Anyone around still playing? Me and a friend re-activated to finally check out the level sync update, very much needed update if you ask me. Makes the game so much more enjoyable being able to level with friends no matter the gap between levels.
Anywho just thought I'd see if anyone here played.

I've been wanting to tplay this. It always seemed like a more mature MMO. I enjoy WoW because of the large population, how does FFXI compare?

FFXI has plenty of people on our server (Cerberus), some servers are so friggin packed its nuts. Big difference here is that the servers arent country specific so you can be playing with Japs and other such groups.
I think FF is definitely a more story driven MMO than others but what previously killed it for me was one of the features I liked the most and it was its dependence on groups for battle. There iss very limited solo gameplay involved which was great for the fact people had to join together etc but blew when you couldn't find groups for hours at a time. With their new level sync system you can always group up with friends and everyone synchronize levels and play away.

Interesting. I'll have to do some research on the game. I'm kinda deep into WoW at the moment.

I reactivated a few months ago. I was reminded of their grind and promptly cancelled my account.

Yeah. FFXI's graphics are very dated too. I love the world they have there, and I loved the idea of being a corsair. But starting a new guy and getting him to 20, I remembered how bad I hate grouping and waiting. I was going to play EQ2, but decided against it. The girlfriend plays it and she loves EQ2. I'm going to wait awhile till a better MMO comes out that looks like I can really enjoy it.

EQ2 has it's moments but it's starting to show it's age too unfortunately. I tried going back to it about two months ago but it just doesn't do anything for me anymore.

Graphics aren't horrible. I really liked FFXI, mainly for the social aspect of it.
The main reason I left was for frustration for not being able to find a party. Even my bard had issues when I left. I was actually thinking about going and getting the newest pack and re-activating my Tarus...

Really? most of the people in the parties I was in weren't zombies... They talked a lot. Maybe it's because I had a vent server going on most of the time.
And I bet with the levelsync there's a lot more linkshell parties around, which would facilitate communication even more.
fallenSaint
03-16-2009, 08:54 PM
See thats the main reason I hopped back was the more interaction here than the other games, groups on Vent constantly and we're always grouping up to do some shit or the other. Level sync just increased it ten fold.
The Ponzzz

I'll be honest, level sync is the main draw that pulled me back. The grind was just too much. I never was on a vent, so perhaps that's why I never saw a thing. No one EVER chatted in the /linkshell at all. Game felt like a ghost town. And the auto converter for languages still hurts my brain. I hope that SquareEnix puts out a FFXI² one of these days.

I heard they made FFXI more solo friendly over the past year or so. I think it mostly wasn't til at least the mid levels, but from what I heard most classes could solo pretty decently. 4238094270x better than the 10 xp "Very Easy" solos that would result in 10 minutes of downtime at least.
How does the level sync thing work though? I remember reading about it but didn't look much into it. I'm guessing it converts everyone in the group to the lowest level player's level? So does that mean you could theoretically level to 75 (or is 80 the cap now?) by just grinding it out with low level friends in Valkurm Dunes or something?
I played to 75 BLM and ran with a Sky/HNM farming group for a while. It was fun and nobody used Ventrilo or anything then (at least on my server, doing Sky, HNMs, Dynamis, etc.), AND THAT'S HOW WE LIKED IT!!!!!!1

I could go on for hours like that just standing in Jeuno, spamming /panic on my Taru.
I almost reactivated last year, but I couldn't find my info, and SE would only give it to me if i could provide the first and last 4 digits of the CC I used at the time, which was like 2 banks ago.

All they need now is the account name, password, and one of your registration numbers.

It's in the original packaging. It sorta looks like a windows registration number. One came with all the expansions too and you had to input them to use that expansion.

They erased both mine because my original was pre 2005. They supposidely save them longer now.
As for the solo friendly stuff, it is the exact same way you described it still Methais. It is just some of the new jobs can handle things better by themselves.
For the level sync, it is how you described, except it also caps off your skills to what you would be at that level too. So you could be a lvl 70 BLM and on the dunes at 13, but all your skills would also drop to the highest they could be at 13. You also lose your spells, which other games that offer the level sync shit allow you to keep those. What I saw more was the level 70 guy would just sit outside the group power leveling everyone by healing so 0 resting was needed.
But they truly did nothing about the grinding, and FFXI could possibly be the worst grind in all MMOs.
fallenSaint
03-17-2009, 08:37 AM
I wouldn't call it the worst grind, they've lowered some of the XP gaps between levels since start.
And yea you can level to 75 in the Dunes as long as you have someone to Level Sync with, no more fighting for XP / Merit parties end game. As far as the grind goes if you have a decent group you can burn through the XP pretty quickly I nailed 25 in the first night out, but yea that was with a PL.
They added some new features that give you bonus xp and items while on the field. Kill x number of whatever in the area and you get a bonus exp burst.
And they opened it up so you can transfer to almost any server given they arent way over populated so if your looking for a crew gimme a shout if your willing to pop over to Cerberus and I can get you in touch with the LS, they do regular end game runs such as dynamis, limbus, sky etc. Not to mention plenty of vent chat and exp grouping.

Considering you could cap in FFXI way faster than in GS, I think that means GS wins for worst grind.
As for endgame, you can't even argue it. Getting geared out in endgame FFXI vs. maxing all your skills in GS, which is about the only endgame available, since no "real" endgame exists.
There's probably some Korean MMO out there somewhere that has a grind worse than both of those combined though.

You could apply the same to GS then. Grinding every job to 75 in FFXI vs. leveling every profession in GS to 100.
GS is still the worst grind either way.

Yeah, but you have to create a new character in GS. In FFXI, you can do it FOR EACH CHARCTER.
But regardless, after my last time back to FFXI which was only a few months ago, I'll never go back to that game.

I dunno I think the fact you dont have to create a whole new character just to check out another job is a bonus myself. But you also have the Merits you can knock out kinda similar to GS post cap training. But yea with a solid group in FF you can knock out 75 in 3-4 weeks now faster if you have no life. The whole having to soak XP in gemmy makes that just impossible to grind anything out.

You could still probably grind every job to 75 faster than leveling 0-100 in GS
The only "advantage" GS has is that you can spend most of your "grinding" afk. Fry in a minute or two, spend 30 minutes absorbing/afk.
GS really needs to update their exp mechanics.

FFXI 1 to 75 xp: 968,350
FFXI XP/HR : 6000 (decent party I wouldn't throw out of bed)
Hrs from 1 to 75: 161.4 hrs
Jobs per character: 20
GS 1 to 100 xp: 7,572,500
GS XP/Pulse : 35? Not sure, adjust as you see fit.
Hrs from 1 to 100: 3606 hrs
(161.4 * 20) / 3606 = 90%
Yes, you could level all jobs from 1 to 75 in FFXI in the same time it would take to get from 1 to 100 in GS. It's close. But there's a lot of things you have to do in FFXI in the between time and it would take a LOT of gil.
According to ffxiah.com, there's only about 20 people that have all jobs to 75 out of the hundreds of thousands. But then again, it's been around a lot less time than GS has.

It would have been annoying to get all jobs to lvl 75 with the amount of room you have for items on one character, not sure how much room you have now though. I haven't played in a long time. Only got my warrior to 75 and some other jobs to 37-50~. Diabolos server.

I clearly played on bad servers with horrible LS. Usually it would take like an hour or 2 to just get everyone in one area. Once everyone was good to go, we'd be like to pull 1k-2k an hour. This is clearly why I assumed the grind in FFXI was billions of times worse than GS.

I used to run mana burn parties (4-5 BLMs and a red mage and/or bard) in King Ranperre's Tomb at 75 and could easily pull in 10k an hour. Ranger parties could do the same, sometimes hitting 15-20k an hour if they were geared enough.
I miss FFXI but I know I'll end up wanting to kill myself if I have to start over again.
