View Full Version : So what's the point?

Just cancelled my Plat subscription. I tried it for a few months but I couldn't figure the point. There's RP in Prime, more than ya see in the "tight-knit" community, when they're not powerhunting all over the world.
Mostly RP in Plat's chatter over the net. I don't have to pay $ for a IC chatroom, they're all over the Internet. for free.
I guess Plat's for people who don't want anyone else in their hunting areas and want lots and lots of alterations. You wanna pay for that, cool

Though I havent played, I have heard there isnt many non-roleplayers around at all. Everyone there either hunts or is very much into active roleplaying.
Being able to walk around without hearing sleeping a sec, or just 2000 pages till train! would be worth the extra cash.
Also, I am guessing as you say, it is a more tightly knit community. Everyone will know your character if you stick to a single one, and you will know theirs. Those that roleplay well will stand out much more than one in prime, and set the standard for whatever race/culture/deity driven RP that they use.
Just a guess.

I tried plat, didn't like it. I saw no real benefit in paying that kind of cash.

I'm saying it isn't a tight knit community at all. Yeah, people drop what they're doing to do rescues, but mostly they keep to themselves.

Plat = Fake Gemstone

I played it when it started, when it had about 200 or so people. Back then it was fun. Nowadays the peaks are what, 75 at most? And considering that there are so many towns and so many places to hunt, everyone is scattered all over the world. How fun is that? I stopped playing because it got lonely. At least in the regular game you can always find someone to interact with.
Yeah, I had the same experience when I tried it. It was just so...emtpy. And it felt fake like whatever I did there didn't count because it wasn't the real game.

Same here. There'd be three people in town and everyone else scattered, fuck that. Only time you'd see anyone is in a rescue or if a merchant's about. I could set up a chatroom and play Nintendo at the same time and get that and I wouldn't pay extra a month to do it.

You could always meet several people then arrange times in game where you could meet. Effort people!
You shouldn't have to exert effort to relax and enjoy your time.

People say the main reason they dont like platinum is that there isnt alot of people to interact with. I suggest a method to solve the problem. Its like starving to death because you dont wish to put forth the effort to get food. You have only yourself to blame.
Except, there is a fundamental difference between starving to death and entertaining yourself.

When playing Gemstone is considered the same basic need as food, someone shoot me and put me out of my misery. :D
Besides, I like variety in my gaming. I don't want to interact with the same 10 people every single day. Sure I interact with perhaps the same handful now, but at least there always a complete different handful that I never met before. Once you know everyone in town, it loses something in the fun, which is why I will never live in a town where everyone knows each other. Blech.

Yeah. In Prime there's lots of people and I can interact with whosever around. I don't have to set up frigging appointments to RP.

Wow this thread just caught my attention..heh.
Sorry to hear that those of you who left didn't have a pleasant experience in Plat...but I have to agree with Fallen. Yes, there are those who stay to themselves and hunt or whatever, but there are plenty of people who do roleplay.
I never had any trouble finding people to roleplay/interact with. After talking to/listening to different people who say they are/were disappointed with Plat, I think some people have a misconception of what Plat is. They seem to think that the minute you log in, BAM! People are right there waiting for you to walk out of the dark alley, guide you by the hand and give you a bunch of stuff...then walk you through the town where you're introduced to every person who plays Plat and they're immediately your friend..and during the course of these events, you get this 3x RPA.
It doesn't work that way. You do have to make an effort to get to know folks, you do have to seek out roleplayers. But you have to do that in Prime too, last I checked. In all honesty, I can't imagine that there are too many people who'd not interact with you or give you the brush off if you attempt to interact with them. Granted they all might not be all warm and fuzzy, willing to 'adopt' you because that's just not the personality of their characters...but then some are.
Another issue for people in Plat is the whole 30-day thing. For a while, people would come into Plat, and the people there would really go all out. Give them a bunch of silver, take them hunting, outfit them completely, pretty much empty their lockers for them etc. etc. Only to never see or hear from them again once the 30 day trial is up. That's made a lot of people reluctant to reach out in that manner to the more new characters. They'll interact with you, sure...but they wait til they see you around a little longer than 4 weeks. Not that I'm saying it's an excuse...but it's a reason.
It has nothing to do with the merchants and finding stuff for me..like previously mentioned, how much fun is it if you're playing alone? I wouldn't know, cause I don't play alone (except when I'm on at like 8am or so and there's only 24 or so people about) I don't know, I guess I'm just different. Like anyone else, when I started playing Plat (it will be 3 years this July) ..I knew no one, started from scratch, had nothing to my name and there were even less players than there are now (It was still $80 per month then) but I met a lot of interesting characters, and loved every minute of my time there. So much to the point that I could and would never play Prime again.

