I'll agree that some of those have no business on the streets other than serious owners but holy shit that's just bullshit.

Awesome.
What proposed ban is this?
I'd love to add a HK or a Dragunov to my inventory. Looks like it will have to be under the table if this passes. :(

Proposed by whom? The first person who forwarded that email, who may or may not know anything about any proposed legislation, and may or may not have an agenda against the current administration? Or the person who forwarded it to you? Or the person you forwarded it to?

That's exactly what I saw when I looked.
And looking at legislative action this year, all I see is HR45, which is esentially the Brady Bill on steroids, in which I see no recommendations for banning any weapon.
But hey, people believe the crap, so it is working as intended.

Urban policy agenda of President Obama
Shortly after the November 4, 2008 election (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2008), Change.gov (http://www.change.gov/), the website of the office of President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) Barack Obama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama), listed a detailed agenda for the forthcoming administration. This includes "making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent."[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-13) This statement was originally published on Barack Obama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama)'s campaign website, BarackObama.com (http://www.barackobama.com/).[15] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-14) When President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) Barack Obama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama) took office on January 20, 2009, the agenda statement was moved to the administration's website, WhiteHouse.gov (http://www.whitehouse.gov/), with its verbiage intact.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-15)[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-16)
On February 25th, 2009, the newly sworn-in Attorney General, Eric Holder, repeated the Obama Administration's desire to reinstate the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-17) The mention came in response to a question, about 20 minutes into to a joint press conference with DEA Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, discussing efforts to crack down on Mexican drug cartels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Drug_War). Attorney General Holder said: "[...]there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons."[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Weapons_Ban#cite_note-18)

Let me get this straight . . .
Gore invented Global Warming as a get rich scheme, but the NRA has access to Obama's agenda and isn't just trying to promote their cause?
It's a pretty simple economic concept. Construct a potential limit on supply, increase demand.
To be clear, Obama is not gun-friendly. But I don't see how you go from (a) Obama is no gun-friendly, to (b) This list is accurate. Surely you can see the tremendous potential, not only to sell guns, but also to rally a base, in providing an unaccountable source for this list.

OP: OMG OBAMA BANNING GUNZ!!! Buy them now! Prices are only going up!
Jorddyn: I wonder if this is propoganda to raise the demand for guns?
PB: GOSH! Idiot. You would think it was the NRA. In fact, Obama is anti-gun.

Jorddyn was implying that it didn't have anything to do with Obama's political voting record on guns and it had everything to do with profits.
I simply offered another alternative.
Has nothing to do with the list.. really has nothing to do with the NRA, Walmart, Winchester or Billy's Gun and Tackle Shop. I offered that perhaps it's because of Obama's voting record that people are purchasing guns and ammunition. It was why I got my concealed weapons permit and it's why I purchased another gun and more ammunition. I'm thinking that I might just be the typical gun purchaser that simply wants to be prepared in the event that the laws suddenly change.

Real men hunt deer Rambo style.
One knife and a tree.

I like shooting high powered rifles for the coolness of a tight grouping at 100/300+ yds.

There shouldn't be gun bans.
A gun with the power to shoot one bullet, at deadly velocity, should be as equal as a gun given to military personnel.
You shouldn't own them. Not because you can't control them so much, because how many more are in circulation and how little gross demand would there be for them if it was illegal to legal?
and when it comes to the internet I'm serious

I have the lifetime goal, uh, as far as hunting goes, of sneaking up to a fish in a shallow and impaling it on my butterfly knife.
So far, I've noticed when I do this, people say weird things like, "Can you stop, please?" And "You're scaring me." And this is not made up, unfortunately.

There's a difference between a 30 ought and a Dragunov. You can do long range shooting just fine with the first.
I'm not in favor of this "ban" and I think that Obama's been talked out of it way back. It is, however, entertaining how some folks think that their more extreme brethren don't practice fearmongering (for profit or not) however.

I went to the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show over the weekend and I was cracking up at the conspiracy theories and "facts" that were tossed around by guys in sleeveless t-shirts and camo pants. I made several friends by commenting on the fact that we were inside, in a convention hall, and there was no woods or charlie around so camo was pretty gay. You can always tell the guys that never served in the military, they're the ones always wearing the military surplus gear in civilian settings.
That being said prices have gone up because of this fear mongering. I was talking to one dealer and he offered me some stupid money for my CZs.
Before you believe the hype sent from an NRA buddy, or a law enforcement buddy, wait until you see the list sent from your congressmen buddy.

I've had to fish once with a bamboo rod with a swiss army knife duct taped to it, but that was because my three-prong broke.
Didn't have much luck, but the set up worked pretty well later in the evening when I was prawning.

These two work nicely together. Which was my point. Obama has a history of voting for gun control. Someone puts out a list of "guns to be banned", even though it's speculation at best and a flat out lie at worst. Someone profits.

The girlfriend and I were visiting her family in North Florida last week and her dad was prepared to give me his gorgeous Sig Saur 9mm from a wide collection of firearms he has no use for. He'll trade one occasionally for golf clubs or other nifty gadgets, but he let me pick from 3 and I immediately fell in love. However, we've decided to wait to transfer registration due to the current ban in Chicago and the fact that if I register another gun in my name I want to be able to have it in my home in the city.
I'm seriouly beginning to hold the mindset that the gun debate is more political fodder than anything. Count yourself fortunate if you live in a state that allows you to legally register your gun as well as the ability to have it in your home. The states with conceal carry are even more fortunate.

