Five stars. Dead average for me. If I could have not gone and seen it and waited till it was on the 9.99 rack at Walmart for DvDs, I would have.
EDIT: I did not read the comic/graphic novel nor was a fan of any sort beforehand, if that should play a part in my rating.

I gave it a 6, Mostly due to I never read the graphic novel, I'm sure in that aspect it was perfect... It felt like the middle half of the movie was allright..but I just couldn't get sucked into it for the most part. I also wasn't aware it was a 3 hour movie prior to sitting down..I'm sure that had a lot to do with it..however rorshack was fucking hardcore

The majority of the people that didn't like it or hated it have never read the GN. Its a must to anyone reading this that hasn't seen the movie. You have to be aware of the story and the personalities of the characters to have any sense of appreciation for the movie.
I gave it an 8. I didn't like Ozy at times, but towards the end he gre on me. The changing of the ending didn't bother me at all either. I FUCKING LOVED Haley as Rorschach. What a performance by him, Morgan, Wilson, and Crudup.

I absolutely loved it.
It's difficult to enjoy this movie if you're not familiar with the novel simply because it's an anti-hero movie, a story designed to turn upside down the entire concept of what a super hero would be like if they existed.
When reading the novel you get time to actually recognize that this isn't going to be your typical good guy vs. bad guy, save the world comic book.
It's kind of hard to digest or appreciate that in 2 and a half hours, but if you know that going in, you can sit there and appreciate all the tiny details you remember from the novel put up on the big screen.

Agreed. Its not a story for everyone.
I think Dr. Manhattan's blue dong is bigger than my fleshy colored dong and that upsets me. I felt very insecure leaving the theater. If I had a cock bigger than God's I'd have felt a lot better.

Any time a movie is made that requires outside influence to better understand it is poorly made, in my opinion.

Not for people who are familiar with that influence. For those people, the fans... seeing a movie that doesn't compromise its content so that it can stay true to its roots is something worth celebrating.
I hate it when movies try to appeal to a wide audience so the story is dumbed down or things are changed to make it more marketable.

I read the comics years ago. I re-read them in preparation for the movie. I felt that the movie format required a lot of backstory within the movie, and that ate up quite a bit of the time. It was done very well, but it still left quite a few things unexplained.
Overall, I don't feel the ending detracted from the movie at all, if anything, I even prefer it over the comic ending. I feel it held more in the realm of believability than the comic ending.
I liked it. I doubt I'd see it again, 2:47 runtime is a bitch.

Amen. There were so many moments that gave me goosebumps. A lot of the casting was top notch too, as far as looks.
At first I hated Dr. Manhattan's voice but I started to like it after a while. Rorschach was perfect in every sense.
This movie is the best comic book movie in the sense it stayed sooooooo loyal to the original source. Its really a tribute to the original series and Alan Moore should be proud. He's probably hanging from a ceiling fan as we speak though.

Go to Fandango and read some of the reviews. These parents take their kids to see it because its a "comic-book movie" even though its rated R. Here's an example -
BE CAREFUL!!! by lovemy8kids lovemy8kids This is the most horrible movie I have seen in a very long time. Nothing like I thought it would be. NO ONE UNDER THE AGE OF 21 SHOULD ATTEMPT TO SEE THIS MOVIE. In all actuality there should be a rating worse than R that puts it closer to X. Shame on the writers and producers of this movie. Anyone with any morals at all should not see this. I started to watch this and had to leave. What a waste of money!

Perfect reason why parents should look into what they're taking their kids to see. God damned retards. Probably going to wait a week or two before I go see it myself, but damn am I excited to go see it.

I loved the movie although like I said I could have done with less Nixon scenes. I thought all the characters were very well done, though some were "more perfect" than others. John was exactly as I imagined him. Rorshack was too. Ozy really didn't get as much development as the others in the first half of the movie and I think that was where some of the disappointment many people had lay- I think he really shined at the end.
I think if you weren't already familiar with the story Ozy may have seemed a little two-dimensional (since they gave so much development to Rorshack, John, Silk Spectre and Nightowl) and that's part of why I gave it an 8.
I thought the different ending worked fine.
I saw it with a 30-40 crowd most of whom seemed like they were fans. It was almost dead silent during the drama scenes it was as if the entire theater was focused on the story. For a nearly 3 hour movie it wasn't slow- but it didn't move fast either; there was just too much story to tell. It moved quickly enough but that also figured into my 8 rating.
If I had the time I would totally see it again at the theater and I'm glad I went with four others. It was worth the price of admission IMO.

