Anyone going to see it?

Personally, I am never excited to see any of the new horror movies since they've all sucked majorly. But, I am excited to see Raimi's latest flick since Army of Darkness. And being a fan of the Evil Dead series, I assume it's only right I go check it out.

Heard a lot of great reviews for the movie itself. So hopefully it is as good as they claim. Plus, Jhonen V. said it was rocking, now I really have to see it.

Horror movies that aren't rated R are a waste of time.

iJin

Ughh. You so did not say that.

Just because a horror movie doesn't have a pair of nude boobs, or a lame teenage couple having sex in the back of an old abandoned truck before they get their spleens and intestines ripped the fuck out, doesn't mean it sucks.

Also. Check what other people have to say: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/drag_me_to_hell/

did you just look at the score, or did you actually read the reviews? I'll see it too, I'm sure, but I'll wait for the DVD.

a select few:

Don't think of Drag Me to Hell as a grisly horror flick. Instead, realize that it is the most hilarious movie of 2009.

If The Exorcist were re-imagined by Bugs Bunny, this is what you'd get.

Bad taste? Undoubtedly. And the slim storyline only just sustains itself to feature length. But if you're in the mood for this kind of impishness, it's extremely jolly entertainment

A diabolically funny, creepy and thrilling crowd-pleaser, as long as you're willing to check your brain at the door and suspend your disbelief.

Really enjoyable. Sam Raimi still has it. Not on the level of Evil Dead, of course, and inexplicably there is no Bruce Campbell (wtf), but otherwise solid. View it as a rollercoaster ride and you'll like it; lots of cheap gags, gross out moments, insanely loud scares with little to no subtexts.

Was a blast.

PS, I think it will suck on DVD. It needs the size of the screen and the intense volume of the theatre to really get you jumping in your seat. Otherwise it has nothing.

I wouldn't call it horror, really. Sam Raimi is a gross-out, gore/effects guy. You want horror, go watch Silence of the Lambs.

I mean, to be fair, I rarely watch movies like that. I guess I understand the allure, but it's just not really my thing.

And I don't really define Silence of the Lambs as a horror movie. Maybe a thriller?

StrayRogue

Well it's all in the definition isn't it. Both films will be in the horror section of a video store, but both are totally different movies.

I'd consider Evil Dead to be horror even if it is hilariously childish.

good point. haha...and I always thought of Evil Dead as comedy. because if you can't laugh at that movie, then you have no soul.

And lets face it--there hasn't been a OMGFUCKINGAWESOME horror movie since the motherfucking 80's. Atleast, IMO.

Instead of trying to compare the new horror movies to classics, just try to enjoy it for what it is worth. Otherwise, your close minded-ness is going to fuck up every movie you intend to watch.

Also another thing, don't base the appeal of a movie solely on what one movie critic says. They're critics, it's their job to nit pick shit and add in a few witty descriptive phrases to intrigue readers. I have a hate-love relationship with critics.

And, Evil Dead.

Free Bird ending makes up for the shortcomings. It's the entire song, nothing else on the audio track. WTF? I never thought that would happen in an actual go-to-the-megaplex movie.

Not a gorno fan myself either. Saw/Hostel et al, are just not my cup of tea. There's been a few decent horrors, IMO, mainly international affairs. Western-wise I think the Ring remake was just a fantastically subtle and disturbing movie. I prefer it even to Ringu. 28 Days Later was good. Sixth Sense (if you'd call it a horror), Scream, Let the Right One In (more recent).

But yeah, I'd agree the best horror movies were made long ago.

Didn't like the Saws too much...they're not terrible though.
Although the first one, the ending..."MY FAMILY!!!" still makes me cringe.

Ring, 28 days good.

Scream. Greasy Skeet Ulrich for the win.

uhh something else...how about 30 Days of Night? I liked it but casting could have been a lot better.

Haha, no, I think the cheasy sex scene degrades a movie. But PG-13 just doesn't have the raw factor that makes a horror movie worth it. I think the majority of "horror" movies that have come out over the years are utter shit. Horror needs to scare the living piss out of me.

I really enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake and I'm not much of a Zombie fan. Except for, of course, Shaun of the Dead which I know is a parody on the whole genre and totally awesome.

Scary? I haven't seen a scary movie since The Descent. Before that? I can't honestly recall. I've seen entertaining movies, like 28 Days Later, but not scary. I still enjoyed The Grudge. The Ring was ok. The Hills Have Eyes was Meh. Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake was decent. Heck, I even enjoyed Darkness Falls. But scary? Modern horror isn't scary. Or at least, modern audiences aren't really scared outside of teenage girls. I don't go to horror movies to be scared. I go to be entertained. Scared is just an afterthought. "Creeped out" is about the best I can hope for. Definitely got that from The Descent. I'm sure others will say it was rubbish.

See, I didn't think 28 Days Later was a horror movie. Sci fi/Suspense, sure. But not horror/scary. Same with 1408. I haven't seen a horror movie since Hostel that made me cringe.

Most movies are just mainstream thrillers.

Hostel wasn't really scary, but I also cringed when the Asian chick had to have her dangling eyeball cut off, ugh.

1408 was good but not at all scary to me.

I really loved House of 1000 Corpses, and The Devil's Rejects was also good (just not as good). I like all sorts of gore and horror (and Silence of the Lambs, while thrilling, was definitely a horror - I mean wtf, Bill killed women to make a skin suit out of them. If that isn't horror, what is?), but I haven't seen a really good (newer) slasher movie in a long time. Not like the classics anyway.

I think the only shit in horror movies that I can't handle is when victims are made to eat things that no person should ever have to eat. I saw this movie, I think it was called Captive, with the hot chick from The Girl Next Door and the psycho put a bunch of flesh and an ear and shit in a blender and made her drink it. I gagged so badly I had to turn away.

I was scared of Jaws when I was younger (~10). I didn't even want to swim in a pool like all summer, hehe. I'm still scared shitless of the idea of sharks - i'm pretty sure i've mentioned before that being eaten by sharks would be my scariest death - and you won't ever find me going too deep in the ocean.

There is one other thing in one other horror movie that scared the crap out of me, but i'm so not posting about it here. :D

Most horror movies rely on cheap scares to get people "scared". This is typically scary/weird looking things appearing suddenly with a lot of noise. Subtle horror is much more effective. 28 Days Later, I thought was very effective because 1) London is never that quiet 2) the zombies were fast 3) when they get to the mansion there was a very real moment where I thought "fuck, these guys are going to rape those women" - which I also thought was the most disturbing part of the film.

Alien is a masterclass in pacing and atmosphere, but features very few "shock" moments.

Aliens scared the living shit out of me when I first saw it.
Was my first horror and that feeling of dread has stayed with me my life since.
I have a huge amount of love for the Alien TRILOGY. Definitely my favourite of all time.
Stray is right. The pacing in Alien and the intense suspense is indeed a master class.

The way they filmed the movie was pretty brilliant too, IMO. Instead of giving you any lead up or whatever, you start the movie as confused and disoriented as the main character, trying to figure out wtf is going on. You start to understand stuff at around the same time as the main character, but you get surprised at the same time.

On top of that, they did a good job at portraying that in crisis, humanity goes out the window (infected or not). When the girl hacks up the guy who gets cut before he has a chance to turn, without any hesitation or remorse, it's pretty sobering. Same thing with the mansion scenes.