Murder/manslaughter and property crime rates (reported by the Chicago police) are down substantially (about half and 80% since 1980). I don't currently take a position on whether gun bans work, but I thought the data might help the conversation. :)

He bought the gun specifically so he could have a model similar to my gf's sister who carries one as a federal park ranger. It was the most compat and lightweight of the 3 and is a near perfect fit for me.

I'm just utterly leveled by your wit there. Yeah.
Wasn't this thread about you trying to dodge the idea that 'Republican forces' could profit off of fear-mongering about a weapons ban that probably won't happen?
I'm not feeling too bad right about now. Not when we have pretty much impartial folks talking about how people are being whipped into a frenzy at gun shows.
It is totally about Obama's 'anti gun stance.' Really!

I've carried a p229 for years and it's actually not as compact as you may think and can the .357 p229 can swap barrels out to .40s&w if you prefer.
the p229 is by far my favorite pistol ever carried/owned.
I would suggest buying/installing some hogue rubber grips however. Huge difference. You can also upgrade the springs for better action and less recoil.
.357sig auto round is a mean mother fucker.
*I also owned one in 9mm but sold it. Higher capacity but it's just not a .357 :P

Eric Holder has mentioned that he wants to make the ban permanent.

Actually.. rofl.. I did some research on the ATF's website, pulled some info from Wikipedia.... so..
yeah, technically speaking, those are weapons that the Attorney General would like to permanently ban ownership of...
Truthfully, some of those weapons do not have any business in civilian hands, IMO..

I am not a fan of fully automatic pistols, like the tec-dc29, uzi, tec-22 scorpion.... clearly, they're almost skirting the machine gun ban..
umm.. the street-sweepers are semi-automatic shotguns which could easily be converted to fully automatic shotguns....
Streetsweepers, or more specifically, the striker-12 (And some other semi-auto shotgun) are already classified as "destructive devices" by the ATF..
actually, most of those guns could technically undergo modifications to make them fully automatic....
the Thompson guns as well.. unless it's for collectible purposes..
for the most part, from a cosmetic standpoint, these guns look dangerous... from a functional standpoint, they're not too different than certain legal semi-auto rifles.. so I think the list should be thrown out.. with a few exceptions.

For the uzi and tec pistols. They are semi-auto pistols at least all of them manufactured for civilian use since may 19 1986, since no full auto made after that date can be legally purchased or owned by a civilian. And the street sweeper/striker 12 can be easily converted to full auto? Those are 12 shot shotguns that function the same as a revolver. How do you convert a revolver to a full auto?
And from a functional standpoint they are the exact same as any other semi-auto rifle. You pull the trigger, one bullet fires.
What I find funny is that in 07 in the proposed ban they made sure to include hi-point carbines by name. The only thing on them that makes them a "assault weapon" is the pistol grip. They come in 9mm luger and .40 smith calibers. The magazines only hold 10 rds. (there is one company that makes a 15rd mag for them but from what I've heard they don't function worth a crap) But they only cost about $200 and they are pretty reliable. Why do you think they would get named specifically?
Apotheosis
03-26-2009, 09:12 PM
right.. no idea why i said that about the shotguns..
and I realize the uzi + tec's are semi-auto pistols, however, I'm pretty sure they could easily be converted to fully auto.. same with most of the rifles..
I have no idea why they would name these rifles specifically, except that the majority of them were originally developed for military purposes, and then adapted for civilian "hunting" & "personal defense" purposes...
i would pretty much assume that they don't want civvies having weapons comparable in power to military grade weaponry, hence the reason they targeted (no pun intended) these specific weapons.

Well I assume they want the hi-points banned specifically because they are very inexpensive. As for the rest because its easier to ban "assault weapons" than what most people consider sporting arms. And once they start they just slowly keep expanding the banned gun list. And as for having civvies having weapons comparable in power to the military, how many people do you know that have 40mm grenade launchers, shoulder fired rockets, grenades, etc. And except for the preban full auto. A civilian owned ar-15 is as 'powerful' as a m16 because for the most part they fire a .223 but which one is selective fire. And comparitively speaking a .223 isn't that powerful for a rifle cartridge. And as for being able to convert them to full auto. Well do a search on youtube for 'bumpfire' which can be done with virtually any semi auto.

I hope they require bee keepers, car owners, and people that don't salt their sidewalks to keep the same policy.
It would make more sense to penalize the people that misuse their shit instead of making all of us pay for the retards. Stiffen the penalties make it actually mean something to misuse or abuse your right as opposed to penalizing those of us that exercise our right.

Any semi auto rifle or pistol can be made full auto in about 5 seconds.
That being said shotguns? Seriously? .223 rounds are not a serious round either.
the AKM/s etc that fire the 7.62 x54 /39 etc do some serious damage but it's no worse than any standard .308 rifle or 30/30 off the shelf with the exception that the latter is most likely bolt action as opposed to semi auto.
Other than the power these ak's /sks etc kick out the automatic bullshit needs to die. I doubt 99.9% of the average citizen could handle 3 shot bursts let alone full auto... they would be shooting the moon and nothing else.
Lol that being said converting a ruger 10/22 with extended magazines makes for a fun full auto. Surprised that's not on the list considering it's a .22 round and can be fired full auto into a like a 5 inch grouping. That would fuck anybody up.
Why not add pellet rifles to the list? A pellet from a ben-sheridan at 100 yards can disable a jet ffs.
This is a very badly thought out plan.
