E3 2009 brought the official announcement for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Is it just me, or should Blizzard be scrambling to think of something that can prevent them from being pushed aside, should the new MMO actually work?

It has been established that a Star Wars MMO can carry a very healthy population, and should BioWare do the project justice, I could easily see a great deal of the 20-40somethings in WoW moving to a more mature experience.

Blizzard should but I hope they don't. The more subscribers TOR rakes in, the more money Simu makes.

From the same sources i heard that they are creating a new MMO, well one is in the works. And it is based on Star Craft.

I just hope it's not a grind at the end. Every MMO I've played has lost me at the endgame, as I have zero interest in raiding.

I'm still waiting for a successor to PlanetSide to come along. When that game first launched, extended 200 vs. 200 battles were common.

I know I'm going to play it.

BFRs fucked that game. I only really played the beta hardcore...and the beta was awesome.

World of Starcraft next

World of Diablo after

That is completely wrong. The next gen MMO they're working on is a brand new IP.

I could never get into that game. I tried it for a few months, I just didn't enjoy it. I played DAOC and that was fun but got old real fast. I figured they were both doomed to fail eventually.

WoW on the other hand, has yet to disappoint me with their updates and expansions. It's why I keep coming back.

Some Rogue

AoC, LotRO, Warhammer, Guild Wars, etc.

The list of WoW killers is pretty long. The only thing that will kill WoW is WoW.

I think they're doing a pretty good job of killing themselves at the moment.

Whether you liked it or not doesn't change the fact that when EQ was at the peak of its popularity, people said it was unkillable.

Something will come along that will kill WoW eventually.

WoW, just like EQ will be responsible for their eventual downfall.

Well I failed to mention that I wasn't the only one who felt this way, but you're right, the same was said about EQ.

Everytime a new game comes out, people are sure that it will kill WoW. Like Some Rogue said, only WoW will kill WoW. It's not like people don't take on more than one game at a time anyway. And we're talking about a game that probably won't see the light of day for another year or two.

All of the games that were supposed to "kill" WoW were lacking something MAJOR.

A STAR WARS branded game with an already VERY respectable franchise history (in the RPG genre, anyway) could take down anything in its way if it's done the right way.

WoW is pissing people off more and more with every patch, and I know a solid 40% of the people I personally know are wanting something a bit more mature for their gaming time.

Realistically, WoW wont be "killed" by The Old Republic; it could be the straw that breaks the camel's back, though.

And it's possible that with every person you know that is pissed off at the game, I meet and/or know one that is loving the game more and more.

The focus is just shifting to a different audience: the casual players, and the hardcore players are getting upset.

Personally I don't think it's possible to please the hardcore players completely. They'll always bitch about something that they killed themselves for that the casual player is getting now.

Is it just me or does that guy on right right look more like Dark Helmet than Vader?

...and you think WoW can survive off of casual players alone?

Good luck with that.

I think it can, at least for a couple of years yet. Most people I know in RL who play WoW are much less casual than me and I only raid twice a week. Even then I only hit half of Naxx and half of Ulduar.

Two of the guys I work with don't even have capped toons yet and they have been playing over a year now. Two others have capped toons but to my knowledge do not raid (OS and VoA don't count). Some guys I used to work with have capped toons and have raided in the past but are casual players now. Pretty much everyone in my guild defines themselves as casual players although they do raid most every week so that's debatable.

Raiders inspire development of new material, but there is plenty of old content that most casuals have never seen or have yet to fully experience. Hell, I've been playing for 4 years (?) and haven't done the Alliance thing yet (past level 8).

Yep. The hardcore players do not represent the majority of their playerbase. They're just the loudest.

WoW has more casual players than most if not all MMOs have for their entire playerbase.

I honestly couldn't care less if ninety percent of their player base was "casual"... losing a chunk equal to two or three percent is HUGE, much less ten.

What does Clint Eastwood have to do with this MMORPG? I must have missed something in the video clip?

Mythic will buy the rights to the IP and fuck it up as bad as Warhammer.

Apparently early alpha. Actual gameplay doesn't start until around 3:25 -- everything before that is basically just scenery.

Someone else already has the rights for 40k can't remember who but they're working on a mmo for it.

New video was released today. Not as exciting as the first.. but it talks about how all the NPCs in the game will be fully voiced:

4 part video -- parts 2, 3, and 4 can be viewed using the sidebar thing.

I'm still undecided. I'll buy the game for sure. I just hope it keeps me entertained longer than WoW.
