I bet you had a spell prepped already, probably from invoking it and forgetting to cast. I do that all the time.

Encumbrance can also get you zapped. At 2x Arcane symbols I can still fail a cast if I have enough coins on me or something.

Certainly would. I think the cause was already nailed as having a prepped spell. I am just naming other possible causes of unexpected invocation failure.

It's been a while since it last happened to me, but I seem to recall the invoking with a spell prepared messaging to be different. Something involving plasma, but I can't be sure.
