There is nothing that says, "douchebag" louder than retroactively arresting college kids for smoking pot with the greatest Olympic champion in recent history.

Poor Phelps though. I mean I know he should be aware that he's a famous Olympic champion and all, but he can't even enjoy a good smoke with his friends now.

I was going to say nothing says douchebag louder than being an Olympic champion and smoking pot. I didn't like him because of his DUI and I don't like him now. I hope all his medals are taken back.

I hope all his medals are taken back. Why? This has nothing to do with his performances at the Olympics.

For smoking a little dope?

Harsh.

Personally, I never liked him much as a spokesman for any product. He always speaks like he has a mouth full of marbles or something.. but you can't deny his domination in the pool.

Because to me the Olympics is about pure and clean achievement. Doing anything to go against it prior or post should result in being punishment. Look kids that guy won some medals and now he's doing drugs, if you win you can do drugs too. I do believe you hsould be held to a higher standard as a representative of my country.

I agree. Yes pot is illegal but it's not in the same league as stuff like coke/etc or even steroids/etc as an olympic athlete. As an accidental celebrity he should have been more careful with smoking in 'public' though.

See I disagree. It's illegal, don't do it. I mean hell I want to do a cycle or two but since they're illegal I don't. And he's not an accidental celebrity, I'm pretty sure he trained for a minute or two going into the games wanting and trying to win.

How do you feel about the Winter Olympics?

Do you think ANYONE in ANY of the snow sports isn't a pothead?

Just look at Shaun White and try to tell me that with a straight face.

Maybe this should be a wake-up call to the rest of the country that instead of teaching people that "pot=bad" you teach them that "anything+being lazy = bad".

While I'm not so dumb as to think it doesn't go on I do think that if you're caught you should be held accountable and punished.

Basically, marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug so he, Ross Rebagliati, was eventually able to retain his gold medal.

I'm just bitter at Phelps and the swim team because they caused my MAngband character to die. I was successfully fighting off that horde of black orcs until I heard the announcers going nuts on the television and looked up. When I looked back at my computer, the last messages I saw were:

The black orc fires an arrow.
You die.

Life lesson: Don't play real-time games during Olympic events.

The real question is, why didn't Phelps himself get arrested? I mean if I were the prosecutor I would be zeroing in on Phelps especially because of his status as a role model to other kids.

Is this just special treatment because he's a Olympian hero?

I don't think the sheriff is being a douche. One of the dumbass kids who owns the bong was trying to sell it on eBay for 100k. Likely they'd not have been arrested were they not continuing to flaunt it in front of the law like it didn't happen, much less trying to profit off of it.

It's just a matter of time before Phelps gets arrested himself, and if they don't, it's a travesty of justice for the 8 others.

I forget where I read it, maybe Tsa'ah can google it up for us, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the sheriff has a hard-on for drug prosecutions.

I feel for the sheriff. You need to impose law and order and not look the other way. I'm not sure how you do that tactfully in this case -- but it could have been done a little better than rounding up 8 college kids and arresting them.

Pot should not even be illegal in the first place. Just look at the history of how it came to be. I'd insert links but it's easy enough to google. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying those who aspire to be Olympians would be wise to start toking up daily. But seriously, retroactive arrests for pictures of college kids smoking pot? Will this even stand up in court? <-----Serious question. The saddest thing is that this will seriously cripple the opportunities available to these kids for the rest of their lives.

I don't see how it would. A picture can't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they were actually smoking pot. They could probably say they were smoking tobacco or some of that "legal bud" you can buy at head shops, and the court has no way to prove otherwise.

I think the sheriff is just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame. He'll probably be about as successful as Jack Thompson and his anti-videogame crusade.

I fucking hate TMZ. Especially that blond guy that looks like a huge douchebottle. I don't know what it is about him, but I want to punch him in the gut and then ram my knee into his face six times and then powerbomb him like Haggar in Final Fight everytime I see him.

I really don't get how that show gets enough ratings to still be going when all they do is follow around celebrities and talk shit trying to set them off, usually with zero success.

How can anyone prove that Michael Phelps was actually smoking pot in the photo being passed around? Couldn't he have been smoking tobacco? He screwed up by admitting it was pot. There isn't any evidence in the photo.

I'm in the glass pipe/waterpipe business and when I heard of Phelps being busted for smoking out of a waterpipe I thought please let it be my brand, but it wasn't. Fucking roor. I have a really good customer in Columbia too.

If the local authorities in Columbia are going off of people smoking from pipes this won't get very far. They better have pics of them holding actual marijuana.

*just noticed methais touched on the legality issue, sorry*

Uh, once they made the winter olympics and all the ridiculous events that go along with them, your little theory the the olympics should be held to some higher standard was thrown out the window.

If Michael Phelps was smoking pot DURING the Olympics, he should get more medals, not less. They should give him a few extras. How can you focus on swimming when all you really want is that box of taquitos in the freezer?

I sort of agree with Charles Barkley's comments he made once about not being a role model, you the parent should be not trying to off your responsibilities on the media, sports figures or anyone else. You are your childs role model.

Dont give a crap about Phelps personally but agree with PB that you have to admit the man dominates in the pool.

Well....it's actually not illegal to smoke pot. It's only illegal to possess it and to sell it without a US Tax stamp, which there is one...has been one for many many years. They just won't issue any.

I don't feel for the Sheriff. From what I have been reading, he is a major douche. Spent how many millions on an armored personnel carrier/battering ram with a 50mm canon mounted on the top? I mean really....a fucking 50mm canon in the hands of some guy with a hard on for pot smokers? If I lived in that town, I'd pray I didn't live next to a buncha damn skateboarders.

Those tax stamps were ruled unconstitutional and all expired between the 1940's and 1960's I believe.

I never bothered to read on the issue...was just something they glossed over in one of the courses in my CJ minor at college. Wonder how they could be considered unconstitutional since, in effect, the same kind of tax stamps are used for liquor and cigarettes.

My ex was charged with 2 felonies, the charges were possession with the intent to sell & failure to have a tax stamp for the pot in the early 90's in Oklahoma. If you were saying that people couldn't be charged with that anymore.

Unconstitutional in the sense that it violates the Fifth Amendment, anyone seeking the stamp for something that is still illegal is just incriminating themselves.
