wiring my parents house with ethernet jacks. I've got connection running from the router to the switch, I used the same wire configuration on the out from the switch and i've tried both configurations labeled on the wall plugs and neither have worked. Any suggestions?

Have you tried just connecting the jacks straight to the router instead of using the switch? Most routers have at least 4 ports on the back, how many plugs are they needing? I have my PC and LocationFree Base Station wired to my router and I connect my PS3 wirelessly to it and they never have any conflicts.

Are you using the proper cable type? I'm not sure it's an issue w/ newer equipment, but patch vs passthrough cables (you can check the colors on the wires on the actual connector if it's clear and see if they are identical or if they switch positions).

I'm putting the connectors on, I did a short test cable directly from router to computer and it worked fine. I can't run everything from my router due to how far it is from the basement and I actually need at least 5 out. For xbox, ps2, computers, directv etc.

I just helped friends move into a new house out in North Tampa.. and EVERY room was wired for cable and eithernet... as well as every room had a dedicated power outlet with a lightning suppression system. They also had a small closet that was specifically designed for bringing in and distributing the power, internet and cable system throughout the home. It was amazing. Everything was labeled and everything was pretty damn easy to understand and utilize.
Now I want to move...

Yeah, my next home will have a "control room" where everything goes. I saw a house two weeks ago for only $190k that had a kick ass set up.

<<but patch vs passthrough cables>>
Patch cables and passthrough cables are the same thing? The problem would be if you were using a crossover cable instead of a patch cable, but it's hard to fuck that up (unless you're making the cables yourself, and then it's a matter of using 568A on one end and 568B on the other).

Yea.. it was impressive. Surround sound set up in the main living room with speaker stands on the ceiling.. all the jack outlets where the TV would go. A sound system throughout the house with a control in each room. They also had some small white covers in the ceiling in the kitchen, dining and living room which I couldn't figure out what they were for.

Little elevators come down from the ceiling and tiny robots trundle out. After they all raise their little stubby robot arms, they combine (voltron like) into a fully functional and human sized Irobot Roomba 900k Automatic Vacuum and Self-Aware house servant.
It will, of course, be dressed in formal butler clothing. And black "skinned".
