Yep, Pogy.

Long story: locksmith first, then hunter, plan was to get four spells total, one every 20 levels to maximize damage reduction. Been RPing fairly useless at magic all along. The new rogue GM mentioned his vision of spells mattering less for picking, it pushed me over the edge to just ditch 401.

I fixskilled yesterday, stayed up late, was tired and bought the raffle ticket. Planned on getting a spell prep along the lines of Pogy appears shocked as she waggles her fingers... and a light blue glow surrounds her.

Today, I recalled the fix skill and figured, "Hey, I'm not going to win anyway." I won, wasn't allowed to transfer to a friend. Didn't want to train 401 again just to RP my blundering magical ability. I released the claim on the prize in the hope that they'll give it to someone who can have fun with it.

I've spent way too much time begging for blessings to give up a chance at permabless. What the heck do I need millions of silver for anyway? Silvers are easy to get. Fun items, less easy.

My fallback is to go for VHDP on some 7x doubles if I 'm not lucky enough to get the CP. Serious question, what's so wrong with it?

What's wrong with it is that even though you might have taken 15 less damage or whatever, your guts are still spilled out all over the ground, and you're still dead.

If you're still gonna die from a crit, it doesn't matter if you have +924373289432809 points of damage padding. You're still dead.

This is why damage padding is useless for light armors and good for heavy armors.

If you're gonna put padding on leathers, put crit padding.

I would really appreciate some advice here guys before I either spend millions on the next run or waste PPs after the event.

Yea any padding is better than no padding at all, but if you want "any padding" get temporary damage padding from the adventurer's guild, OR get temporary crit padding from a merchant... You can likely get temporary VHCP for a ridiculous amount of uses that will likely take a year or two to wear off, depending on how many times you get nicked. (Usually those in leathers have a high enough DS that they really only get hit from maneuvers, or nicked to death when stunned/prone etc).

A tiny few people have tried to convince me that some nice damage padding can save me, but there's no way it'd save me as often as crit padding.

They just mean that as a pure you're probably dying from the crit more often that you're dying from getting bled to death.

My clerics have worn doubles and leather breastplate and I think about 99% of my deaths come from getting knocked down, put into offensive and then getting a death crit (or even getting knocked down because of a bad crit to the leg/back.)

The thing is that damage padding won't reduce the crit ever, the calculation for the crit will be taken from the raw damage before your padding reduces the actual damage. So you'll have no help for crits (your biggest threat as a pure).

Warriors/Rogues/Paladins in plate (and maybe bards/rangers in chain) get put into long RT while standing and then plinked to death and eventually die from blood going to zero. This is what they're referring to as a good use of damage padding--because the plinks will be reduced to the point where they can continue to take hits to their blood until the RT is gone.

But if you find yourself in the above situation then it will be useful for you as well. And yes of course damage padded leathers are better than non-damage padded leathers. Do what you will!

Yep that's me. Thanks guys, I've since chatted with someone else who's also pretty knowledgeable and he confirmed what you both said. I'll hang fire on going for the damage and hold out for the crit padding instead. Let's face it, I don't want to waste a raffle slot and get slated on here for it! :wink:

You need Crit padding to survive the initial blow as a pure. That is the most important aspect of getting hit. Surviving the first blow. It is true that Damage padding will help you ride out the stun/RT, but really, Crit padding for EVERYTHING short of plate...MAYBE chain, is most definitely the way to go.

This is coming from a fan of damage padding.

I don't have a log, but when Naigood showed up last night to do the armor enchant, there were like 60 people waiting in the southern part of the oculus for him (it's four rooms shaped like a diamond). He finally showed up, but then started moving around and you had 60 people frantically running around the oculus trying to find/follow him. That was pretty funny.
