Ok so holy crap holy crap I found out today I got accepted to my school's nursing program (bachelor's). I know it's not ivy league or anything, but it's VERY competitive (they accepted about 50 students out of like 2k applicants for this coming summer semester) and I was worried even with my 3.92 GPA and 115ish credits. After dicking around at school for so long and being miserable in IT, I finally settled on this and so far i've been very happy with my choice. Being accepted has been like reaching a HUGE HUGE HUGE goal for me. I almost started crying after I got the letter today because I was so relieved I didn't have to worry about what I was gonna do if I didn't get in (cause I didn't bother coming up with Plan B).
So what RL goals have you guys met recently, or still long to meet? Personal, professional, w/e. Share plz. :)

I'm aiming not to horribly maim myself this semester. We're doing some large scale statue casting. Huge space suit style stuff, horrible heat backdrafts, giant crucibles full of molten bronze. It'll be awesome!

Edited to Add: Congratulations! I'd trust you with a thermometer in my rectum. That is pure

Congratulations. I know how hard it is to actually get into nursing school. I bet you are ecstatic.
My goals... too many to name. I'd be happy if my house were organized. I suck at that. I would also like to find a handy man. I'm serious. A good person that doesn't charge an arm and a leg to change out the bulb in my oh so high foyer and do some work on the outside. It's just so hard to find trustworthy people these days. Not so sure that's a goal, but getting my house in order is and that figures in so...

Congrats, Diethx! Hope you do well in the program.
I'm taking my candidacy exams for my PhD in March. Last step before the dissertation. Assuming I do well on those, I'll have passed a major goal - though not so significant of one as the actual degree, of course. That'll come in a few.

I don't know where you live, but if it's in Atlanta or the surrounding areas, I can get you my father in law's phone number. He's an electrician but he will do most anything in the "handyman" category. He's very good at what he does, very honest, and ridiculously low priced to the point where J is constantly trying to get him to raise prices to be on par with the rest of the market, heh.

I CALL BS UNTIL I SEE SOME SKIMPY NURSE OUTFIT AS PROOF.
Plz, plz, plz, plz, plz. Please, I'm so lonely :(
The past couple of years now a friend of mine makes everyone choose a word that will be their focus for the new year. Last year mine was “success” as it related to the start-up I am involved in. I’m satisfied that my participation, as well as my colleagues, has resulted in success based on our sales numbers in this economy.
This year I have picked “determination” as it relates to everything in my life. I have not chosen to drastically change anything over-night but rather to remain determined to improve everything in incremental steps.
I spend a little bit of time on everything I want to improve almost every day. My most satisfying achievement so far has been completing my first week of tracking my finances to the penny every single day for one week using an Excel spreadsheet. With this now accomplished I can project a yearly budget and see where I have been wasteful or indulgent.
The coolest thing is that I enjoy it. I’m a gamer so I plan to min/max the hell out of my life.

Congratulations. I hope to be accepted to my school's nursing program in March. Since I have a 4.0 and I am a middle aged male and all of my other classes have been taken I think I have a better than average chance of making it. 19 spots for 130 some odd applicants so far. I know how proud you must be to make it into a nursing program with the competition the way it is. Once again, congratulations.

Now...I've got 2 years left of school of aBA and I have no clue wtf I want to major in. Used to be an education major but fuck that shit. I can barely make Chuck ECheeeze.

That's a pretty big stretch for a base salary for an undergrad. Even investment banks (pre-meltdown) topped out at $65K, although the potential for bonuses pushed comp significantly higher.
Getting an internship after only two years of college is difficult, since most companies prefer juniors who they can then extend a full-time offer to before returning to college for their last year.

Here comes the party pooper.
As much as I want to congratulate you on your goals, I'd like to personally serve as a warning to others who think too far in advance without understanding how important living in the moment is.
I used to have goals. Get a master's degree, get married, buy a house, make six figures, blah blah blah. Problem is that I've achieved them all and can't figure out what to do now. The costs of having those goals was not realizing the downside.
By the time I got my master's degree I had forgotten why I had wanted to, and I really would have rather spent my youth doing something more fun. Getting married was great until I stopped worrying about it constantly and started to settle down. Then it sucked hard because I learned that all people change, I'm pretty sure I won't make that mistake again. Buying a house was awesome until I realized how it locks you into a place that can be far away from places you'd rather be. Making a six figure income is great at first, but then the whole concept of money becomes kind of pointless, especially to a single guy who just turned 30 a week ago.
So I've given up on goals. Now, I just do things for fun. Invest $3000 randomly in the stock market, go all the way to Iraq to chase after a girl who doesn't even like me, become enamored with a pagan religion.
So anyway, like I said. Congrats on what you've accomplished, just remember to have fun too.

