What... the debate's winding down in the other thread, so you start it back up but put a "GTFO Non-Believers" sign over the door? :)

LOL, seriously. And I'm mildly bitter, since I refuse to join that "rep pyramid scheme" thread and get fake rep.

I sometimes wish I could believe in a god, any god. Especially when I was little. My family is Roman Catholic but my mother has been lapsed since teenagerhood. I think she's closer to Buddhist these days than anything, but still. I never went to church at all, except for visiting my friends' churches or temples out of curiosity.

Faith seems comforting, like an old blanket. It's something you can share with others on a cold night and wrap around yourself with certainty in the dark night. I really would like to have a faith. I tried several different sorts of religion when I was younger, from Methodist to Taoism, but.. eh.. I just can't fake what I don't feel no matter how much I'd like to.

Maybe some day. Until then, I'll just have to remain agnostic.

Not in a chance in hell. I had nearly 4 glowy bars when it started, and you had nowhere near that amount.

There's a big difference between 2 and 4 glowy bars. I still have nowhere near the amount of rep you do, and we both have 6. I remember getting the first glowy bar, and it was well before the rep whore thread. I don't remember when they came after that. I'm willing to bet you'd have 8 or 9 glowy bars by now though, if it went up that high. Am I right?

I find the general Western wishy-washy attitude of faith-as-comforting to be generally disturbing. A belief in God calls you to much higher things, including a radical ethic of love which is anything but comforting.

I find the concept of a higher power in the western culture becoming synonymous with the higher power of one particular religious sect very disturbing personally.

-TheE-Really? I don't think that NOT believing in god(s) or an afterlife would encourage you to do the most you can with the only time you have? Or is striving to be your best only reserved for those who believe that god(s) exist?

On a side note: I don't have problem with anyone else's faith, I tend to think God is a multi-faceted being with many different names and manifestations. I just find the inability to believe in God puzzling, as well as the discernment that belief in God is supposed to make one complacently reassured about who they are/what they're worth/that they're going to heaven and you're not.

As to Clove's question - I think people are, at their base, animal. And they will reset to their animal behavior when not exorted by some higher calling - whether it be God, or good will, or Reason, or charity, or what have you - that demands better of them. The only thing is that I see all those latter things as coming from the former.

I'm boycotting this thread because there's no pagan alternatives to 'Wiccan' presented. Boo!

Also, Lia had at least 1-2 glowy boxes a few days prior to the rep whore thread. She was insistent on rubbing her glowy things in my face.

Heh, in Catholic high school, I annoyed my religion teacher with this. She started out the year by trying to establish an absolute with the class. Since it was a Catholic school, she felt reasonably sure that she could call God an absolute. Boy, was she wrong. A couple of us proved very difficult. I remember arguing with her about whether or not a chair was absolutely a chair. I think this went on for a couple of weeks, while we fell further and further behind the lesson plan, before the sister gave up.

Except ancestor worship is generally a facet of a *theistic religion, not the sole worship focus; and Wicca is predominantly duotheistic and very un-representative of most pantheistic belief systems.

Where is animism?!

I'm also not clear how 'non-religious' fits into a question of whether you are a Theist or not.

Your poll makes me cry! You made tortilla chips cry!

Your poll makes me cry! You made tortilla chips cry!Hey there's a maximum of 10 choices in a poll. Deal with it. You pantheistic motherfuckers have Wicca and Hinduism. Animism? You think there's any neolithics on the internet?

Non-religious. You don't have to adhere to a specific religion to believe in god. The Japanese are kind of like that, they plug into whatever religion seems the most relevant to their life at the time.
