I decided I was tired of looking at the cheap Taurus 9mm I had so I went out and bought a new piece today.
I ended up choosing the Smith and Wesson M&P .40 Compact.

I definitely liked the feel of it. Anyone else have this? Any opinions on the choice?

i like S&W for the most part, but their compacts tend to jam. how much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking? $500?

I think it was like $545. They gave me a free box of full metal jacket ammo which is what, 25 dollars nowadays?
I had to go compact over regular because I definitely don't have the build to carry a full sized .40 without it being too noticeable. I hope it doesn't jam too much.

eh, if it does, S&W has a free lifetime warranty (at least they used to, i'm assuming they still do).
go fuck shit up.
Looks like a nice piece. I've always been a fan of S&W, just not the compact autos. I could never get my grip comfortable with them.
I keep intending to get a Sig P229, but that's a nice looking compact.

I'm not a big Taurus fan. I really need to get a Sig compact, but I haven't got around to it. My favorite one so far (which is funny, as I generally don't like their guns) is a Bersa FireStorm .45. I'll take a picture of mine later. For now, here's a generic pic (actually, this is EXACTLY what mine looks like):

Edit: The picture makes it look bigger than it is. When I take a picture of mine, I'll put a pen next to it or something. Kick is pretty low, but it is loud as hell.
Edit2: That's a brushed nickle kind of finish too by the way. That picture also messes with the color a little.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. .357 sig auto. They've got newer more compact versions but this one is just fine. Can swap barrels and mags for .40 as well.

I didn't know you bought that p229? Was it on my advice at least? I vaguely remember a thread with you asking.
Hogue rubber grips are a must trust me if you don't have them you want them.

Choices for a CCW weapon are very case specific. How often one will carry, where, what type of clothes one wants to wear while carrying, bodytype, climate, all play a factor in the decision in picking a gun. That is a fine choice for a gun, but the info I found is that it weighs 1lb 11.5oz unloaded. That is going to really start to drag you down after 5 or 6 hours, especially if it is not secured properly. It just seems... big for a carry gun and it fits as more the primary sidearm for cops rather than a CCW choice.
When I bought my carry gun a few years ago, I ended up going for the S&W 340PD and have been very happy with it. Lightweight, and I can conceal it without having to buy a new wardrobe. For my first gun, I wanted something that was a take anywhere that still had stopping power. At 12 ounces unloaded and the power of a .357, it does both. But, I would not consider it an enjoyable gun to shoot, and it is a bit pricy due to the metals. I don't carry for long periods that often, often end up carrying for shorter periods at night when I am running errands or getting gas, or walking to the grocery store. With the S&W, I can usually drop it into the front pocket of a pair of loose pants or a jacket pocket and it is invisible.
A lot of folks on the boards seem to like some of the larger semi autos. I would consider a number of the guns mentioned as fun shooting guns, or even something to keep in the car, but would not be a first choice of mine for a carry gun due to size issues. Are you folks able to wear jackets year round, or use the old fanny-pack? To those folks to who carry, what do you carry and where/how?

Speaking of light guns... my dad got a Ruger LCP not too long ago, extremely small gun that's pretty cheap. 9.4oz unloaded, .380 auto. Fun little gun for a CCW at only $330 (can be had cheaper)
random googled image of it:

too small and a .380 is a tickle unless you hit a vital. Keep firing it until it's empty. It takes about two minutes before someone can bleed out if you don't hit a vital and that two minutes is enough for them to shoot back.
I'm telling you boys .357 sig auto will stop someone fairly quick. There are smaller versions than the p229 but I swear by it. You can get it in 9mm but .357 version you can swap to .40 cal if you're so inclined.
That and the .357 sig auto round will turn heads at the range. it's a blaster.\
*oh and I hate ruger
If you want a small .380 go with a walther.

I carry a p229 .357 sig sauer auto on my strong side (right hip) in leather usually under an untucked shirt. I have a shoulder holster for when I wear a suit or jacket.

Don't think it'd be my choice either, but it is a fun gun to shoot. He has a walther as well and I fucking love that thing... I'm always doing the spin to the knee and fire James Bond thing with it.

I still want one of these:

I've owned shotguns, rifles, and small hand guns....But I don't even think I'd have the balls to even shoot that thing. CounterStrike has made me want one to put on my wall though.
YOU'VE GOT DEAGLED!
