So, I sing a few times and either a GM is watching or someone reported, cause I get this.

Now I know that the song is tasteless and risqué but really, there is nothing inherently OOC about it as we have everything mentioned in the song in GS, including women's clothing and high heels and bars. I didn't get to the part about suspenders and a bra, soooooo, but I think that those even exist in the game. So, anyway, me and the other person get a send and so on, so, I am done. Not chopping any more logs, will just sit around like a turnip and so on. I manage to have a little fun, get other people to participate and we stand around chopping logs, a mindless and repetitive task and actually RP and there you go, the end result.

Now I don’t know any GMs and haven’t had enough interaction with any to really dislike any of them, and I know that this is likely just some case of trying to enforce some dumbassed policy and not a personal attack. I just think that it is way past stupid and the policy sucks ass. Just like so many other things about GS policy, major PC suckage. And people wonder why RP is dead and so many just power level and keep to themselves. Ok, end of my venting rant.

And if you knew the character Rocktar, singing such a song would indeed be very very much IN character. By the standard you support here, singing things like "Greensleeves" and such would ALSO be OOC and not RP as it is a middle ages song that came from out of game.

The Gemstone universe has a Genre, and it has Characters. This Genre is roughly based on the medieval Europe of fantasy; hence things like claidhmores, broadswords, plate mail, and magic. This leads to the designation of concepts and objects as In-Genre (IG) or Out-of-Genre (OOG). A lumberjack is IG, a race car would be OOG.

The Characters of Gemstone are fictional entities that have specific limitations, including specific limitations on the knowledge they can have: a Character is not aware of our universe in any way. This leads to the designation of concepts and objects as In-Character (IC) or Out-of-Character (OOC). A theoretical lumberjack can be IC, a lumberjack named Paul Bunyan would be OOC [i]regardless of the fact that lumberjacks are well within the boundaries of the Genre, or put shortly are IG.

This is why a Monty Python song or any other song created in our universe is unacceptable if spoken of in the Gemstone universe: they are OOC regardless of their IG-ness.

I think GMs OUGHT to have the ability to tell people to step their game up. Me thinking that Monty Python is not bad should certainly not be construed as thinking is is GOOD, or that the staff shouldn't go farther. I think that new player or not, staff ought to offer up renames as well. So what if it assists character sales. Staff isn't doing jack about that anyways.

The song was OOG. Most likely, the people around you reported the song. I was going to use Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as my OOG example, but I suppose Womanizer would work just as well. It wasn't because the things in the song didn't 'fit' with the things in GS. It was because the song is a Monty Python song that lots of people recognize. Your roleplay wasn't stifled. I'm sorry you felt it was. They did suggest you make up your own song. The didn't say, "Stop singing at all!" or even warn you. You decided to stop trying to roleplay or take the GM's suggestion to make up a song yourself.

As for the terribly OOG names in the game (might as well stick it all in here), I cringe each time I see one. I hate that they don't do anything about most of them any longer. I applaud the fact that a GM made you stop singing an OOG song at least.

I think I'd consider re-activating for some of the summer if there was more RP enforcement. I'm just not sure I could trust the GM/GH staff to do it right. They're us, ultimately, and a lot of us have some huge screaming issues, RP wise.
