What would be the benefit of training in brawling for a sorc that isn't in voln..?
Is it because it helps DS? Anyone else know of any reasons?

Helps with DS, helps protect you in CvC against Voln Fu, less expensive than Sword and Board in terms of weapon training, gives you an open hand for channelling.

Would it be better to just use the points elsewhere? Like lores for instance?

That depends. If you mean to use a shield, I would definitely pick up brawling instead of other magical ranks. If you're using a runestaff, then no. Invest the points into more magical skills to get a higher Skills per level ratio. Also, always go Tower if you're going 1x Shield Use 0x dodge.

Uh..what? It's almost twice as expencive.
Edged - 6/2
Blunt - 6/2
Brawling - 10/2

...huh. I think it USED to be less costly, or atleast the same. Good to know. Thanks for the correction.

To take this a step further, a brawling build and a runestaff build negate each other for defensive purposes, since you carry the staff in the right hand, but must have the right hand free for the brawling bonus.
So, it's either shield/brawl OR runestaff for DS. You can obviously do both, as I do now, if you have the TP's for it, and switch it up a bit.
If you're planning on Fu'ing, that's one thing they didn't nerf the shit out of (yet). According to someone's who's done it with a DE sorcerer, you'll start to fall short at around level 60 without a lot of set up.
Anecdotally, I was amazed to see my empty handed DS in offensive right now is 450, with my usual spell set, and only 40 ranks of brawling.
