View Full Version : History of the PC

I was trying to think back to my earliest recollections of the PC, and am honestly drawing a blank. When was the PC started? Was Kranar always the main man in charge? I know we've gone through several iterations of the board, and this website has outlasted its competition. I remember WAY back when there was another fan message board, but I think that went defunct going on what? 7 years?

I got thinking about this stuff because of another board talking about its past. Here were some of the questions asked:

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?

4. Who do you remember being incredibly active that is now gone?

Like I said, it is all a bit hazy for me...

1. I don't rightly remember what it was that brought me to the "unofficial boards". I originally posted as Dighn, and I know this board has been rebuilt 2 times or so. Probably more since then. I stay because of my interest in the game, and because of the very odd sense of community there is around here, even if I am not a big part of it.

2. Doesn't apply. Never was a mod, nowhere near being a founding member.

3. A lot of funny argument threads. That thread on meltowns has a few classics in it.

4. Harmnone. She has been gone a long time now. Klaive's crazy ass. Who knows where that lunatic ended up. Some others from the Stoner's Realms who were originally here I guess, but that was years ago.

Kranar's joindate is 1-19-2006, so this version of the boards can't be any older than that. As I said, I think we crashed 2? times before that. Beyond that, I honestly don't recall. I would try to piece together a timeline but I am horrible about these things.

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?

I really dunno, all my friends posted here so I figured I'd give it a shot.

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?

Not old enough. My only shaping has probably come in the form of being snarky and cruel at times to unsuspecting people. Ahhh.

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?
Probably too many to list. Melt-down, "Good bye cruel PC" type threads were always good. Even though it's recent, Ratolin threatening to kill all of us. Oh and I can't forget Draggonns and The Society Of The Dragons.

4. Who do you remember being incredibly active that is now gone?

HarmNone and Ilvane. Ilvane is still around but never posts. Not that I'm complaining.

Caels was here before Kranar. It was also a different board, with possibly a different URL(?). I came here at the behest of Vic/Chica to laugh at the awesome Gracy thread that had appeared.

I remember three popular (or infamous) unofficial boards, but I am blanking on the third. There was Stoner's Realm, *insert old and defunct message board here*, and Player's corner. Either the PC stemmed from that old board I am thinking of, or it was formed incidentally.

Edited to add: Is this it? http://www.tamcon.com/GS3/ I did a search for Unofficial Gemstone Forums and that is what popped up. I remember all those web rings from back in the day too. I can't poke around too much as I am at work.

The GemStone III Web BBS Page

At long last I have decided to discontinue this BBS system. With the opening of GemStone III on the World Wide Web, the primary reason for this BBS's existance, to consolidate discussion on GSIII-related topics, is no more. If there is continues great interest, I will consider re-opening something similar in the future, but for now it shall be gone. Thank you for your support.

I remember that link too. Commandant's guide was my bible. Loved that website. Gray and Atheana had their own board briefly after they were run off here, and there was an Unofficial Board too, IIRC. Klaive's came about after the various lambasting and hilarity which stemmed from his lies and retardation got him universally kicked from here too.

I'm thinking that is it. I added a bit more to the post. Looks like it shut down with GS3's move to the web. I played GS before it was on the web, but my time spent consisted of ATT RAT LOLOLOLOL

Hopefully some of the older folk will pop their heads in and say what's what.

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?

I was directed here by Miss X in like summer 03. I read through some character complaints threads and was addicted straight away.
I stay because of the friendships and familiarity I've come to know. Not to mention the occasional disparaging goodness, the awesome stuff sent from across the pond to me I wouldn't have a chance of getting myself (thanks Mistomeer and Czeska!), the joy Stanley brings to my otherwise fairly dull life and the boobs thread.. my love goes out to you especially :)

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?

It changed from blue to white. The moderators left ( :) ) and the old thing where you can see whose looking at the page with you went.

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?

I have fond memories of people who don't post anymore and it kind of does make me miss them and those times, say 03 - 06.
My favourite thread would usually be anything by someone coming to post for the first time and trying to defend themselves..

