We discussed this somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. There was a link on AOL today, describing the best burgers that I found interesting. There's now a small burger stand in St. Petersburg, FL I need to try out:

http://www.digitalcity.com/2009/01/21/best-burgers-of-the-united-states-of-america/

I do agree with their opinions of Five Guys and Webber...

Yuck. I don't like any artificial flavoring on my burgers.. just give it to me 'au-natural'. If I want a great burger, I make them like this:

1) Take a good chuck roast and grind it up.
2) Press into 1/2 pound patties.
3) Season with a combination of: Onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
4) Heat grill with a combination of chunk charcoal and chunk hickory wood. Put top on. Make it REAL hot.
5) Once grill is hot, put on more hickory wood. Wait 5 minutes and place burgers in the center of the grill.
6) Turn a total of 4 times, each time rotating the burger just under 90 degrees for perfect grill marks. Time depends on how you like it done (I prefer medium)
7) Take HIGH QUALITY hamburger buns and butter each side, placing open side down on hot pan. Place something of weight on top (I actually have 2 paddles from Steak N Shake burger I use )
8) When burger is done to your taste, remove from heat and place on a warm plate. Cover with aluminum foil for 3-4 minutes.
9) Put burger together with dill pickle slices, mustard and ketchup.
10) Enjoy

Adding condiments after the fact is different than adding sauces into the meat before cooking. I would say teriyaki would hide the flavor of the meat as well.

I like lettuce, tomato, onions (raw or cooked), mustard, mayo and ketchup on my burger. Not a fan of pickles on my burger though. I like pickles, just not IN sandwiches.

Home-grilled burgers always win. 1% meat with the rest of the 99% percent dripping in kerosene from your own BBQ is always > than restaurant burgers. I'm sorry.

I want to barbeque in the winter. I don't see wtf the problem is if we have a day in the upper 40s. Did someone make up a rule about not being allowed to BBQ in the Winter across New England? BULLSHIT.

That has gotta be a huge advantage to living somewhere warm. 24/7 year-round grilling? Win? Yes?

Nothing I've found in Boston even comes close to comparing. The burgers I've had here are clearly those frozen ones that come 100 in a pack and are separated by little pieces of wax paper.

In fact, Boston has pretty shitty food overall compared to NYC, with a few (stupidly expensive) exceptions.

I dunno about best burger ever, but the best burger i've ever had in Atlanta is the cheeseburger from Rafferty's. I usually get the filet because it's the best steak i've ever had anywhere, ever, however when i'm in the mood for a good burger and i'm up by my school, i'll head there. It's smoked somehow and it's just the most delicious, juicy burger i've ever had. Mayo, ketchup, cheese, lite lettuce, and extra pickles.

They also have the best cheese fries, *ever, anywhere*. The ranch dressing has egg and some other godlyness in it, and it's dusted with spices. I'm so hungry. :(

El Cap

St Petersburg, FL 33704-1310
Phone: (727) 521-1314

Here's a write up review by the St. Petersburg Times:

ST. PETERSBURG - Is there something new at El Cap? No. Should there be?

Well, the joint has caught onto those newfangled chicken wings and the whaddya-call-em cheesesteaks from up in Philadelphia, but the menu at El Cap hasn't really changed much in decades. The only real novelty is nuggetized corn dogs. (How many does it take to produce a litter of 10 corn pups?)

El Cap is the same as it always has been, which is why we go there and fill up the place daily. Oh yeah, you can use a credit card and smokers sit outside now, but drinkers and eaters, sports talkers and arguers still sit inside, where they can debate the state of the Rays, Bucs or Lightning with a barfly or a TV screen. Burgers and sports come first here and have since 1964.

A more useful question is whether there's anything to eat besides burgers? Not that there needs to be, for El Cap's signature is still a fine use for freshly ground beef, best enjoyed full-bore with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onions. The pickles are those redesigned ovals the size of a racetrack, but I forgive that and add it up to the sloppy joys of the best d.i.y.-burgers. I like my onions grilled, to add to the mess (and don't tell the ninnies, I'll have my burger rare, too.) The true gourmand doubles up on the patties. But I demurred. Really.

If you've never gotten beyond the burgers, you might be surprised. It's a short list, almost all sandwiches, but it's not bar food or even deli stuff. El Cap serves the kind of simple sandwiches you can't get anymore: Swiss cheese on white bread (get rye to be exotic), complete with an Alpine joke. Or liverwurst, or ham, or salami. Yes, they lay it on heavy, but it won't have any trimmings unless you want 'em (and pay extra).

These are the sandwiches your parents made at home on a Saturday, not the work of a generous or feisty counterman. I almost expected to see pickle loaf and waxed paper bags. While there's a grilled cheese, pork tenderloin and other hot sandwiches, there's no meatloaf, chicken pot pie or other nostalgic heart-warmers. The best here is cold comfortfood, but comforting, indeed, in a wrap-warped world. Bring on the cole slaw. Real chicken salad? Yep, crunchy with onion, slippery with mayo, it fills almost an inch between the bread and spills beyond. Few make 'em like that anymore.

Chili is like home, too, at least my home, not real thick, a bit oily, kicked up with a little chili powder. But the kitchen does go beyond Mom and Dad on a few items. We never had fries as crisp as El Cap's, never grilled an Italian sub and only rarely had leftover meatballs around for a sub (a Tuesday special). And El Cap does make a fair fried grouper sandwich, not the best on the beach, but good eating.

