How many ranks of MIU would be considered sufficient for using say Haste and the like? I don't currently have any enhancives or use imbeds but now that I have wizard access one out of the two would be helpful.

20 ranks allows me to reliably use 414 items. Could get by with 15 ranks, and probably won't ever have more than 30.

For just haste, 10 ranks might work.

Just remember that encumbrance affects activation success. If you have just enough skill to use a magic item, you'll have difficulty using it when weighed down. It's at those times I often use haste imbeds, too.

You can see the equation when you try to activate a magic item. Just start with something low like 10 ranks and test it until you can activate on every attempt. If it is a spell you would likely use in combat like haste or e-wave then you definitely want 0% failure. I doubt 10 ranks will be enough for that.

Especially in Plat, you may want to reconsider. More ranks in MIU makes for a longer duration. Who knows when you might see someone on who can top you off. Even my stupidly physical-trained warrior is nearly .5x in MIU in Plat.

This is a very good point and remember also that MIU is a cheap skill to train when boosting your spellburst ceiling so it doesen't hurt to overtrain it some.

I have 20 ranks in scroll reading now that I never use so maybe I'lll move some of that around.

Except scroll reading allows you to use spells you can't get imbedded. I'm working on 1x scroll/MIU post-cap as we speak.

Right now, I'm aiming for 30 ranks each of A.S. and MIU by 95th, the A.S. mostly so I can see glyph traps before I blow up boxes.

Anyone know how much A.S. is enough that a capped ranger with 1x perception can see the most nasty glyph traps?

May have to rethink my pretty-looking 30/30/30 plan for A.S./MIU/MCS.

Not to mention both help for spellburst allowances. I think the general rule of thumb for MIU is 2x spell level (haste = level 6 spell, 12 ranks = 100% success). But more is better, for all the reasons listed above.

Edit: Oh, spellburst was mentioned. Still a valid point, though ;)

Can you spell burst in one area like the Keen and not in another such as OTF?

droit
02-11-2009, 05:13 PM
Spell burst effects are identical, I think. There are some oddball areas with spell stripping that works differently (like the rift or maag tower), but those aren't technically spell burst.

Correct me if I'm wrong, guys.

OTF/Nelemar = spellburst.
Maaghara = no spellburst, rangers only ones who can wear 618
Rift = no outside circle spells ( Warriors and Rogues can wear 400's and 100's only )

No spellburst in Maaghara? Some goon told me there was and I hunted several levels there without spells. Not that you really need them there. That place is butter.

The Skull Temple is spellburst, as well.

Maaghara is roltons with spells.

Also, spells 911 and I believe 618 are weighted to count more than their regular spellburst numberical amount.

For an one hand ambushing ranger where would be the best place to spend until cap.. OTF or Nelemar?

Maaghara until 80.
Aquaducts/West Woods of OTF until 90 ( focus on gremlocks ambushing and 616'ing the liches )

I chose OTF due to zero child rescues and ease of herb tasks. I also didn't carry any good gear in there, and when I did I auto-departed. Which unless it's a "I'm rich bitch" situation where you can blow 175-225k per death on potions, I wouldn't recommend.

1618 wouldn't count against a ranger though, so it's only 911 that would be a pain.

The bowels are an option too. Stuff there is 82nd to 89th.

I'd say the bowels is the hardest hunting for like-level in the game.

Maybe the best reward too since it's not hunted as heavily as OTF or Nelemar.

Sharnath is 74. Is there any chance of weapon loss in the bowels? I don't want to put up my scythe for fear of losing it.

I never got the chance to hunt the bowels at like level which makes me a sad panda.

I don't have any plans to visit the Bowels just yet just trying to gather a bit of information. Failure to plan is planning to fail.

Too bad you missed hunting fire mages on teras. That was one of my favorite times. If I were you, I'd head over to the rift until the bowels are more viable.

I fucking hate fire mages. It's bullshit that you ALWAYS get hurt when you kill them.

Edit: I'm getting the fuck off of teras as soon as I store up enough favor to get me to the rift.

I wish Sunfist had existed when I was in mages. With sigils of determination, mending and healing, I'd never have to leave mages prematurely.

Won't you build up a shitton of favor IN the rift with all the undead?

The rift is fun, but it has its own little quirks. If you're a hide/ambush kind of person, only about 50% of the rooms an be hidden in and they shift randomly (but not frequently). Shadow mastery is incredibly useful there because of all the time spent sneaking. Don't accept herb bounties for anything with "flesh" in the name because those herbs are all cursed. You can occasionally get "rifted" to higher planes with more dangerous creatures and on those planes there are ways to lose weapons. The vvrael are immune to magic (but not, I believe, an untargetted vine) and caederas can knock you down for 10 seconds just by entering or exiting the room.

One of the best parts of the rift are the skinning bounties. Caedera skins and aivren gizzards sell for up to 3 or 4 thousand each, so I'd highly recommend boning up on your skinning skills before you reach planes 2 and 3. You should also get to know your rift gems lest you find yourself gibbering madly and clawing out your own eyes while something beats you to a pulp. They're quite valuable though.

Those are just a few random things that came to mind. There are many more. It's an incredibly interesting place to hunt.

Doomstones and urglaes fangs are cursed, oblivion quartzes will make you go mad, and aster opals have a variety of effect if you look at them.