What, typically American audiences talk during the showings?
Fuck that. Nothing pisses me off quite as much as noisy dickheads at the cinema.

Americans are not any more or less rude than asshole Europeans. We know how to watch a movie.

I give Dr. Manhattan's big blue penis three and a half stars, plus another quarter star for being cut.
The movie in general was a big 'meh'. I'm afraid the general audience who would appreciate the gore, boobies, and actual soft core sex scenes will likely make this the most popular Director's Cut ever.

I liked it. A buddy gave me the book to read, but I didn't have a chance before going in. Half the theater was filled with 6 year old kids with their parents, which I thought was weird. Also, Rorschach is the fucking man.

Loved it! Ending change wasn't enough to really change the story and didn't detract from the movie.
I loved how much everybody looked like the people in the book. Even Nixon, in the book he had the too-big nose, too.
I'll totally buy the DVD.

If you've read the original and are a fan of the story I think its impossible to not like the movie. But I feel bad for all the people hung up the violence, or the supposed lack of story, or Dr. Manhattan's blue dong. I love reading the reviews of the parents who took their kids to see this thinking it'd be a X-Men type movie and ended up seeing Malin Ackerman get nailed by Nite Owl. Love it.

To get back on topic (sorta), the last movie I saw that lived up to how much I anticipated it was 2004 Dawn of the Dead. Man, I loved those fast and hungry zombies.

That's one of those things I've never understood. People are okay with seeing someone killed execution style but heaven forbid if they so much as see a tit.

They really did an awesome job on that remake. All the humor, gore and suspense as the first.
PS. Even though it did not have my two favorite quotes... “I see you... chocolate man!” and “Perfect, baby. Perfect.”

I thought it was pretty damn true to the graphic novel.. I read it last month and it blew me away. Like, if the comic was giving me a blow job, I'd be 20ft away and androgynous. TMI? Either way, I'd give it an 8.. not the best but definitely great considering what a challenge of a story it was to work with. Of course Rorschach was the best part.. I thought the opening credits were stellar as well.

the oddest part of all this is that I've been friends with Malin for years now. I used to promote her band and we used to get coffee and/or lunch together back in the day.. so seeing her in err... that position (no pun intended) was really awkward for me.

I liked the brutality. I hated the costumes.
I loved Rorschach. Night Owl came across as a total cheese wimp (except when fighting).
Loved the action, hated the drama and the ending was a pile of shit.

* "Watchmen" opens at No. 1 with $55.7 million
* Costly superhero saga falls short of expectations
* Earns a solid $27.5 million in 45 territories
LOS ANGELES, March 8 (Reuters) - "Watchmen," an unorthodox superhero movie that took two decades to reach the big screen, took the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, but fell a bit short of expectations.
The adaptation of a cult comic book series sold an estimated $55.7 million in tickets in its first three days, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said, becoming the biggest opening of the year.
But pundits had expected an opening in the $60 million-plus range, and the tally was considerably lower than the $71 million start two years ago for "300," the previous film from "Watchmen" director Zack Snyder. The ancient battle epic holds the record for a March opening. "Watchmen" ranks at No. 3.
"Our expectations were met," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic theatrical distribution at the Time Warner Inc (TWX.N)-owned studio.
He said the film's 161-minute running time inevitably affected business, restricting theaters to one main evening screening. Male moviegoers accounted for about two-thirds of the audience, with the "sweet spot" aged between 17 and 35, Fellman said.
...
"Watchmen," which cost about $120 million to make, revolves around a team of crime fighters targeted in a dastardly plot with dangerous implications for mankind.
...
Top critics were largely underwhelmed by "Watchmen," according to Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com), a web site that aggregates reviews.