There is no dessert and only a little wine and wine coolers. The beverage of choice is beer, and it's not a bad range, with $1.20 drafts, $1.75 cans of PBR, and Yeungling, Genny Cream, Newcastle and Warsteiner the best of the bottles.

The icing is the homey atmosphere, which you ought to pick up from the rathskellar decor (okay with 16 TVs), underscored by bartenders and servers who treat you as family. Maybe ornery relatives, but still family. One pro brought our burgers with instructions. "Be careful there. You might want to turn it over and eat it that way. The bottom half of the bun gets wettest first." We would have figured that out, Mom. Honest, we would have. But thanks.

Home-grilled ftw I agree. I don't see a problem with bbqing ing the winter I used to live in nw IN and had to shovel my grill out of a three ft snowdrift to grill up some ribs you just have to kinda hover over the grill to stay warm and make sure to rotate so you get done on all sides. But I don't do the kerosene I use charcoal in a chimney lit with the burner from my turkey fryer 10 minutes from start to grill :)

Oh, I had a kobe beef burger (think it was $25 for it) here also - frankly it was awesome, particularly because of the shaved truffle on it, and the fries. It honestly didn't taste much different than a regular burger though (a good one of course). I think grinding up kobe for a burger wastes it.

Best burger: Good ground beef, A1 sauce, bacon, tomato, battered and fried onion rings, cheese (of your choosing), and a little mayo . $ .

Aside: At this moment I'm making a sign for 5 Guys. Damn vinyl isn't coming off easy. At least I got a free lunch.

How is it that so many people not from Cali know about In-N-Out? I’ve seen stickers on cars out here about as far away from LA as is possible.

I have relatives who live in Cali. My brother took me once and I've been hooked ever since. First stop off the plane is to an In-N-Out burger. I always hit one up when we're in Vegas too.

There's a Five Guys here, we're going there for lunch today.

LONDON — It's known as the home of 'The Whopper' and Burger King is hoping its latest product really lives up to its reputation. The fast-food giant launched a $200 burger Wednesday — all in the name of charity.

Setting a new record, the world's most expensive burger is available at just one restaurant in West London, England, once a week — but it will eventually be available to order via a hotline.

The fine ingredients of what is called simply 'The Burger' include Wagyu beef, white truffles, Pata Negra ham slices, Cristal onion straws, Modena balsamic vinegar, lambs lettuce, pink Himalayan rock salt, organic white wine and shallot infused mayonnaise in an Iranian saffron and white truffle dusted bun.

Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson told Sky News Online: "It sounds delicious. The ingredients are very good and high powered, but why are Burger King doing it?"

All the proceeds from The Burger sales will go to the Help A London Child charity, which assists young people experiencing abuse, homelessness, disability, poverty and illness.

David Kisilevsky, at Burger King, said: "The Burger reflects our ongoing commitment to producing for a range of different pockets."

This thread makes me very insecure about my manhood.

Hmmm, well this is a local institution in Western MA.

The White Hut restaurant has been providing the highest quality hamburgs and hot dogs to the greater Springfield area for 67 years. Throughout those years, its humble 600 square feet of space and twelve stools have served millions with consistency and simplicity. In its third generation of ownership, the business continues to grow offering longtime loyal customers as well as new customers the opportunity to "relish the White Hut experience."

Burgers, cheseburgers, dogs, fries...

And some of the best fried onions ever.

What one review said (http://www.whitehut.com/phantom.html)

The Hot Dog arrived first. The frank was crisp and riveted with cracks from a bath in the fry-o-later, before being finished on the grill. The top-cut buns are toasted in a sandwich press and all together each bite brought a simple expression of joy. White Hut’s Cheeseburgers start out as ordinary griddle burgers that are elevated by the addition of fried onions. The mound of onion strings sits on the back of the stove and slowly caramelize adding a sweet counterpoint to the robust beef and sharp mustard

Shhh. Phantom doesn’t want any more people to know about the tiny restaurant, so don’t tell anyone that his Cheeseburger, two Hot Dogs, Fries, and three sodas only cost eight bucks and change.

Local biz ftw!

better fries than 5 guys? is that even possible?

You raise an interesting point here. We are talking about best burgers. While a fry can be a compliment to a burger, and the two as a whole package can be a tremendous dining experience, I have to say that while 5 Guys fries are worthy of salt and vinegar they are not the best fries in town.

If you want the best pom frit thats another story.

We made it to Five Guys. The burgers weren't bad, the fries were like every other fresh cut type fry I've had, nothing special.

I missed the toasted bun, big piece of raw onion and spread that I get at In-N-Out. I was secretly hoping that I'd be like nom nom nom having found a temporary replacement for INO.

My husband is a much bigger connoisseur of burgers than I. He said that he much preferred a burger from Ted's or a regional chain called Max & Erma's.

I made a burger the other day that was so epic I've seriously given thought to putting shop up in a college town for the sole purpose of selling said burger late night to drunk kids.

~1/3 lb of ground beef
2 fried eggs
4 slices of muenster
4 battered cheese sticks
3 chicken tenders
Fries
Large ghetto-brand hamburger bun

This weekend, I'm going to recreate this and replace the hamburger bun with 2 Red Baron supreme singles.

not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet but...this recipe is missing one thing and one thing only... BACON!

HOW DARE YOU FORGET THE VERY LIFE FORCE OF EARTH THAT IS BACON!

10) Enjoy

Seems to me that beef doesn't naturally come onion, garlic, or hickory flavored. Maybe I'm just not buying the right beef though.

On topic: A little drive through I used to work at in one of the Minneapolis 'burbs had the best burgers I've ever tasted, bar none.
