View Full Version : Hunting for Silver at lower trains

Hello,
I'm just back to Gemstone IV having played only briefly back in the AOL days (highest character was about 15 or so).
I've looked through the forums and answered most of my questions about training, etc, but I haven't been able to find much good information about good areas to hunt if you're looking to make some money (which I'll need to purchase some rudimentary enchanted equipment).
Right now I'm killing gnomes up in Icemule, but I'm almost too far over their training (I'm at 7 atm). Back in the day Silverback Orcs used to be a cash cow, but I have no idea what areas/monsters are good to hunt for money now-a-days.
Could those more knowledgeable than me give me a few suggestions for the level ranges 7-10, 10-13, 13-16, and so on? I'd greatly appreciate it! Traveling isn't an issue for me.
Thanks

I forgot to note that my character has no training in the areas of skinning, although if there are some really good skinning spots I'd appreciate it if you could mention those as well!
Edit: Ack, started with a double post. Bad form.

Since you're in Icemule, this is what I'd suggest:
Snowy Cockatrices or Snow Spectres until 9 or 10 (depending on your profession)
Silverback Orcs until 14 or 15
Mountain Ogres / Dark Shamblers until 18 or 19
then, if you're thinking coins, move to River's Rest and hunt Krolvins, or move to Wehnimer's and hunt Reivers (again, depending on your profession).

Thanks! I'm taking it then that there really isn't a 'crazy good' spot to hunt like Silverback Orcs were in the day? If so, I wouldn't mind traveling to it even if it's as far away as Ta'Vaalor :)
I was thinking about joining the Guardians of Sunfist, so I'll have to be killing Grimswarm anyways (it appears). Are there any particularly good Grimswarm hunting areas at lower levels?
Also, I'm currently a sword and board Bard, but plan on converting to a 'pure' Bard and hunting with a 2H Instrument using 1030 later on.

The treasure system was changed so that it weighs hunting pressure and level. So the more you hunt above your level, and the fewer other people in the area, supposedly the better the treasure will be.
I think it's pretty bullshit and the system really doesn't work that way, but in theory that's how it goes. Skinning is really the way to go. In lower levels, hunt stags in Vaalor or Illistim

If you don't skin, you're missing out on a ton of free silvers. The optimal thing to do would be to find a creature that drops loot AND can be skinned. Preferably in a very remote area like Zul Logoth. Otherwise, find the most out of the way place you can (Again, like Zul Logoth), and farm the crap out of it.
Icemule is fairly well populated. I wouldn't hunt there if you are encountering anyone else on your hunts.

I was reading about the treasure system a little bit and remember a NIR posting that it has to be an underhunted spot in order to get above average loot(along with uphunting), but doesn't necessarily mean a creature isn't hunted as much won't get above average loot. Does this mean that places like Zul Logoth that aren't hunted a lot won't have better treasure just because there is a lower population, and it would be better to find a place in the Landing or Mule that has a higher population but find something that isn't hunted at all?
And I just found the post by Warden it says:
On that last point, another thing to consider is that just because creature X is hunted much less than creature Y doesn't mean that creature X is an underhunted creature. It may well be that creature X's hunting pressure is normal when compared to the entire peer group. For example, around Wehnimer's Landing, ogre warriors are hunted significantly less than arch wights and fire guardians, currently. It's not that ogre warriors are underhunted (they're normal for their group), it's that the arch wights and fire guardians are heavily overhunted. There are several other creatures in that peer group, though, that are underhunted and dropping above average loot.
So does it take the average amount of people in an area and then divide by how many hunt in that certain area?

That's rather disappointing about the skinning as Bards are already so training point starved it'll be hard to fit any kind of reasonable first aid or survival into my training :(
What kind of increase in silver intake are we talking here with regards to skinning? Will I be doubling my silver per hunt if I'm a skinner and hunting creatures with skins vs. creatures that drop silver/treasure? What about if I'm hunting (what you suggested) creatures that drop skins and treasure?
Lockrebezz - a very interesting point about whether or not moving to an underpopulated town affects the treasure loot system. Is the loot system looking at creatures that level as a whole across the entire world? Or is it only looking at creatures that level around the area you are in.. anyone have further input on this?

