I'm looking to collect some data on the DS penalty associated with 607. If you have a minute or two, I'd really appreciate some help, especially from lower level rangers who are still training in ranger spells.

What I need you to do is to find another player character who is your level or lower (<--important), take a swing at them, cast sounds on them, then take another swing. Then just post here what the DS difference was and how many ranger spell ranks you have.

Not a whole lot of people will be able to track down another person to do this... I have a lvl 6 ranger (rather close to 7, didn't feel like playing him but... you're a nice guy so why not). Once he hits 7 if you or someone else has a character for me to test against that'll do. (4.5k to go on XXX, so... about an hour?)

You needn't bother. At 7th level, the bonus will be a flat 20. What I really need are people with ranger ranks in the middle range, like 20-60. I'm just trying to pin down the relationship between further ranger ranks and the DS penalty, which starts at -20 at 7 ranks and caps at -50 at 70 ranks. I know it's sort of a shot in the dark, but it's worth trying.

Could I cast from a scroll as a non-ranger and still be helpful?

I don't believe so, Evarin. The DS penalty is based entirely off of ranger spell ranks, so scroll casting would only be at base effectiveness (I think. Might as well try a cast for the heck of it). Thanks though.

Assuming things are all clean and linear, is it too early to conclude (from four data points) that the DS reduction increases by 2 points for every 3 ranger ranks above 25th? The 38-point reduction at 53 ranks would also seem to indicate that results are rounded down.

The problem with figuring this out is that I'm relying on other people to collect the data but I don't trust their results. Here are the data points I have so far:

Ranks: DS Penalty
7: 20
8: 20
18: 20
28: 20
40: 30
50: 38
53: 38
54: 39
55: 40
60: 43
70: 50

See if you can make some sense of that.

The higher-rank numbers seem to suggest a .67 DS reduction per rank above 25th, truncated.

Perhaps the 28-rank and 50-rank testers failed to use a lower-level target?

Entirely possible. I remember that the rank 28 person reported that they were getting a 20 DS reduction versus a (supposedly) lower level character, but they saw a 22 reduction versus creatures...

...which fits with the formula! Good work!

DS penalty = ((Ranger Ranks - 25)*(2/3))+20, with a minimum of 20.
