So I like the game, and I like the fact it takes a whole lot of time to get to cap, essentially, I like massive time investments. But before I commit would like to know how healthy the game is in terms of number of players and fresh players etc. The last game I played, I hit cap then 2 months later the company went out of business.

This game has been around since the Early to Mid 90's, the playerbase has dropped quite a bit since then obviously with the release of graphical MMOs but because this game has such a dedicated Fan Base, it still exists.
Peak time, you are looking at anywhere from 300-600 people on at once. During Merchant Events, the numbers tend to go up.
Capping, can takes years if you are slow..Which is a good and bad thing I guess. Good because you won't be bored with this game like others when you cap in 2 weeks, bad in the sense where it's a large timesink.
RP is ok, but not spectacular in most places. I personally have been playing since I was like 14, and I am now 27. If you grew up with Dungeons and Dragons, then this game is by far the best fit in comparison to say WoW and other shit out there.

It's quite down from what it used to be, but it's still fairly healthy. Bout 600 at peak times. Prob 1000ish for huge merchants.

Awesome, thats what I like to hear. For some odd reason I can never stay on a graphical MMO for more then a couple of months. Except maybe LOTRO, which is so well done. Text for some odd reason excites me more. Maybe because my job consists of sitting at my computer looking at lines and lines of it all day long... wait a minute.

I like to think it inspires the imagination more. Like reading a book vs. watching a movie. Both are great but with text more is up to you and your individuality.

That and it doesn't look like a game when I'm playing it. So my fiance thinks I'm furiously working on something but in reality I'm just typing stand stand stand.

yeah, that's the nice thing about GS, I used to play it in class all the time. If I played WoW in class now, people would lol at the geek-a-thon.

Tell them it's a new programming project you're helping with ... or a chatroom. That's especially effective if you've got stormfront up and you've got the side menus mostly closed, except for the lists.