I actually dropped 1x survival/FA on my paladin because I didn't think the TP investment was worth it. Part of the problem was there isn't alot to skin where I was hunting and the skins I did get just were not worth the effort. I'll eventually get it back, but for now I was happy to gain back the hundreds of TPs I had invested in it.

Off-topic so I'm posting a new reply, but I noticed this PsiNet thing just now on the other forums. It seems like a fairly active sub-group. Are the majority of players that use this site also using PsiNet while playing? If so, does that mean that the majority of people are using the Wizard vs. StormFront? Or do people use the Wizard only when they want to utilize the capabilities of PsiNet and then switch back?

remember you can fixskills unlimited for the first month, so you can do all physical skills and skinning, then switch to a more traditional bard training later on.
Skinning will give you a much more consistent income. With stags it was minimal 200-300 per crappy antler, and then it went up to 7k-10k with a seven-tine rack.

You can use PSINET with stormfront. From what I have seen more then half the players logged in at any given time are using psinet.

Active Players: 205

Use WHO HELP for more options.
>psinet who
You request a count of people linked to PsiNet. (PSINET WHO FULL for a full list.)
The PsiNet informs you that there are 100 people currently linked with it.
So about half of the people on currently are using Psinet. It usually stays around half but i've seen it up to about 3/4s. I think most people either use Psinet or Lich all the time there logged in as it is very useful. The most useful thing that I have used so far is the ATLAS function. This function, I don't think, wasn't available 3-4 years ago when I last used it. But it basically lets you look at all of Tsorans maps and lets you pick out a room and moves you from your current room to the room you want. This has helped me get rid of a lot of scripts and made travel a lot easier.

my bard singles in FA, Survival, and Trading. he also shits on everything. not only is it possible, it's worthwhile. i probably make an extra 25k per hunt skinning aivren or caedera in the Rift. 3-4 hunts per hour = well, you do the math.
edit: obviously I'm older than you, but I don't see any reason why this isn't possible at younger levels.

Vaalor's Cemetary was usually rock solid for me, from 5-12ish. Better than the Toadwort and that junk at least.

Great thanks for the advice on the skinning factor - I'll figure out a way to push at least 1x FA and Survival into my training plan. On another note, Krakiipedia says that factors that improve skinning are kneeling and the weapon used to skin with (I'm assuming a dagger is best). Are these facts accurate? I seem to remember that damaging a creature with physical wounds decreased skin quality.. is the area of the skin and the injury taken into account (i.e. if I'm hunting rapid squirrels which skin for squirrel tails, can I fuck up their legs or body and still get max quality skins from them)? Is there any other way to improve skin quality outside of FA/Survival training, dexterity, and 604?
Thanks for the advice on PsiNet usefulness - I'm going to try and set it up now especially for the map usage! That'd be really awesome as a person who has forgotten where most things are and hasn't even seen most of the new towns yet.
Also thanks again for being such a helpful community to a newbie :)

I highly suggest the first thing you do once you get PSINET setup is find the atlas room number for common rooms you visit and alias them:
ALIAS IBANK=GOTO <icemule bank room #>
ALIAS ISKIN=GOTO <icemule skinner room #>
(i preceed all my gotos with a I/W/S/IL/TV/etc for the town but that's just me).
You can find the room number by opening the ATLAS and shift clicking a room or going that and it will tell you the # in the title bar on the atlas window.
You have to download the maps from www.tsoran.com and put them in one of the atlas folders.

Thanks for the PsiNet advice there - I have to remember to keep on hunting and do this setup/research stuff while becoming non-fried tho!
My character ingame is named Kayleah, incase I run into any of you!

