I got an armor question and was wondering if any of you melee mechanics gurus could help me out.
This is about robes and I understand the majority of people don't like robes, but I hope your willing to put that aside and help me figgure out what I need to know.
Ok, so I have 0 armor ranks because I like to wear robes. Robes apparently cover the chest only so I was considering purchasing some enhancive arm greaves and enhancive leg greaves to spruce things up a bit.
Well I was wondering what happens when I put on a set of arm and leg greaves. Do I now have to add armor ranks to off-set any RT or manuver penalties? If so, how much per set of greaves?
Inquiring minds would like to know...

Nothing at all happens. There is nothing above robes in the cloth class, so there's nothing for it to bump you up to. Add accessories all you want.

I don't know either way, but best way to find out for sure is to put on some greaves and a helm and rapid fire cast 401 or something spell to see if it gets hindrance.

As Liagala stated, there are no sub-groups in the cloth armor group. Robes, for all intents and purposes, act as full coverage cloth. The main advantage to wearing robes aside from aesthetics vs no armor is their ability to be enchanted and padded.
You will not need any additional armor ranks if you accessorize since the only mechanical advantage would be the intrinsic characteristics of the greaves, helm etc. You will, however, increase your character's encumbrance.

The other thing to consider is if your robes have any padding or flares, adding accessories may interfere with their effectiveness. Accessories that are simply enhancive won't interfere with any padding you have, but they will prevent flares from activating on the covered body parts. If the accessories do have flares or padding, they will reduce the padding of your robes.
