Just got offered a job in the Alaskan back country (aka 90 minute snowmobile ride from the nearest settlement with a landing strip).

Anyone got any winter gear they are looking to sell? I don't think my board shirts will suffice....

If you consider living in tents with no running water, tracking birds all day for 5 months a great job. If so, its a great job.

FYI - it is called the bush not the back country and we don't ride snowmobiles they are snowmachines or sleds and we call them villages not settlements.

Thought you better know that before you get here so you don't sound like an idiot saying snowmobile and other stupid shit.

Watch out for the vampires that hunt during the month-long darkness, too.

(seriously, sounds like an awesome opportunity... plus, lots of meth availability)

Snowmachines?! What do you use to make snow for the ski slopes?! Everyone know they're skidoos!

You should get dogsleds. I had a crazy husky once. It hated eating, sleeping, and drinking. It loved pooping, peeing, and towing a cinder block around the parking lot for hours.

I think the temperature is tremendously different for areas like Fairbanks vs. Juno. I don't actually know if that's true or not or if it's just witch titty cold year 'round. Suffice to say, watch out for the Russians.

I'll be right on the Bering Sea looking into Russia's backyard.

Somewhere around that red dot.

Alright, see if you can gather any hard intel on some cheap vodka because it's like the only hard liquor I can drink and I'm tired of forking over $25 for 750mL Absolut Citron because the larger bottles don't fit in my fridge and the Connecticut Russian syndicates steal all the non-frooty vodka before I can buy some.

Also, since that red dot is sort of in the middle of Alaska and by the water, it'll probably be in the middling temperature range but you'll get some ocean breezes that'll usually lower the temperature like 5 degrees from its usual norm. Fack.

That's not the Russian Syndicates.. it's women buying the flavored vodkas.

We called them snowmobiles when we lived there. And I was a fucking daredevil on them. Just something about knowing I would land on snow and being all bundled up with layers and layers of insulation made me reckless.

I'm betting from the dot on the map you posted that your internet access will be uh, not so great? Anyway, give more details of the job/employer. I'm curious now.

No internet, get a 20 minute phone call on the satellite phone once a month or so, no showers, re-supply food once a month or so.

Actually employed by the university of nevada of all people.

So if you got anything super important to tell me, you better do it now.

And this is what I will be researching.

I am pretty sure the only showers I will be getting out there are the golden variety.

Screw research, ducks are for eating.

So what do you get paid for all the lifestyle sacrifices you'll have to make? And I don't have much in the way of advice since we lived in a regular house in a regular town. I'm not into hardship.

I hope you get time off occasionally so you can go explore Alaska. I loved it. Spent a summer there when I was little and didn't want to leave. Went from tank tops and shorts to snow pants and parkas just by going from city to city. I can still play with my seal fur and sinew "Eskimo yo-yo" that I picked up there. Dawson City is cute. Sitka is pretty. Silver City is hilarious.

It's such an enormous state I don't think it would be possible to explore much of it on an occasional day or two off. Especially being in the bush. Maybe they will fly you guys to Anchorage or Fairbanks once in a while for a weekend. Hey, it could happen!

Anchorage bars are just as fascinating as the wildlife.

No days off. Once the snow melts its a 4 hour boat ride to town. 7 days a week for about 5 months. I'll explore later and then maybe grab my board and hit the slopes when the season starts.

Regular homes in regular towns are the epitomy of boredom. I am not making any lifestyle sacrifices. I'll just be rocking out and not getting laid in a different state.

Ok, so i'm jealous you'll have snow and cold, and that's about it.
