What role does perception play in disarming/poping a box. (408 and 407 and DISARM verb) Is it just for seeing a trap? I do not train in disarm skill but I have 61 ranks of perception on my lvl 88 mage. Will the perception help me? I am hearing conflicting information. I'd like to be able to open my own boxes but I usually hunt around OTF and such..

I will fixskills if thats not possible.

:thanx:

Yes. Popping depends on spell ranks, I think. I've never really done it.

That thread's not that important, as it's talking about manual disarming, not 416+408+407.

Some useful info from a couple years ago on the officials:

I'd have to say yea to perception being a huge factor.

416 will show you the trap description, but if you're familiar with what a rogue sees at all, you won't get as much detail or difficulty levels. IE, a scales trap shows as "a cord stretched between the box and lid" or something like that. A rogue manually disarming will see a complete discription of the trap, and a rating, -365 for instance. And 416 is perception based, for sure, as well as ranks of MnE spells and .... something else. It will also set off an enruned or glyphed box, and won't work on mithril at all. But it will not set off other traps.

I'm not in the habit of using 402 with 416. 402 is only noted to help with DISARM per the spell description. If it helps 416, I don't know.

404 is noted to help 416.

At 100, I have 50 ranks perception and I miss a trap 1% or less of the time after 3 casts of 416.

As stated, 704 on a box will let you know if it has a glyph or not.

I try to disarm most everything including blue/green scarabs, fire goo, crystals, spheres, acid spores, gas clouds, and fusers. Take the acid spores, gas clouds, and spheres outside of town. Let people know if you're disarming a blue/green scarab should you need an undisease/unpoison and can't cast it yourself. Lay down before disarming fire goo so you can roll/be rolled.

Do not try to disarm boomers, bladders, other scarabs, and scales. I take them outside to 125.

I put up a couple casts of 402, a shot of 404, then cast 416 until I get 3 clean peeks (or two if I'm impatient). I'm singled in Perception but it sounds like .5x would work fine. Then 407. You'll have to decide your own tolerance for trap disarming. I think this is accurate on what can and cannot be disarmed magically: http://www.jerrec.com/traps.htm

Unless you have some phobia of glyph traps, there's no reason to use the DETECT/DISARM verb.
