So the wife has spoken a few words of trying to go back to school now that the kid is old enough for school, so she's pokin around {wherever} looking at what might be good.. She's said a few names to me, but nothing serious..

I was poking around several of the universities websites trying to see their information, but I cant seem to find the cost of grad studies anywhere.

Not sure how it normally works - as I opted out of the whole normal college route and went into culinary school.

I know my brother is getting his Ph.D, but they are paying him (pennies).. but thats not quite the same?

My wifes MBA cost like 30+ grand but that was at TCU which is on the expensive end of the non-ivy league types. Thankfully her company paid for it =).

Oh fuck me, we cant afford that shit.

Who wants to pay to see pics of me naked, so I can send her to grad school?

You can probably do it at a state school for 10-15k if it's a ~2 year track. And there is always grants/Financial aid. I will say that in some fields, grad school won't pay for itself very quickly.

Yeah. Look at state school. If you're not already rolling in cash, and have a family, that's the best route.

And as Bhuryn said..it really depends what degree she's going for. Some are just not worth the money. Take that from a college dropout still working on his Masters.

does she actually want a specific degree, or does she just want out of the house?

well, she has a BA in anthropology, and pretty much any job she's looked at required a masters.. not that you cant apply for it if you dont have it :)

I know she's been thinking about it since she got her BA (3 years ago), but as I've been working on the move since then, she hasnt tried to go yet, and she wanted to wait til the boy was in school.

america is stupid with its' educational system finances

As I have come to learn, anthropology is a huge waste of a degree. All my friends who can't find decent work have an anthropology degree. I would strongly look at the job market and see what she likes to do before leaping into a masters program. Education can be a waste in a lot of career choices.

QFT. I consider myself a pretty smart guy. But without reasonable financial help, a high level education is almost impossible at this time. I ended up paying $48.,000 mother-fucking-dollars a year for my CompSci classes. You go in thinking the education is going to make you rich...you come out feeling like a moron for wasting so much money.

I agree that anthro is a useless degree for the most part, but I dont think she has any incling on using it as a teaching degree....

It really depends on what the goal is. She isn't going to be able to field work with kids. My wife had grad school paid for, but her grants didn't cover living expenses. Even after her program, most of her friends have been unable to find work. She got a sweet job, but it required that we move to Indiana. It doesn't sound like you guys are in a place where you can go job chasing.

A grad degree in anthropology would open up teaching the BA/BS anthro classes at colleges in states with education requirements like Texas. You don't need an education degree persay, just the next degree up the food chain.

qualify, but really, you won't get a job. There are scores of Phd's looking for the same work. That is why my original question was about what she wanted to do with it. If she just wants to take classes to feel better about herself or get out of the house, go for it. If she wants to work, a Masters won't cut it.

IMPORTANT

If you are trying to get a PhD in a humanity, if the school will not pay you (e.g. no tuition, plus you get a living stpiend of 12k+/yr), then you should not be going.

My wife is getting her PhD from UCLA and there are so many kids there who are paying tuition to get a degree and they'll never find a job when they get out.

It's pretty sad.

That is where my wife and I went too. (Go Bruins) Like I say, we got lucky...sort of. We had to leave wonderful L.A. for shittington, but a job is a job.

yup Bloomington. I hear you on L.A. I said the same thing. I couldn't wait to leave. But now, I would give my right arm to go back. Hell, I'd give my right arm to just be able to eat at AOC.

I recommend getting in on a Teaching Assistant type program at a public school. My grad degree was free, which is great since I don't use it at all.

The other option is getting a lead professor to take you on as a Research Assistant. You do their dirty work for research and they get you access to stipends and/or reduced tuition.

I actually did a combo of both, so I got access to in-state tuition rates (when I was from out of state), got my tuition paid for, and got around 1k a month stipend.
