Okay, so he didn't die and therefore it's not a true Darwin award but still:

Man follows sat nav to cliff edge

A car was left teetering on a cliff edge after the driver followed sat nav directions down a Pennine footpath.

Robert Jones continued to follow the instructions when they told him the narrow, steep path he was driving on in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, was a road.

Mr Jones, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, only stopped when his BMW hit a fence above Gauxholme railway bridge on Sunday morning.

Police have charged Mr Jones with driving without due care and attention.

The 43-year-old, who works as a driver, said he relied on his sat nav for his job.

He described Sunday's incident, during a visit to friends in Todmorden, as "a nightmare".

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers received a call at 11.18am on Sunday March 22 reporting that a BMW was hanging off the edge of a cliff off Bacup Road.

"The driver was a 43-year-old man from Doncaster. He has been summonsed to court for driving without due care and attention."

I love my GPS but there is no way I'd go into a braindead AFK mode while using one. I've had one try to point me through the lobby of a building, told me I was driving over water, etc. The tech is good but there's still a number of failure points.

Haha, I saw one just last week sometime about a couple that followed their GPS device into a lake.

LoL. Maybe working as a driver isn't the best career choice for him.

There was a story like this on NPR a few months ago, about some German motorists... and since German's are so quick to follow instructions, they followed their GPS into a building or something.

Must've been a GPS made in another country, since we know the Germans make great stuff.

I don't think he can get a Darwin award. Aren't they only given out to people who remove themselves from the gene pool?

As stated in the first line in the first post. But a girl can dream.

You people don't seem to know what a Darwin award is, except for PB (Although she was a crackhead and possibly birthed tons of crack babies.) :(

1. Can not have had children.
2. Must either be dead or injured in a way is which he/she can not have children
3. The accident wipes out them and all their children

I'm aware how the awards work. Had modern science not intervened he would have been the proud recipient of one. Mostly I just thought the article was funny and had came across it right before visiting the PC with this resurrected thread.

Also, #1 and #3 are incorrect. They can have children. They just need to die or sterilize themselves.

3 covered their children, 2 covered sterilization, which extends to their children.

This is Charles Darwin's thread!

I remember reading a story about a woman who tried to sue google maps because she walked into a 2-lane road in the middle of traffic and was hit by a car. She said it should have told her to watch for traffic. I hate people.

If I were Google, I'd have sued her parents for creating such a dumbass.

My understanding is that a Darwin award is more along the lines that "Humanity benefits from the removal of this individual's genes from the pool"

That is exactly what those 3 rules spell out. 1 and 3 are an (or). 2 is a requirement.

In the spirit of Charles Darwin, the Darwin Awards commemorate individuals who protect our gene pool by making the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives. Darwin Award winners eliminate themselves in an extraordinarily idiotic manner, thereby improving our species' chances of long-term survival.

Reproduction
Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile.
Excellence
Astounding misapplication of judgment.
Self-Selection
Cause one's own demise.
Maturity
Capable of sound judgment.
Veracity
The event must be true.

You have to meet the above criteria in order to receive the award.

Florida Couple Spent Days In Unlocked Closet, Thought They Were Trapped: Cops

A pair of hapless accused trespassers spent two days in a closet, thinking they were trapped inside.

John Arwood and Amber Campbell told police that someone had chased them into the closet (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/breaking-news/os-couple-closet-daytona-state-college-20141231-story.html) at Daytona State College's Marine and Environmental Science Center on Sunday. Once they were inside the janitor's closet, they couldn't get out.

But it wasn't until Tuesday that Arwood decided to call 911. When Daytona Beach police arrived, they discovered that the door did not lock.

Cops found human feces and suspected drug paraphernalia in the closet (http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/couple-high-on-drugs-trapped-inside-unlocked-closet-for-days/story-fnixwvgh-1227172299579), but they didn't find any drugs.

Arwood and Campbell were both charged with trespassing. Campbell was also charged with violating her probation.

In 2013, she was arrested after escaping a mental health treatment facility (http://newsdaytonabeach.com/vcso-woman-tasered-after-attacking-deputy-investigating-port-orange-accident/), crashing a car and escaping from the back of a police cruiser.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Arwood's record includes five jail sentences in Florida since 2000, with offenses including armed burglary, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, and fleeing law enforcement.