Not sure if it's possible for you, but you might investigate if Simu can find your old characters and re-activate one or more of them. You'd be amazed how valueable what seemed like crappy gear at the time would be these days. I re-activated my old level 13 warrior and he had a TD boosting shield, somewhat crit padded chain hauberk, and some other various clothing items that equated to well over 20 million in silver value.

Don't forget to get a disk before each hunt, and pick up armor and weapons.
Check the gear in the area you're hunting and snag one of each piece of gear, and check the value. Claids sell for 398 silvers, augmented chain and hauberk for 195 silvers. It seems small at first but 3184 silvers per hunt, assuming you pick up claids only, racks up.

If you are already in a room and want to save getting back to it in an alias, the easiest way to get the room ID is to type "whereami"
>whereami
You are in room #1000.
Exits:
Cardinal: Northeast -> 1001 [Town Square, Northeast]
...
Also, with atlas' built in library function there is an entry for oft visited rooms. Type "?atlas" in game. Here is the current data saved in it...

AH nice I didn't know about ?atlas. I never use whereami since I always have atlas open and it tells you the room# on the app title.
You're a bard - I hope you're 1004'ing your gems.
If you have FWI access, feel free to poke me (Silverphenix in game, or PM me here on the PC), and I'll meet you there to sing.
Actually, Lumi is in Icemule right now, anyway, so if you're still there, I can meet there, too.

Lesser orcs drop good gear if you have the DS. If you want to stay in Icemule everything down in the well drops great loot.

I came back after almost 5 years out and they still had my characters/gear on both accounts. I am not sure if there is a time limit or whatnot but the people in customer service were insanely helpful to me. Welcome back, too!

hunting in groups is also recommended. when I hunt with even just one other person the loot triples. plus it makes the game more fun.

Yeah it's been quite awhile! You all are awesome with all the help.
I did manage to get my characters back and haven't decided now if I want to continue one of them or start a new one (my main back then was a dwarven warwizard).. but at least I have my 4x fel hafter now :)
Also..
PsiNet has to be THE SINGLE BEST THING IN THE WORLD EVER! Instead of a town seemingly too far away to be worth going to and exploring.. now it's just a button click away! The atlas makes the game so much more assessable than I'd ever hoped! Thanks so much for the help with it I wouldn't have downloaded it without the advice.

That fel hafter is worth about 8 mil or so right now.
Be sure you get every piece of gear you had back then checked out before selling things. If you have your old characters with their old gear, a lot of that stuff could end up being worth millions in silver. Use the appraisals folder in the market place on this forum to find out values for gear and items.
Some of the most mundane items can be worth a ton. Got yourself a pair of eel skin boots with large pockets? Worth millions. Have one of those fringed doeskin vest? Millions. Once popular off-the rack forest-green brigadine armor? Lots of millions.
If you have your old characters, check to see if you can re-allocate their stats. If not, they probably aren't very well placed with current gemstone, and you'd probably be better off starting over. If they are, or you got lucky and rolled them up with stats that work currently, then you might just forgo the week or two getting to level 15.
Then again, a lot of the old character names (mine included) were just dreadful... That alone might be enough incentive to start over.

Just did a fast run thru the stags...
31 Skins: a huge rack of eight-tined antlers, a pair of forked antlers (x11), a pair of spike antlers (x10), a pair of three-tined antlers (x7), a rack of four-tined antlers, a wide rack of seven-tined antlers
1 Boxes: a battered brass coffer
5 Wands: an aquamarine wand, a golden wand, a pale thanot wand, a silver wand, a twisted wand
2 Reagents: an ayanad crystal, a s'ayanad crystal
1 Scrolls: a piece of charred paper
1 Magic: a black crystal
>app back
You ask Ghaerdish to appraise the contents of a translucent spidersilk backpack.
Ghaerdish takes the spidersilk backpack and inspects the contents carefully before saying, " There are 26 items that I do not deal with at all. I did find 31 items that I'll give you 45933 silver for, if you want to sell."
Ghaerdish then returns a translucent spidersilk backpack to you.
I just might make a script to hunt these, not bad for ten minutes