4. Who do you remember being incredibly active that is now gone?

The people who I want to name, I won't because they are now GMs. Some of them were complete cunts and still are to this day but Simu just loves that shit (see Andraste for one example).
Beth, who was actually pretty funny.
Caylainia who was also awesome and Emprss Btch who was really awesome.
I'm forgetting something really funny but can't quite remember it.
Something to do with Alfster and Sean and bra's?

Eh. Someone pointed me this way early 2004 to answer a few questions about warrior stuff. The boards were inadequate and I liked that I could search this one.

After that it becomes a purple haze of banana songs, helmut frogs, hairy men in rainbow speedo's...

My favorite thing is HANDS DOWN that website we used to go to and draw stuff in fine stick figure form to make fun of each other. I cant even remember enough about it to do a search. :-/

The switch to this forum was a sad day. I left a bunch of alters on my notepad from the other site.

I started coming to the PC back in 2001 when Buckwheet owned and ran it. I had heard about the PC and The Spot from other GS players and I preferred them over the official boards. The format has changed about three times since then.

When Buckwheet ran it, swearing was not allowed. Insulting people constantly could get you banned. Hell I got my hand slapped for mocking Urgoyle a lot. And look where we are now.

Any meltdown thread is fun. Some of them weren't as fun such as Atheana and her boy Grayson.

I miss Caels, Buckwheet, Weedmage Princess, and yes even Edgeleaf. We had some good times, and not so good times, but it has kept me devoted for a really long time.

Ah... Players' Corner "history". Let me sit back on my rocking chair, pull out my pipe...

The Players' Corner opened August 17, 2001. I was the first member, Buckwheet was the second, Kelood was the third, AnticorRifling the fourth, Edgeleaf, Zanagan, Weedmage Princess, Peam, Soulpieced, Bobmuhthol and just a handful more joined there after.

It started after Buckwheet and I were on one side of an argument against the people who ran The Unofficial Gemstone III Message Board, Saphnye and Webmistress. Of all things, we were arguing over Nazi moderators, over inflated egos, and basically similar things to what we have on these forums over in Forum Concerns. But Webmistress decided to shut down our argument and said if we don't like how things over there are run, we ought to just leave and start our own forum.

So that's what we did. Buckwheet was the PC's version of Webmistress, he owned the website, provided the servers, the technical setup, the software, and I was the PC's version of Saphnye, I setup the website, wrote the rules/guidelines and tried to get people to switch over to our forum.

Back then there was no swearing, no insulting of any kind, and yet we were still considered the lenient forum.

So that was that for a year. I joined the Army in late 2002, so I left the forums to go for basic training. My position went to Kelood... that lasted a little over half a year before all hell broke loose because of infighting between admins and mods and overall drama. Running this place is kind of a headache so Buckwheet decided it was fun while it lasted but he didn't feel like running it anymore.

So I came back as an admin to help transition the forums over to the next owner, Caels. Caels, a friend of his by the handle Comicraft, and I worked hard to get the place running again on a new server, and switching from the old UBB forum software, to the XMB forum software. Finally on June 3rd, 2003, the new version of the PC re-opened.

By this time we decided we'd let people swear and heck, you could even insult one another.

We both ran the place for about another 4 months, Caels was pretty well respected and got the hang of things, the forums were running smoothly so I took off.

Once again, about a year goes by, and all hell breaks loose. Caels had Gemstone101 as a co-admin, there was massive infighting between them and the mods, and Caels decided it just wasn't worth the headache to continue paying and running the place anymore.

Rinse and repeat... I come back, I cause a huge ruckuss over what should happen to the site, does it go to Gemstone101 the co-admin, does it go to me? Blah blah blah... bitter feelings, but I then become the admin and owner.

The PC goes through it's bureaucratic period, we establish a long list of rules/policies on how we're going to moderate the place to try to prevent infighting in the future, and the PC becomes kind of boring.

This is where CrystalTears comes in. She helps me out by becoming an admin and makes the place fun again. Implementing features people want, adding icons and other neat add-ons and overall spicing the place up so it's not so dull despite my overly bureaucratic rules and guidelines.

But of course, I presume running this place becomes a chore, the fun/excitement runs out, and I'm a dick to co-admin with, so she decides she'd have more fun as a member. She is the only previous admin who still posts here.

Finally, the forums as you see them now opened on January 19th 2006. At this point we had some 3000 members, 481 of whom are active. HarmNone and I were the admins with the help of 11 moderators.

HarmNone's mother dies, so she leaves the forum for an extended period of time to be with her family and unfortunately I never heard back from her again.

From this point on the number of mods slowly drops... from a peak of 20 moderators, we now have four guys left :( But we're still kicking... 5500 members, 600 of whom are active.

The rules went from no insults allowed, to insults allowed, to insults only allowed up to 50 "demerit points", to whatever it is now, I don't particularly know. I figure I still got a good year or two left before things change up again, new software maybe, new admin, new theme... we'll see.

Heck... we may just outlive Gemstone, now wouldn't that be a feat?

1. I thought the PC was dead... I stumbled over the new (2003) incarnation slightly late. Like how I go to most unofficial game boards... I came looking for scripts.

2. The site shifted from the original Buckwheet through Caels/Kranar and with the rise/vanishment of Harmnone. Myself, some other non rightwing posters ;), and Gan/PB/so on helped build the horrifying wreck that is the politics folder into what it is today. Everybody had to do something once we quit GS and WoW got boring.

3. Fond memories? I miss some of the RL trainwrecks. They tend to bring us together.

4. I already mentioned Harmnone. I'm not sure there's many others who I'd cast as 'incredily active.' Wezas. Peam.

...and I'm rooting for you to outlast GS, Kranar. You've done an excellent job.

What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?I can't remember the specifics now; I know at one point I came looking for scripts and another time because someone was bashing a friend and I wanted to see what it was about. I lurked for quite a while before I actually made an account. I was very active on the official forums but there were things (like scripting) that were annoying to deal with on the officials so the PC came in handy.

I've stayed because a) I have ADD and need distractions at work; b) I was used to active guild forums and my current one is lame; and c) I really enjoy the personalities and discussions here.

Any fond memories? Favored threads?Well I have to say the exhibitionism phase was great. :)

I was a moderator over at the The-Spot and had been since near the beginning when we came over there from some other forum (which I've forgotten). Kelood and I were real tight, our characters ran around in RR all the time and we were both The-Spot mods. The-Spot had degenerated to the point where it was pretty oppressive and I'd mostly stopped reading the main off-topic board months before and only read the moderator's private forum (which really was the only interesting board on the-spot because it was unmoderated). At some point Kelood got into it with Saphyne because she was a really heavy handed moderator and ran the place like her little kingdom. Her friends and buddies she let run wild and insult anyone they wanted (there was even a flame folder) but if other people came back at her pals she would bring down the ban-hammer quick like (this is what led to the PC originally being so tight-assed I think). Kelood complained about her capricious behavior and she banned him, I resigned in support of him.

As a funny aside, Kelood realized that although we were banned the forum software from the-spot couldn't stop us from visiting and reading the moderator forum until our cookies expired so we both tried to keep our computers running as long as possible without our browser crashing (this was a challenge as I was running IE and Windows 98 then). My access lasted for about a week but Kelood somehow kept his running for 28 days.

Shortly after that Kelood's friend Buckwheet started up the PC (I didn't really know Kranar back then), IIRC on whee.org. Kelood and I became moderators on the new boards (I posted under the handle AlphaTactic back then) and we actively recruited a lot of people from the-spot to come over and join the new boards. Buckwheet quickly stopped posting almost at all (if I remember correctly he had less than 30 posts before he quit), and Kranar took over things.

Some of the early posters that I remember are Deprav, Dantrotic, Weedmage Princess, Taernath, Nindy, Gnomad, and Fralcon. Kranar I think was originally Lord Kranar, Human Archwizard :)

I had pretty much already quit Gemstone when I came over to the PC so I slowly drifted away; I only had a couple hundred posts on the old boards. I talked to Kelood for a while afterwards, he would keep me up to date. He eventually left to and last I heard from him he was living in Myrtle Beach. I would drop by every once and again but wouldn't really say I was lurking. I came back to the PC around my join date for this handle.

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?

