Drew

I don't see myself as "full white (European)". My maternal line is 18th generation American and my paternal is at least 10th. Along the way I've had lots of Indian and some black mixed in, along with who knows what else. I don't feel that European describes me because genetically I'm much different from a non-mixed European.

Drew

The truth is anyone whose family has been in America for long enough almost certainly has mixed ancestory. If you're white you probably have some indian and some black blood. If you're black you probably have indian or white. If you're indian you're probably mostly white. If you're from India, this could be slightly confusing.

lolz@S.R.

Seriously though, Drew has a point. I mean, you look at me, you see white. But maternal side in America since Revolutionary War days, and claims British, Scot, Swedish, Chipewa Indian and black. Paternal side were immigrants, came here in 1914, and were German, but had Slavic, Greek, and some Arabic somewhere.

Why isn't there a selection for MUTT?

What's wrong with the half-white option?

What do you people put down on applications?

That to me usually means mulatto. I'm fine with selecting "white". But not "full white" or "European".

You forgot who the fuck knows. I put down white because that's what I look and to the best of my knowledge that's what I am but my dad was adopted so who the fuck knows. Well there are a couple people that know but their not talking, seriously. There is a friend of the family who knows/knew my paternal grandmother but she won't say a word. Rumor has it that she got married had a shitload of kids and neither her husband or kids know about my dad. And if she's still alive thats the way she wants it kept. Although my Dad did meet her at a funeral but never mentioned that he was her son and my Mom was pretty sure she meet her at a baby shower.

I put down white because that's what I look

:yeahthat:

I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't have some kind of mixture. My father was Canadian, my mother was born in Holland and it diversifies from there. Black, Canadian, European, American, North American Indian, their all in there somewhere.

Martaigne
02-27-2009, 11:14 AM
But seriously: German and Irish with ancestors that came over on the Mayflower and mingled with Cherokees.

So, white.

The last person in my family tree who cant directly link themselves to Ireland were vikings.

It's an intrinsic human need to categorize everything. Same, kind-of-same, kind-of-different, different, OMG WHAT IS THAT?

There was a whole show on National Geographic a few months ago about why/how we do this with everything we see. It was really fascinating. Of course, I don't remember any of the answers to "why", so this post is entirely useless. Feel free to disregard.

Pretty much a survival skill to expect similiar outcomes from similiar things. We would not have lasted very long if we sat around pondering if the next lion was going to try to kill us again or if that last lion was just a nasty lion. Same reason animals avoid red berries even though most of them are not poisonous and rats will stop eating cereal if you give them poisoned cheerios.

My family came over in the 1920's I know my grandfather's family did (polish). My grandmother's Irish family came over a little before that.

My mother's family came over in the forties and she was born in Ireland and adopted through the Church.

So, I'm pretty damn white. So, I put White (Non-Hispanic) at least that's what's on whatever application or whatever when I have to fill it out for race.

But I often have some Cherokee in me. :)

Eh. Let's see. My father's family came over on the Mayflower of Scots-Irish-English stock. My mother's family came to America through Cuba when Castro came into power, but before that they were from Spain. I've got a great-great-uncle from Greece but that's out of my direct line so... I'll have to go with mutt.

Honestly, though, I identify more with my mother's side culturally and physically (the hips..) so I put down Hispanic on official documents.

African-American.

I just like seeing people's reaction to my pasty white Irish face...

I'm white, and have dual citizenship with South Africa and USA. I was born in S.A. so technically I am African American...

But those applications aren't asking for ancestry, they're asking for color, hence the choices of -Caucasian(WHITE)- and -African-American(BLACK)-

So I put white, even though I've never even visited this 'Caucasia' place.

It's more of a shade of pink, very light brown, and white. I'll have to look up the RGB/CKMY values. But yes, I'm as "white" as they come.
