So its official. MRI results are back and I have a torn ACL on my left knee. "No residual trace of the ACL"... Is how the report describes it.

What are you supposed to do/not do with your new Dr.-approved handicap?

My mom tore her ACL skiiing but after getting it surgically repaired and going through rehab, she doesn't complain about it much. The worst I've done to a knee is a partial MCL tear (apparently your knee is not supposed to bend 90 degrees to the side) which required no surgery, but I didn't do everything I should have with my rehab and it still bothers me sometimes.

Quit your bitching, get it reconstructed, move on.

Went with an autograph for my reconstruction because I'm not really a fan of the whole cadaver-tissue thing. Part of my hamstring works quite well as my ACL now- absolutely no problems in the knee. Only problem is once and a while trying to cut on the leg- the hammy they harvested from will cramp a bit.

Got my results on my shoulder as well. No tear or breaks and no more free tests to figure out wtf is wrong with it.

Best of luck just get it fixed if you have the means or sleep in misery every night.

1st opinion says that I'm a candidate for a cadaver ACL replacement.

This is a re-injury to an almost catastrophic left knee injury back in high-school so I need to find the surgical records from the 1st surgery for the doc to get a complete picture of then and now. There is a possibility that I've not had a complete ACL since the 1st injury.

ZOMBIE KNEE FTMFW!!!!!

Working on getting a 2nd look at it next week. For now, pain is minimal and I have vicodin for the flareups.

You'll never be able to go from first to third on a single on one knee! Get it fixed, the softball gods command it!!

You're in my prayers. :D

I had mine done autograft with patellar tendon. In hindsight, I probably would have considered cadaver more seriously, as it took a long time to heal.

I had a shattered patella and thankfully no tendon or ligament damage along with it. The leg was in a cast for 8 months however and sucked ass.

Now it just hurts when it's damp out or extra cold.

What are the benefits/drawbacks of autograft vs. cadaver? I didn't know there was an option other than cadaver.

Completely different healing/rehab cycle (plus far less chance of disease/rejection/failure to integrate).

With the autograph I believe you start off much weaker, but I forget exactly why. However, since you start like this you recover faster than cadaver (at least according to my doctor).

With the cadaver, it has blood supply or something I wasn't real sure about to start with (I think because it was always an ACL and not a converted thing that has to "learn" to be an ACL). So you start off much stronger- but then the previous supply runs out and it has to integrate itself into your leg. So it's a much different cycle (Strong -> Weak -> Strong again) instead of straight weak to strong. Apparently a lot of people end their rehab early because they start off pretty well, and hurt themselves in the long run.

So autograph lets you use your own tissue and rehab a bit faster- but will make the harvest site a bit weaker in the long run. Cadaver bit higher chance of failure, bit longer rehab but lets you keep all your other parts intact.

Of course this was 3-4 years ago so tech/recommendations/rehab may have changed since then. Just what I happen to remember.

I'm fairly certain an ER wont repair someones ACL.

But it makes the world so unfair to pretend they would!

Softball, playing like I was 20. Slid into 3rd on a triple and my foot caught the base wrong (no breakaways) and it pushed my leg back into me at a really bad angle. Should have gone head first but I didnt feel like eating dirt, especially since I was wearing my new sliding shorts!

Med bills will be normal due to a good insurance plan and a reasonable deductable. Running is out, thinking about taking up biking. Its also put karate on hold. :(

LOL, the risks of getting worked on at Ben Taub as an indigent case are pretty scary - I'll pay thank you.

True, I bet it would be covered if I went to prison though. ;)
(not that I'm interested in paying for my knee with my freedom, career, family, etc.).

Damn you so should have Pete Rose'd it!

And I also seriously doubt any ER unless life threatening would repair shit like that.

Don't you pay for league insurance? I used to when I softballed it?

I played basketball and softball for 2 years with a non-intact ACL, though I wouldn't recommend it because it messes up a lot of other functions in your knee to overcompensate for not having an ACL. Get it fixed and enjoy rehab.

Nah, I dont do league insurance. My work insurance plan is sufficient to cover it, especially since I play on a company team. ;)
