So I vaguely remember being able to access the audio currently playing on a computer through something called "line in", and being able to record said audio with the proper applications. I wanted to use this to record audio from youtube videos with Audacity, but the dropdown box that should list the audio source is inexplicably grayed out and I don't know why. Audacity's help file is woefully inadequate, so I put this to the PC knowledge base with all due humility and reverence: how do I do this, fuckers?

Use the "stereo mix" option within audacity.
(I just DL'd audacity and tried it, it worked on this system)

Yeah, it turns out Audacity works fine on my other computer, so it's high fives all around!

I use soundforge, mostly. Been playing with surround mixes... so fun. You do your stereo mix and then start throwing everything around the room. Love it.
