View Full Version : Words that are no longer used.

The other day before i left for home a few of my friends and i were sitting around just chatting and one of them used the word rad. Everyone turned to stare at him, like i would someone who said pop instead of soda before i beat them to death with a brick, and started giving him looks and he had no idea why. I guess it's just not a word we are used to hearing anymore. This might not be the best example but can you think of any words that are no longer used in common speech?

So I was curious if anyone could come up with some words/slang/phrases that aren't common phrases anymore. Im are some of you old folks WEEDIE can come up with some.

ps. I don't mean racial or ethnic slurs and other derogatory words.

I remember when we used to say yo instead of hi. I still do it to annoy people occasionaly. Theres nothing better than an early 90's flashback.

Tubuluar, gnarly, Hella (people in Cali still say this and they are retarded), using the word trey in front of anything. Any word used in any Salt n Pepper song.

I still use dude to try and save it. It's still said, but only by people older than 40. And that's sad. I can't think of any others.

Last night I said...

'Dude! Where's my cah.'

I still say wicked. Not 'wicked cool'. A good example would be 'That was wicked bad!' I say that a lot.

You know, one of friends was teasing me about that word, "wicked". I didn't understand why, until he had to break it down to me. MA = wicked sayers

It's "Yo' momma" now Overlord. I say, dude a lot. I actually say a lot of the old school crap.

"That's fly", "Oh snap", "Why you all up in mah grill?", "Step off". I say a whole bunch of corny shit, just to mess around.

Nah, not stupid. Yo is certainly still used in the NYC area. Perhaps not as often as in the past, but without a doubt used.

And Joisy has its own share of accent accidents.

I of course speak with a crystal clear hard to pin down non accent

In Boston it's "wicked pissah", for you Southies.

And I can't believe no one mentioned "dank", and its popular "diggity dank" alternative. About the only reference I hear that term in nowadays is in the marijuana business, and even that's long, long in my past.

Dude, yo and pop are still used. If you say soda then you are queer.

Soda is what you drink with gin.

I say "Sup, man?" in place of "Sup dude".

Awesome is still said a lot, for whoever said it's not.

And in the south it is either Soda or Coke. Coke is the generic name for all carbonated drinks.

"You want a coke?"

Anyone who says pop gets SHOT IN THE FACE in Texas.

Beatnik is not a good example. It is not that the word is not used any more but that there aren't really any 'beatniks' any more. Beatnik isn't slang and is applied to a specific group of people.

True, I suppose. But I thought... what the heck? One of my relatives used to have a beatnik doll that talked. She would say (after you pulled the string) 'Dig my crazy black stockings.' Or... 'I'm hip. Like you know, a beatnik.' Said other things too. Wild doll. Remember the beatniks in Hairspray? Sorry... just rambling about beatniks. Heh.

Couple more:

yuppies
psychedelic
copacetic (I think George Carlin had a bit about being copacetic)
split

(suppose yippies and yuppies could fall in with beatniks)