I don't remember when or how I first came across the boards. I stay for the entertainment. As previously mentioned, I used to be much more active on the forum. Now, I mainly lurk waiting to snark.

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?

Activity has it's ups and downs. Being able to put a giant god damned picture or four in your signature is one change I can't stand. Thinking on it, I'm not sure that's a change, it may have been been laying in wait undiscovered.

I'm not sure about any role I played here. Jackass, for sure. I was a moderator for a while, then a super-moderator. Then I went inactive for a few long stretches and came back to discover I was no longer on staff. (Thanks for the message, assholes.)

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?

Putting on my moderator mantle to battle the drug-crazed Stanley, when he started spamming pictures of rancid shit. I'm pretty sure he won most of the time.

The feeding frenzy of threads about the previously mentioned posters who were chased out of town, Klaive, Atheana/Greywhater, Xcalibur, etc., were pretty epic.

4. Who do you remember being incredibly active that is now gone?

Wezas, that tool.

A lot of changes, Kranar touched on most of them.

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?

The Spot ownership basically told people if you don't like it make your own. So I did. I have previously talked about this on many occasions, but the fact was that I knew it could be done with minimal investment, but that I needed to draw some of the more productive posters to the new forum. So I tried to get Porcell and Edgeleaf on board with moving as those were the posts I enjoyed the most. Kranar liked the idea, and we got in touch and got things going.

I have never truly left, I stop by from time to time when I feel like checking in on the first web community I ever made. Its funny, because I have moved on to doing so many other things that started with this, and many of those ancillary things have lead to job promotion or new jobs.

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?

The site in the archive I posted is the last copy of the backup I had. The site was around for a year or so before I passed it off to Kranar to continue to run. I still visited quite a bit during those times but I had moved on to Dark Age of Camelot full time. Then the site was changed to a forum that Caels liked after Kranar left him at the helm. Then the site was transitioned to this.

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?

Pretty much starting it and seeing what happens with it. I like the idea of you all still carrying it on as a community, regardless if you play or not. I never leveled any of my own characters above 50, which was pre-growing pains. Sort of hit "legend" and moved on. But at any rate I like to think I had a positive impact on the game and many of its members.

4. Who do you remember being incredibly active that is now gone?

So many people, but the few I really miss are Doomkilla, David, Kelood, Kranar, and Edgeleaf.

Not that I don't miss many of you or miss working with any of you. Its just those folks I had a great on board, in game, and out of game interactions with. Doomkilla and David especially with teaching me how to code scripts and write my own front end for the game. Really sent me down a path that I enjoy.

While I can't say there wasn't some unpleasant times, and while due to some of those not so fun times my reputation probably suffered in some people's eyes, overall it has been a blast watching the place grow. The nice thing was that after a bit of a spat between Kranar and myself I realized a few things and have been able to now develop several web ideas or companies and make a profit, then sell them to someone else for more profit and be able to watch them from afar and not get involved.

That is probably one of the things I miss the most about Kranar. We seemed to get along quite well, and I liked the logic of his thoughts when working with him.

1. What brought you to the PC, and why do you stay?
Like others, I came for the Gracy thread. I think I got referred by someone during an event chatroom. Or maybe that other chatroom. I don't know. I was amazed at the brutality of the pack mind of the PC and came to love it, so I stayed. A lot of my friends in real life are considered assholes too.

2. For the old timers, the same questions but further. How has the site changed since you first came here? What role have you played in making the site what it is?
I haven't played any roles in making the PC what it is. The thread I posted most often in was What Are You Wearing? and that was it. But I've been here for a while, in and out, off and on.

3. Any fond memories? Favored threads?
I love the Complaints folder and practically everything in it. Ah, nostalgia. Also, I'm tickled pink, purple, and green at the fact that we've watched Alex grow up, so to speak. Someone on the official boards mentioned it, and then here I was. Guess I stay because most of the people on here are into similar things as me. Probably one of the few who's had the same handle since the boards opened (my join date shows as August 2003).

One is a safe space where people who hate each other pretend to like each other that will likely moderate itself into oblivion eventually.

The other is a bunch of people being open about how they hate each other with some of them pretending to be scared over everything that happens in the world and blaming it on the posters they don't like.
