Based on the game Alone? Depends if your a big fan of the prior Star Ocean series.

But a 360 is worth getting in general so its an added bonus for sure. 360's are cheap, www.techbargains.com, you just missed Dell's most recent discount but you can nab them so cheap its hard to avoid.

Were any of the Star Oceans more than one player game? As in someone else can take control of the other characters in battle. It makes grinding a lot less boring if someone else can play one of the alts in your party.

So the new SO isn't terrible? To be honest, I really hated 3. I've heard that the gameplay in 4 is good, but the story once again sucks.

Pity, since SO2 is probably my favorite RPG of all time.

Story's not that bad, actually. I keep getting Star Trek vibes from it. You're like Kirk, but before the Prime Directive.

Makes for some interesting situations.

Huh. Wasn't this game released Tuesday? Kind of early for reviews. I picked it up for my lil bro since he was clamouring for it but I don't think he's been able to put in more than a couple hours because of class.

The real selling point for a 360 should be like Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead.

I have read that the voice acting is terrible in places.

It's kinda hit or miss with the VA it really hasn't bothered me at all but some people can't seem to stand it. Storywise it's pretty interesting so far but I'm only about 10 hours into the first disk so I'm hoping it doesn't crap out on me.

I can think of one thing more awesome than Star Ocean:

Tales of Vesperia was actually quite good. The dialog was sometimes bad, but the voice acting was awesome.

Star Ocean 3 sucked in story, combat, and item creation compared to the other games, most notably SO2. Does The Last Hope fix this shit?

I like games that give you the option of listening to Japanese voice acting with English sub-titles (granted, the only games I have that have this feature are Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3).

It sounds so much less forced / cheesy if it's in a language I don't understand.

Yeah. I consider dialog part of the voice acting when I was judging it. If one is bad, the other normally is by default.

I thought the Lunar series had wonderful voice acting. Working Designs put together a great crew of actors for that. RIP WD.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed the voice acting in a video game. Give me text that beeps as it appears in a window any day (what a horrible night to have a curse!).

I did however enjoy some of the horribly cheesy level-up dialog in Star Ocean 2.

"I'm delighted!"
"Looks like I'll be popular with the ladies again!"
"I'm quite embarrassed."
"Craude has advanced forward ... heh!"

American games often have good voice acting, but for foreign games they're almost always terrible. Some nice exceptions, though, are (as pointed out) Vesperia and the Metal Gear Solid series.

Star Ocean 4's, from what I've seen, is abysmal. The game's already on 3 DVDs, isn't it? Don't really see an excuse for not including it. I'm not buying it until they offer it on DLC or on a reprint, especially after how much I disliked 3.

I'd like to hear a handful of games that people consider decent voice acting outside the 2 or 3 mentioned in this thread.

Was Fallout mentioned? Good voice acting, even if they didn't get nearly enough actors.

Still a small figure. I see the word often and I think a large percentage. I didn't think .hack HU was good voice acting though. Fallout and Oblivion were both decent.

Bioshock had good voice acting. "I'm ZANDER FUCKING COEN". Dead Space had good voice acting. Anything EA put out had good voice acting. I remember Mass Effect being good as well for voice acting. The Naruto games had good voice acting by nature of what they are.

When I was a kid, I did voices for some DOS-based or early Windows game. No idea what the title was or whether it ever made it past the production stage, but my friend and I got a full plate of cookies for our efforts. It was awesome!

It had epic outtakes too.

Alex's VA: "Ugh...ahhh...Ok, no, I refuse to do this scene."
Producers: "Why not?"
Alex's VA: "I'm under 18."
Producers: "ROFL"

pisses me off that sony's losing such games. IF they don't port it to ps this year, I'll buy a damn 360. I don't want a damn 360:(

I for a time switched to PS3 because of the better graphics, but in truth I like achievement points. Trophies are poorly thought out. Increasing that score next to my name is better than trophies I will never look at. Stupid Sony. That and yeah, better exclusive titles.

There is also an issue with the PS3 connectivity between my TV and Audio Receiver. Because of HDMI handshake issues if I play ANY DVD or ANY game on 1080P I will get snow in the background. It isn't noticable until there are a lot of dark colors on the screen, but damn is it annoying. It doesn't happen with blue rays. Just seemingly games/movies which force the PS3 to upconvert.

Pretty much the nail in the coffin for me.

Just beat it. Final boss fight was intense... I can't imagine what it'll be like on the harder difficulty levels.

Of course, this could be due to the fact that I refuse to carry a symbologist in my main party of 4 for healing and buffing. Spellcasters are ghey.

Story ended up being pretty "meh"... and I don't like that Private Actions have less importance... and I only like two of the characters... but like any Star Ocean, it's all about the higher difficulty levels and the bonus dungeons. So we'll see how it goes. The battle system is really, really kickass though.

Did you guys have any issues with it starting to freeze on the second disc? We had no issues at all on the first one, and once we hit the desert area around the Purgatorium, it started freezing up. Happened like 3 times, and we had to reset the system and lose our progress. PITA, SIRS.

Maybe it's me... I brought the game to play on my brother's XBOX 360 ... but I can't seem to really get a handle for the battle scenes.

Is there a way to switch through targets? I seem to be stuck on the same one I'm currently targetting, and I can't cover Reimi who got killed a couple of times.

I guess a solution is to switch to her if she's in trouble.

.

Also, what's the best strategy as far as BEAT goes?

Read a lot about that on some message boards. Installing the disk onto your HD seems to help with the problem. I've been installing each disk as I go and there is a very slight FPS drop in some areas but I haven't had any freezes so far.

I've been putting whoever I'm controlling in strike and the rest of the part in burst until they hit the cap, then I just swap it over. For bosses I'd stick everyone but your leader in burst for the extra defense.

Yar, no freezing with an HD install so far for me.

As far as BEAT, you have to go with Burst, for most characters. The increase in Rush capabilities is just too awesome.

At rank 20, Strike is only +100 ATK, and endgame, that's not much at all. The no-guard while blindside charging is nice for characters that can't learn No Guard from a skill book--I'M LOOKING AT YOU, BACCHUS--but Burst just blows Strike out of the water.

I haven't been having trouble with Universe difficulty yet. Blindsiding is really, really effective. I also filled up my bonus board with 12 green gems and slummed around on Aeos for an hour... easy 3000 skill points. Word.
