I know this is probably on here somewhere, but do you have to have exp. in your head to learn from your instrument?

Yeah, that's what I meant. I remember years ago Nofret telling me I had to have exp. to gain levels. Then I started playing a character with a new bard and he got levels without hunting. So, I was confused. Thanks.

Just for redundancy, no exp in the head is required. Further, my experience is more-or-less in line (time-wise) with this:
