okay, so this law firm I'm going to work for has this irrational (IMO) love of Macs and so to blend in and be fully functional on their network (etc.), I'm going to hurry up and purchase a mac before I lose my education discount.
Should I buy one of the new 24 inch i-macs for like 1399, or should I spend out the ass for a decent macbook pro?
Even a 24 inch i-mac seems so compact that if I felt like taking it home it really wouldn't be that big of a deal.
What does everyone think?
Go for the 13" white MacBook Pro. Only $999. Still one of their best deals.

Its on the right.
What sort of software are they using?

I had two G5 Macs when I was in the Air Force, loved them. If I were to get one now i'd probably go with either the 15 or 17" mac pro, those aluminum bodies are pretty sweet.

FWIW, Apple doesn't really check on that educational discount thing. I got a discount two years after graduating just by showing them my college ID which was still in my wallet.
But in any case... besides asking why you would need to purchase your own computer for your job, I'd suggest going for the Macbook. You probably don't even need a Pro. I have a vanilla Macbook that's still working just fine and can handle most everything I throw at it (except games, obviously).
And it's easy enough to install Windows on it and do a dual-boot, so I can switch back and forth as needed, or even run OSX and XP at the same time.

wow, three for the macbook. Wasn't expecting that. Awesome.
Its a great little workhorse. Good for travel, it runs photoshop well, wifi, bluetooth, DvD player/burner, big hard drive, intel duo processor... only $999!
The biggest drawback for me is the video out is a special mini dvr to dvr or vga. And bluetooth video to a projector is choppy.

Oh and as to why I'm buying my own computer...because I secretly want my own as well, and the law firm excuse works for my wife, haha.

I'm just saying. If I needed a laptop for work, I'd have work pay for it. I'd never use my personal laptop for work.

I'll use it personally all the time, hehe.
I'm also instantly sliding into partner in this firm...that might be why I'm not getting any special privileges.

Thanks guys.
I went halfway and ordered a 15 inch macbook pro with 4 gigs of ram and some other extra goodies. Still saved a ton of money from ordering a 17 inch, but I'll be able to live with myself (I can't handle 13 inch. My buddy has one and while I like it, its just too small).
Thanks again.
