It fucking sucks. I just wish they would tell me instead of making me continue to come into work everyday with the (inferred) knowledge that I'm going to be looking for another job soon.

I just needed to say it outloud (write it, I guess). Hopefully that'll make me feel somewhat better.

I went through the same thing and it did indeed fucking suck.

When it was inferred I really stopped giving a shit and pulled an Office Space. I showed up to work in flip flops and shorts with a fishing pole that I put in my office. But I knew it was coming so I didn't give a fuck.

Best of luck man.

Actually the VP told me ahead of time and told me to fuck off if I wanted just to fuck with the owner (who was selling the company so it didn't matter). It was entertaining.

The VP remains my contact on the resume and gives a favorable reference. The owner is long gone.

*I'll point out that when the owner sold out to a corporation they brought in their own IT director and operation manager.

What makes you think you're going to get axed? Are other people getting laid off too? Is it a recession thing?

Definitely start looking now. DC is the place to be in a recession. You just may have to take a less desirable job until things turn around. Check out some of the intellectual contractors like Deloitte, Grant Thornton, or maybe even Booz Allen Hamilton. You may even get a clearance out of it = $$

Work has finally slowed down. I'm the most junior person here. E.g. I can be easily replaced in 2 years when there is higher demand again.

I really identify, having been through quite a few downsizings. I'll share with you something that happened about 14 years ago. I was working as an intern at a pharmaceutical company and they were going through a big merger. There were horror stories everywhere. Everyone was afraid of losing their jobs to the guys "on the other side". I figured as an intern, with zilch seniority I was gonna be one of the first to go (the other company didnt have an intern program and didnt like them). I was lunch with my team at the time and of course the conversation was about what departments were screwed, what the politics were, who was gonna go. I remember saying "I dunno, I can't control any of that stuff, all I can control is how well I do my job, so Im gonna make damn sure it counts in my favor".

So what happened, well, another guy who thought his job was in jeopardy jumped to another company and I won his full time slot. I worked at that company for 12 years through at least another 3 ERP (employee reduction programs).

So as Kuyuk said, if its inevitable, at least leave with good references. As a wise co-worker once said to me "Folks will remember your first two weeks and your last two weeks."

Well the upside is that you're probably a lower labor rate than the more senior people so the others may get dropped first.

Best of luck. I'm sure there are specialized lawyer job sites like they have for IT and cleared people, so at least update your resume on it/them even if you keep it hidden for now.

This. When we went through layoffs after 9-11-01, we first went to the people who have a thick employee file who were simply not pulling their weight and eliminated their positions. Out of 12 people I had to lay off.. only one was based upon seniority... and that was because it was a relatively new position that we created the year prior.

We used the downturn in the economy to cull the herd of dead weight.

I hear that man. It's way less stressful once you're actually laid off. For some reason, I'm not worried in the slightest now. But when I was at work, I just couldn't stand the waiting.

Downsizing is often a excuse to lay off the older employees with the established benefits and big salaries. Not that you'd want to stay with such a company, but it might give you extra time to look for a better job.

Any reason you don't just talk to your boss? Like, no hard feelings or anything boss but I'd like to know so you can go ahead and crank out a letter for me and I can narrow the gap of unemployment?

I hear though, Obama is increasing the amount of time you can be on unemployment...that's always a good alternative right?

Unemployment don't pay shit for those of us that made/make halfway decent money.

Mine was capped at $275 a week here in Florida opposed to the $1200ish I was making before being laid off.

I know it's kinda hard to do so right now, but try your best to calm down until there's actually something definitely there to freak out about. Right now you're just making assumptions, no one has actually implied in any way that you might lose your job. You could just be working yourself up over nothing. And nothing will benefit from you not eating or sleeping, and only you/your work will suffer. Don't give them a reason to fire you (crappy work due to no sleep/food) - keep doing what you're doing and try to relax. If it happens, it happens and you can't do shit about it. There's really no reason to work yourself up until you know for sure.

Been there. My company laid off 70% of its workforce since October 2006. I had dodged countless mass layoffs, even had dreams and nightmares (in which I never took it very well, there was always a lot of breaking things). But when it finally happened it was almost a relief.

I know it's impossible, but just try to forget about it and do as good of a job as you can (treat the boss to a few lunches), and whatever will be will be.

That's a really terrible position to be in and it's very poor management to put employees in that position.

That being said, it will happen or it won't. Since you've gotten wind of it plan as if you were going to lose your job next week. Prepare your resume, begin collecting leads, plan your job search, prepare an emergency budget, gather application information for unemployment and other social service support etc. Redirect the anxiety and put its nervous energy into setting yourself up for the potential hard time ahead; that way if you do get laid off you'll have a head start on what you need to do and if you don't get laid off, no harm done.

As entertaining as "pulling an Office Space" is, truly the best thing you can do is behave professionally all the way to the end.

Maalox for the stomach. A two mile walk and a Benedryl before bed for sleep.*

*In D.C. the two mile walk before bed might get you mugged to death, but then hey, problem solved!

I voiced my concern to a friend of mine and her dad (who runs an 8 lawyer litigation shop) called and said I should talk to him. I think I might make about 1/3d of what I make now. But it would be a job, I guess.

I think I'd consider switching careers before I'd consider shitty litigation work.

I am really investigating working for the Office of Associate Chief Counsel in Washington. I intended to do that in about 4-5 years anyways.

Again, I'm not concerned about not having a job. I just don't like being helpless and not knowing what the fuck is going to happen. I like certainty.

similar happened to me, my old DM got kicked out the door with not so much as a "thank you" for twenty five years of service. And with in 3 sec of me meeting my new boss face to face I knew I was out of a job, but wasn't fired for another two months.

Figured the company would replace a hard working leader in a leadership position with some f'n chump pencil pushing accountant that couldn't lead a liming out of a wet paper bag or even had a clue what "Management" means & only seemed to care about bonuses and bragging rights and to top it off was fired from his prior place of employ as a GM under some seriously f'd up circumstances.

All depends on the kid. Sometimes you get lucky. My son for example has been sleeping through the nights ever since he was born.
