So, early this morning, something woke up me up that was coming from outside. I get up and I see a black man running through my yard and a police officer down on my front porch. Seconds later, 5 police cars show up and park just outside my house. I see several other cop cars roaming the streets looking for this guy as well...
They are there for quite some time, and eventually they send the K9s looking around, which cause my dogs to go nuts. I see their flashlights in my backyard and on the side of my house, and don't think much of it. They never speak with me or ask permission to me in my yard, but really, I wasn't caring all too much. I went outside to try to talk to one of the officers, but they straight up ignore me. Once they leave, I went back to bed.
When I got up this morning to let the dogs out, I noticed my back fence is broken. Several of the wood boards are snapped in half and the lock on the gate has been broken off by what looks like someone kicking it in. The second car has a giant dent in the side of it and the garage door looks like someone struggled to open it and has been dented. I am positive the police officers did this, because the man ended up running east from my house and was later found miles away according to the news. He fled from his car which was my nextdoor neighbor and am sure he didn't cause the damage in the struggle as it all happened in the front yard.
So, what do I do? I would say there is about $1500-$2000 worth of damage over all on my property between the garage door, car and fence. And that's just what I can see right now. Might be more damage elsewhere.

As an ex cop i can say i have caused plenty of damage to other peoples property in an attempt to catch someone....But we also always followed up and filed a report so those people could get damages payed for by the city or the criminal if possible. I would definately call the police department and file a report and try and have the city pay for damages they caused durring the chase/struggle for that guy.

File a complaint at the police station, and then find a lawyer
record everything with a camcorder next time...
I don't care if it's cops, I always watch people if they are on my property.

I would start with calling the local police department, explain the situation and they might be able to point you to who you need to contact.

Go to the police station, if that doesn't work go to town hall, if that doesn't work try calling the selectman's office, if that doesn't work harass the hell out of all of them. They will eventually give in.

Definitely file a claim. When you call or go in to do so ask if they have an Office of Risk Management because I think they usually handle this kind of complaint. Also, take pictures of the damage.

No need to start out all pissed off at them before even finding out if they will just take care of it. No agency wants angry claimants filing lawsuits so there are definite ways to redress damage without too much hassle before it gets to that point.
File a police report, give report number to your insurance company and let them sort it out.
Fighting the city, while not impossible, is a huge time sink and can make your head hurt. Let your insurance company deal with it. Thats why you pay them.

Nah he said it was a black guy. Sean2's a lot of things, but he's definitely not black, hehe.

But seriously go as high up as you possibly can immediately. Call the chief of police or your mayor or even your congressman. If you want shit to get done talk to the highest person you can flag down. I 100% guarentee people will start hopping.

Yeah, talked with the supervisor at the station, I need to speak with the Sargeant that was on last night at 10pm tonight. I'm hoping this won't be too painful, really.
They told me it was involving grand theft auto, stolen plates and I guess assault on a police officer. Crazy shit. Thanks for the heads up here.
And if it was Sean2, that would have been pretty awesome. But this was a tall, skinny black dude.

Why'd he have to a black man and not just a man?

I was describing the perp. If he was white, I would have said that as well.

No, I think what Shaft was trying to say is that you didn't need to say black man, because perps are always black.
Shaft's a racist.
