View Full Version : Is getting a 4th dog crazy?

So, I been thinking about getting a 4th dog. I really like the guys I have, but I dunno, was thinking of adding a girl to the mix (all fixed) and a final friend for my guys. However, in the back of my head I think it is truly crazy to get a 4th dog. We have a big enough house/yard for them, so that's not a concern. What do you all think?
The next breed I want is either a french or english bulldog. They are kind of expensive, but we don't do puppy mills in this house. I'd most likely adopt.

You get to a point where you pay less attention to the ones you have. The ex's family was kind of afflicted by that.

Speaking from the experience of having four cats and three dogs already (all but 2 rescues), I say go for it. It's a madhouse, but they're sure a lot of love and amusement.
Note: My three dogs are miniature dachshunds, so I don't have, like, Great Danes tearing through the house...though I hear they're actually great companion animals.

There are people who can handle 4 dogs. There are people who can't handle one. You're the only one who can answer it.
Things to think about:
How much time do you spend with your current dogs? Is there one that isn't getting the attention it should because others are favorite?
Can you afford the food and vet bills (and have you figured out how much this will be)?
Who takes care of your dogs while you're away? If it's a boarder, can you afford it? If it's a friend, are they finally going to say NO because 4 is too many?
Does your house smell? (Sorry, that's a big one for me) An extra dog will not make it better.
And just how big is your yard and how much dog waste can it handle? I live in a 12-plex condo, and half of our grass is dead from the 6 or so dogs that live here.
ETA: Don't die in a fire. I just didn't want to make a choice.

Get a Harlequin Great Dane so it eats all the little dogs.
No more purse dogs though Ponzzzi. Get a dog dog. If you get a miniature Yorkie, I will kill myself.

Sorry, but I'm of the opinion that anything over two dogs is getting excessive. Does size matter? Sure, to a degree, but I've been to houses/apartments where people have multiple dogs and it can get, not only overwhelming, but annoying. I love dogs, truly...but I'm a believer that two dogs keep each other company without getting too underfoot, noisy and/or stinky.
I'm positive you believe you can give them enough attention. You probably even can. The question is, will anyone want to come visit your place (and does that even matter to you)? I think it's crucial to answer a previous question about willingness and ability to have your dogs babysat (for vacations or whatever the reason). Lastly, some might say (including myself) that once you get beyond a certain point with pets that they're being added out of boredom more than out of loving care/affection/companionship. While I know this is not true all the time, there are certainly instances of it.

I fully admit that anyone who enters the bathroom after my cat has used the litter box does so at their own risk.
And that they shouldn't wear black pants to my house ever.

I watched my friends' two dogs, cat and fish for a week, it was a nightmare, and there was tension when they came home and saw that I had bought some freshener spray for the sectional in the living room. I love dogs, but they happen to have the worst dog in the world.

Leather furniture + no carpet in main living areas + frequent cleaning = not much smell. But fur... oh my god the fur... especially this time of year. I've seriously thought of taking him in to be shaved.

Well, to answer some of the questions...
I spend about 3-4 hours with them a day. That's 2, 1 hour walks and I play with them all on the floor. That doesn't include when one hops on my lap and hangs out with me. Our youngest likes to be a nudge.
No, the house doesn't stink, none of them have accidents in the house and I'm a neat freak and rug wash about once a week (we do get a lot of traffic paw print stains where the rug is near the back door). None of them are shedding dogs either. We did have a flea crisis on '08 when we bought the house, but a couple 100 bucks and that was taken care of.
Food/vet bills aren't a big issue, they eat about $30 a month and vet bills will always piss me off (my girlfriend calls it the Jew in me). We do use boarders, but we can put two dogs per run usually (out friend who had a dog went with ours and we only had 2 total). We don't let them go to places with just cages, unless it is truly an emergency. We bring them to places they have an inside/outside run.
Grooming has already got expensive, but I try to clip their nails and trim their ears, so we don't bring them in all the time. If Dex lived close, I'd hire her. I tip really well!!
Uhhh... Size wise, I could mold all these dogs into just one 60lb dog. One of them is super lazy. The other two are pretty active and play with each other. I think that coves everything... I don't do puppy mills or dogs at the pet store, so you don't have to steal my balls, Paul.

I've been pretty impressed with the furminator the vet sold me. It was for my long haired cat but I tried it on my mastiff & the terrier mix because of the shedding fun.
I have to say it takes out undercoat faster & easier than any of the other hand held tools I used when I groomed. They really do mean it when they say don't keep brushing in one spot for too long. I kept on with my cat because she's such a furball & now she has a spot I can see skin on...I try & pretend it's not there.
Sorry for the threadjack Mario, idk I've had a lot of animals when I ran my rescue but 4 dogs seems excessive to me. Even little ones. :( Check your local laws too, in Michigan if you had more than 3 you had to have a kennel license.
Right now I have 2 & thinking ahead to vacation to California for a week & boarding expenses + the stress on them being at a kennel makes me cringe. Not to mention the exposure to other animals/fleas/bordatella all the fun shit.
Going on vacation and dealing with 1 dog is annoying enough since I don't want to crate him. I can't imagine 4.

Agreed with Sean. Too many pets become a problem but if you have the resources and own your home than /shrug.
Personally I don't want any more pets for a long time. They kept us from moving and even buying in certain areas. Restricted nights/weekends out. Expensive to repair. Emotionally draining when something really goes wrong and with kids it was compounded.
I dunno.

If you already have 3 dogs, how much of a difference will a 4th make? Might as well get it... I always want to get a 3rd dog, but then I think of how much of a pain it is to get my 2 current (pug and chihuahua) babysat when we want to go somewhere.

I want to know if the OP actually did get a fourth dog and how it turned out.
My girlfriend goes in phases of wanting to add a third dog, or a bird, or a guinea pig, or a cat, or a _____. My answer has always been a stern no. We have two dogs and a bearded dragon. It's a hassle enough to find someone to watch them if we want to go away. I also really think our place would start to reek if we allowed another animal into the mix. We do a good job of cleaning, but we already got a saint bernard and a 40 lb mutt. Pound for pound, there's a lot of dog in our house. Our two dogs are best friends and I fear throwing another animal in the mix might disrupt that.
Yeah I think having an odd number of dogs would probably lead to one getting picked on by the other two.

I had 4 until one went missing a month ago. At first it was chaos but with training she became one of the best dogs we have and now we miss her horribly.
We took her in when my ex went to Iraq. He got her for my daughter and was going to put her back in the pound. She was total batshit crazy when she joined our pack and now that we get her civilized, and awesome, someone takes her.
It kills me, she is awesome.
Anyway, if you went for it cool. If you don't have time to work with and train them it is a bad idea but if you do have the time they are amazing.

Shit I hit no but meant DIAF or Yes. Only because it's a bulldog. Jesus they are ugly dogs.
Bulldogs are awesome.
Bulldogs are not awesome, at all, in any way. When I checked into Correy Station in Pensacola, I was unfortunately subjected to one of the nastiest dogs in the world. He was the company mascot, and one ugly as hell smelly disgusting drooling bulldog. The first thing he did when I put my sea bag on the deck was hop up on it and start humping away. My first reaction was to rear back to give it a good swift kick. This led to some hollering, and in the end I was instructed to just let him finish. Every time I was stuck with duty overnight there that dog would spend the entire time humping things, blowing himself, or sleeping. That's all he did, eat, sleep, and hump shit. Fuck bulldogs. Fuck them right in the ear.

I know a guy in Las Vegas who owns 12 greyhounds. The racetrack throws the old dogs in the desert when they are done with them. Sometimes he is able to keep them alive and sometimes they die. They are all senior citizens ...really sweet old dogs and suprisingly lethargic for being one of the fastest animals. Anyways HE HAS A RANCH. So he can have a herd of dogs if he wants.

Sometimes I think I need to get another dog so Caolie will have a play-mate but then I think of how much more time another dog would require and change my mind. We're about to start doing agility and I know I wouldn't have the time to train two dogs for it and it wouldn't be fair to only take one.

Sounds like this is the fault of the company. Dogs don't instinctively know what they should do to fit into our ideas of what's acceptable. And besides, that's not a BULLDOG issue, that's something most male dogs, of any breed, would do. I work with beagles and they spend a good portion of their time humping each other. No one has tried to get them to stop, so why should they?
Shit, if I was born into the woods alone and had no one teaching me anything, I would likely spend a lot of my time eating, sleeping, and masturbating.

80# lab, 40# terrier, 12# terrier.
All get along nicely. I got over 1/2 an acre of fenced in backyard, so plenty of room to roam. The little guy is born to cuddle, the mid guy likes to bark a lot, and my old girl just loves to sleep.

From what I understand, it wasn't just her. There were a few other occasions where information that wasn't supposed to be public was given/hinted.
PROVIDENCE — Animal-control officers, called to a house on Phebe Street Wednesday afternoon for a report of pet hoarding, witnessed a waterfall of dachshunds and Chihuahuas come spilling down the stairs from the second floor.
About 50 dogs, all but 3 of them of small breeds, were living in the single-family house at 77 Phebe St., said Jennifer Siakotos, a veterinary technician with the Providence Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Siakotos said all the dogs seemed to be in good shape and the house was relatively clean. But an ordinance does limit to three the number of adult dogs someone can have in the city.
Animal control officials from Pawtucket, East Providence and Providence took temporary custody of the animals until their care was further investigated, said Joseph Warzychi, an investigator for the SPCA.
The dogs were being cared for by a woman in her 40s who was living in the house and who began crying when the animal control officers arrived, said Siakotos.
Siakotos said the animal-control officers were standing in the living room when one of them asked the woman of the house if she had other dogs in the house. The woman told the animal control officers to close the door leading outside and then went upstairs and opened a door, effectively releasing the flood gate. Siakotos said a flood of dogs came rushing down the stairs but none barked.

100 Animals Removed From South Philly Home
Approximately 100 animals were removed during a raid of a Philadelphia home Wednesday evening.
The raid happened at about 6 p.m. inside a home in the 700 block of Earp Street in South Philadelphia.
"We got three floors, they're in every floor, in every bedroom, every room in the property," George Bengal of the SPCA explained.
Bengal estimated approximately 100 animals, mostly Chihuahuas, were rescued from the home.
According to eyewitnesses, the floors of the home were covered in nearly two feet of animal feces.
Bengal described the woman who lived at the home as a hoarder who kept the animals inside the home.
The investigation into the home began a year ago when neighbors began complaining of an overwhelming stench coming from the house.
Sources told Eyewitness News that officials were trying for months to obtain a warrant to enter the home and were finally able to do on Wednesday after receiving a tip call.
The woman, who initially refused to leave the home, is being interviewed by authorities. Charges are expected to be filed.
The animals will remain in the care of the SPCA for evaluation.
The city's Department of Licenses and Inspections condemned the home and deemed the home uninhabitable.
The incident remains under investigation.
