your character gets wiped.

Paladin built around Zeal, you can output some insane damage that way. It's what finally did me in, too - some critter cast a damage reflection curse and I didn't realize until I saw my health bar just evaporate in nothing flat.

On the plus side, that did provide the motivation to finally put Diablo II to rest, heh.

lol that game is ridiculously hard.

I use cheats on most games, especially Zeldas. I'm not sure if studying key combos counts, but if not, then Tony Hawk Pro Skater on N64 (all the tapes at every level), and Minesweeper expert mode (83 seconds).

Damn, I'm not sure. I play all my games on the hardest difficulty or close to it.

But the one that comes to mind is God of War: Chains of Olympus. That last boss is the biggest fucker EVER.

Devil May Cry 3 probably also counts for something.

Do you usually rent games or buy (Steal/pirate) them, Ren? I tend to put games on easy mode because I rent them and want to be able to complete them before they have to go back. Though I suppose that isn't an issue with things like Gamefly.

I think some of the old NES games were the hardest because you couldn't save your progress so once you lost your three lives or whatever that was it. I think console games have gotten WAY easier over time for that reason alone.

I saw my roommate trying to play some game on a NES emulator and even with save state it took him a while. He had to save state like every three seconds in some parts and probably reloaded 1,000 times. I forget what game it was... Blaster Master maybe? Mike Tyson's Punch-out was another.

I'm not sure what the hardest one I beat was, but Karate Kid was very hard and I definitely did not beat that. Maybe Contra without the code? I used to play it with 30 lives but since that game is awesome and only takes like 20 minutes eventually I got to the point where I had everything memorized and now I can beat it with 3.

Battletoads. My brother played that shit for an entire summer and got to where we wouldn't kill each other and could actually both make it through the gauntlet. It's not a game where you can practice and your friend can practice and then you do 2 player and go. You've got to practice in 2 player mode and get to the point where you know how the other person is going to react in different areas.

See, I used to be a NetHack/Slash'EM player, but ADOM is so much better because there are no bones files! Getting a bunch of uber equipment just because you sucked last time just isn't very rewarding to me.

Honestly, if they could just pair a roguelike game developer with a graphics game developer they could make a kick ass adventure game with randomly generated items, a sandbox world, and infinite replayability because they are always ridiculously hard.

Yeah, I quit Paladin's Quest at first. But once I beat the other RPGs I had and had nothing else, I fired it up again. The walking is so slow in that game. And the story was kinda weak. But it had a lot of cool factor with how you hired your party members. The end boss battle in that game made me want to /wrists.

Okay, I didn't do this but my little brother did and even I was in agony watching him do it.

There's an optional end boss in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga. The guy had a bijillion HPs, he would auto-restore his power reserves when he hit his last cast, it would trigger his super ultimate attack that would also cast a mass confusion, HP reduction to 1 on your party. The only way to dodge the attack was to actually be under Sleep that his minions cast and have a skill attached that would auto-evade while slept. I watched him spend hours fighting the boss, he had to count how many spells the boss could cast before the ultimate wipe spell so he could time when to be put to sleep to avoid being blown out.

First thing I do when I play any RPG is try to get to the highest level feasibly possible ASAP, then keep a healthy buffer of levels whenever I enter a new area. Means a lot of grinding, but it essentially makes all RPGs simple.

Persona 3 was hard for me because it doesn't really let you do that. You get tired, and your companions all ditch out and go home. You can't grind.

Super Ghouls & Ghosts is so much more challenging (imho) than Gradius 3 it isn't even funny.

E-laser + shield + double back + spread missiles + speed = Eventually winning. Plus you could teleport levels ahead at four points in the game.

Gradius 3 also had the Contra code where if you entered left and right on the directional pad instead of the L and R buttons, it would go from fully upgrading your shit to self-destructing. That was pretty lolsome.

For a ridiculous piloting-shooter gameplay, check out Thunderbirds for the NES. Jeeze.

Actually, shit, I never actually beat Phantasy Star 4. I should go load that up. I'm at the final dungeon...like, right when you can now choose your fifth party member. Gotta go bitchslap Dark Force.

Also Kitsun brought up a Shin Megami Tensei game. I beat Persona 3, but I didn't play that on hard mode. According to my friend that recommended it to me, if I played on hard mode even I, a gaming masochist, would slit my wrists and not get into the SMT series. So I took his advice.

