Actually, that's a fair question looking back on the value vs. the number of gems. They're not all diamonds and emeralds.

yeah, the only reason i asked is because there are a lot of pearls in there. for that matter, what town were they appraised in, and what race was the character?

Yeah. In fact, i'm pulling my bid as of now until I hear back on the trading. I guess I shouldn't have assumed he would've mentioned having an asston of trading just because everyone else does.