Hey, I loved plat. I wish I could afford it :(
I was the king of Icemule. Thats right, it was MY town BITCH! ::cackles::
Yeh..but anyway...That was back before the portal system..which made things kinda fun. It SERIOUSLY made you think before acting..when you know the only person around to save your ass is in Solhaven..its 4am..and you PRAY TO GOD that person is not afk if you do bite it. Heh. Good times there.

I tried Plat like twice.
It was just simply too desolated for me to tolerate.
I'd rather see a lot of people about town, even if some are idiots... than it being just me and a handful of others in town.
It really seemed more like "Ghost-Stone" where all the towns are practically ghost towns.

Since its so desolate then the critter must drop alot of good loot?
I may give it a try, doesn't seem so bad actually, 200 people online would just give me fond memories of GS back in the day. Although I paid way more for it then, but by comparison (to prime) it hasn't quite struck me as a good value. I haven't tried the trial yet so maybe I will someday.

I've played in LARPs with player bases the size of Plat's that are filled with fantastic RP. The problem with Gemstone is there seems to be a steady percentage of people who I enjoy spending time with in either game. That's like 100 or so people in Prime. That's like... two or three in Plat.
It's not that Khaladon or any of the other staff that work over there are bad. The players just don't live up to the billing.

If anyone wants to get a free trial of plat, move to Zul'Gloth.
Or email Khaladon and ask him.
Either way they're about the same in experience.

It ain't 200, Fengus, it's more like 50. On a good day. And yeah, there's lots of loot, the critters are rich and you get lots of alters.
Just about as many folk to talk to as you find in Prime. For more jack per month.

I guess it's not for everyone. (well it certainly isn't.)
I'd never...ever...go back to prime. As small as Plat is and as much as people want to bash the Plat folks...I still find I enjoy myself a great deal in Plat. I've gotten to know more than just 2 or 3 people in Plat in my time there...I've made lots of friends and have a great time. There's no way I could have that level of enjoyment of Gemstone in prime. ::shrugs:: To each their own, I guess.

Sure. Some of them are very nice. Doesn't mean they're stellar "elite" roleplayers... or even all that stable. In addition, you've got Jay... reason enough to quit right there and run screaming.

As long as you ignore Jay IRL and just RP with his characters, you'r egood.

Hey! Pain is great! Zary actually liked her, but then, Zary never was wrapped too tight.
I remember Colinjames. I think I had fun with Warriorbird's character as well. Especially if he was deceased instead of Zary.
Plat is good, like folks have said, it depends on the player. We dont all like the same thing.

Zary left quite some time ago. Although I plan (hopefully) to be back in GS by mid-summer, I have no immediate plans to wake Zary up anytime soon. Havent played Plat in a good while, probably August of last year, I think.
The Fruitcake still haunts my dreams however. Darn her!

Plat isn't for me simply because even if I could afford to spend that much for simple access to a game, I know several friends of mine in GS wouldn't be able to afford it.
Well I could make more friends right and visit my old GS friends back in prime when I feel like it? I could, I'm sure.
Just that it doesn't work that way :)
The average person only has so much time, and you generally end up with an all or nothing mentality. This is the reason I see plat failing really. For the merits of the game: small community, more one on one staff attention, everyone knowing your name etc, it lacks an influx of new faces because: 1. it's been given a bad rap. 2. it's cost prohibitive for both the average first time gamer and some people who have been simu customers for years. This has a mushroom effect.
I'd like to think most of the gamers who came to GS did so to interact with others and refine a specific personna. It's a drastic change to walk away from friends, (as we've seen that's the general addiction of GSIV prime anyway). I'm quite positive that I personally could not do it assured that the cost is prohibitive to several that I care for.

I visited plat for a month. It was fun and entertaining. I sat in the small park for the most part, and healed what I could. I think I got my char Fixail to like 5... ::shrug::
If you have never been to plat and want to try it, I suggest hitting the official forums, and asking cookie man to hook you up with a free month to check it out. he seemed real cool about doing that.
Someday I hope to go back, but not right now.
Like some already mentioned, it gets lonely there, and in part that was my fault, because of the hours I kept. Also, I didn't meet anyone that was young like my char, so it was real boring, and me being a empath just doesn't cut it.
The last thing is that I had made a ton of friends in Prime, and me playing plat was like abandoning them. So the "this is not real GS feeling was there for me".

I got a free trial from Khaladon for a month, played a bard who couldn't speak. I was making iron for the blacksmith, and had a great time when a giant found me and I grabbed a piece of charcoal to draw rudimentary pictures on the ground.
My plan was that the bard would only play instruments, and express him that way. But then I realized all my spells involved singing or, in the MnE case, preparing them by chanting. That was too inconsistent for me, so I quit.
But I enjoyed the short time I was there. I don't even remember the name I had for my bard in the game. I think it might be one of the names I have for one of my characters in prime, now.