Did anyone ever play the Ultima games on the Apple IIe/Amiga/PC? The series was pretty well a pioneer for the Western RPG that wasn't D&D (though it certainly had more than a little bit of influence from it.) They were big through the 80's and early 90's, up until the 8th one, mid 90's. It wasn't as great, and the ninth one, late 90's, would've killed the series if it weren't intended to be the final one to begin with.

Anyway, the first few weren't tough. The third one was, but only because it was drastically different from how the first two were played. The fourth one, Quest of the Avatar, is regarded as one of the greatest RPG's ever made during the day. Basically you had to become the archetype (The Avatar) of virture, which meant never stealing, never running from a fight (unless it was an animal and not a bad man or a monster), never lie, things like that. It was difficult, but it was fun at the same time.

The fifth one, Warriors of Destiny, though? HOLY DOGSHIT BATMAN. That one was tough! Sad to say, I was never able to get through it without cheating. One of the requirements is to get your main character to level 8 before you can finish the last dungeon, and it takes 6400 experience to do that, assuming you never die, and there's plenty of ways to suffer cheap deaths. Not to mention that only the character that kills the monster got the experience, and we're talking, oh, 1-6 experience a kill. Took friggin' forever.

And even if you did die, you lost a level. The final dungeon remains at the top of my list of hate-filled memories of my early gaming days. However, a group of fans completely remade the game to run in the original Dungeon Siege engine, and it's FARKIN' ORESUM. It's got some bugs and such, but they took the original game and put so much more depth into it that it rivals many RPG's of the modern day. It's also easier. I may actually complete it someday soon. It's called Ultima 5: Lazarus, in case anyone is interested.

The line gun pisses me off. You NEED it, especially for those wall mounted fuckers that you should use mines to kill. On impossible, though, the gun is so slow, even fully upgraded, that a guy can run up and beat your ass while you're shooting him. I used it only when my plasma cutter was out of rounds, or people grouped up.

My primary weapon was the Plasma cutter. It is the best weapon in the game. I bought the Pulse rifle and upgraded it completely for the last battle. Can't beat it against that guy. He actually had a few surprises for me on impossible. Just a great, great game. Can't wait for Extraction.

I agree with a lot of the above.

Battletoads
7th Saga - I thought the game was neat until I got to the first "other character" fight in which I got beat down constantly. The problem is that if you grind to get to a higher level you're fucked b/c "the other" spawns at your level. It prevented the easy way out of just grinding.

I'm thinking of trying to unlock the plasma-cutter only achievement for a new game.

I did Gears of War on Hardcore solo.

Was thinking of doing Gears of War 2 on Hardcore solo, haven't gotten around to it.

Still haven't beaten the last level in CoD4 on the hardest difficulty

Ninja Gaiden on the XBox was pretty damn hard.

Kid Icarus back in the NES was pretty hard in itself, as was pretty much any Battletoads game.

I actually got past the Dam level where you have to disarm the bombs in TMNT only to find out that the Foot Clan start driving Bulldozers in the overworld next stage

Beating any of the Halo's or Gears on the hardest difficulty Non-co op is definitely an achievement worth mentioning in this thread. Even if you dont run out of lives, you still have to clear entire parts of a board before you hit the next save point, which is just insanely difficult. You can't just have one guy hang back and send wave after wave of suicide runs at the guys.

For some reason, I had a bitch of a time trying to beat the Hero of Kvatch mission in Oblivion. I was just high enough of a level to get monster spawns equipped with glass and daedric shit, but couldn't do jack to them.

Also, that fucking bike level in Battletoads. Never again.

EDIT: Seriously. Youtube Battletoads bike. Then cringe.

Battletoads is infamous for how hard/bad that level was.

< Hero of Kvatch was hard! >

Hey, is there an actual city? Someone got me the Frostcrag Spire update that has a teleport to Kvatch's mages guild.

I honestly don't remember the game's format that well. Would you say Gear's hardest level of difficulty is more or less challenging than Halo's?

Meh. I'd say lack of ammo towards the end of GoW outdoes the tactical difficulties of Halo, but I'm not a big Halo'er. I played the 2nd.

Devil May Cry 2 or 3 I think was the hardest game I can ever remember beating--but there were definitely some fucking bullshit games for NES.

Anyone remember that stage on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with the electric seaweed and the swimming? So fucking maddening.