Well, I haven't done any BIG goals recently, I been fixing up my house (home improvement thread) and working toward some of my bigger goals. I guess I can consider buying a home before 30 a decent goal I've hit. I guess I can include my 3.86 GPA, but I still haven't completed my 4th year in college, and frankly, I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish.
Some goals I am working towards are:
Opening my store (have the pre-approved SBA loan and an investor, just waiting for a better time and location). Honestly, I don't see this happening so fast anymore, and possible might want to reconsider some things with the way the market has been going.
Buy a bigger home. Our current home is a bit too small and really was just an investment. We're hoping to get something more like 4 BR, 2.5 Bath and about 2300+ sq ft. This won't happen until...
We leave South Bend. Hoping to go somewhere a bit more warm.
And if the store opening doesn't end up working out for whatever reason, I'd like to work for a decent marketing firm.

Classes start in March for me if they can figure out my military credits....apparently there is no solid standard for the courses I took in the Corps and they say "We know it's worth something but we aren't sure how much" so I keep getting delayed for my BS BIS.
Get my EMT, just to have it.

Finish one of the books I started writing last year!!!! I have two that I dabble at but I want to focus on one and finish the darn thing before the baby comes.
Find a house both my husband and I can agree on. We need more room! If we are lucky, we could be closing on one in March. Four bedroom with three baths. Hard wood floors. A finished basement for the kids toys! *shiver*
Come up with a boys name. We have a girl's all picked out. Rebecca. It would be a terrible name for a boy though.
Worry less about the small stuff and just enjoy life.

na if its hung up anywhere its like indianapolis or something.
basically when you cross over to a different service (in my case army to navy) and you still have an obligation to one of them (army) you have to get a conditional release form stating that if you do sign a contract with someone else, it voids your contract with them.
its really all im waiting on. the recruiter sent off for it like almost two months ago. so i think they either forgot to send off for it, or it got lost somewhere in the black hole that is army paperwork.

Have you taken an actuarial exam yet? They aren't kidding when they say you need to study 300 hours for one. I'm not trying to discourage you too much, but if you're going to major in math and try to take 3 exams, you really won't have any social life to speak of.
edit: 3 of my good friends are actuaries, and I considered it as a career for a while
edit2: you can get a lot closer to 70k if you pump your 401k early on. most employers will match you up to 10-15k/year, which will go far to increase your benefits, but not take home pay.

What everybody else said. Plus it consisted me of filling out maybe 2 papers, writing a check for $75, and then going home and getting the papers out of my mailbox a few days later, so paperwork wasn't exactly a problem either.
I thought this whole thing was a gag. (pun intended) That is very cool, Meth. Good luck with it. Remember to keep a tip jar out.
Ha, no it's for real. If I can get set up in the spot I want (over by a bunch of chemical plants not far from here that have pretty much nothing except a gas station within a few miles and a few thousand hungry blue collar workers), I should hopefully make a killing.
I don't have any debt from this either, as it was a pretty low startup, so even if I don't sell anything and the whole thing tanks, I'm not as risk of losing anything except the money I already invested out of pocket (most of which I could recover, as the cart itself was the only major purchase, and that was only $2500 off ebay for a cart that sells for $6000 new, and it's in almost perfect shape), which was pretty much free anyway (thanks Gustav).
So yeah. If it works out like I'm hoping, party at Meth's this summer.
This is the model cart I'm using, mine's older. The new ones probably have some slightly different features, but overall this is the same cart I'm using, except my pan setup is a bit different, as I dropped a big steam pan in the middle. And I don't have that enclosure thing that's on the right side in the last shot that makes it look gigantic.
BUT I HAVE AN UMBRELLA!!!!!1

I plan on having chili too, and I'd also like to serve meatball subs, because who the fuck doesn't like meatball subs? Especially if I can get my grandma's sauce recipe. Italian grandma recipes ftw.
If you do meatball subs just make sure you have mayo for the koreans.

For srs. And CHEESE DOGS, BABY. Not cheese on the inside, but sweet sweet melty cheese to put on the top. Cheese sauce too, not melted slice cheese that gets cold and plastic-y quickfast.

Research. Grad School.
Napa and Los Angeles for a few weeks with my boyfriend, his best friend, and his best friend's GF for their wedding (woot!). Lose weight for such event so I can not look like a cow in blue. Watch iron intake while doing this so as not to become anemic again. Eat this semester.
Plan having a baby since I was told at Thanksgiving that I have kidneys better than a normal person's (which is funny since I was told they were failing 6 years ago). -Consider suing that hospital.
Try to be a calmer person.

On topic: congrats diethx! After having a baby I've decided its the NURSES that deserve the higher pay over the doctors. They deal with some of the nastiest, goriest, god damn disgusting stuff I've never wanted to experience in my life. So I commend you.
Goals for me?
Get a job.
Get a job.
GET A JOB.
I've decided I'd like to really pursue a career in the steel industry because it falls into alignment with my sculpture welding. Since the family-run steel business I was working for is on its way to tanking - I know I'd still like to continue in that industry.
Pay off my CC in 3 years.
Start slowly and take a class at a time towards a Masters in Art History.
Take a REAL family vacation next summer.
Start putting my pieces up in a gallery.

Hey, on the flip side, I imagine the maternity ward to be the most rewarding when weighing it against the yucky parts.
I don't deal with blood, guts, and gore very well so it may seem worse for me. But there's a lot of vagina, bodily fluids, hemorrhoids, and IV's to think about. (I had to be pinned to the bed by a nurse and my husband to flush one of my lines out once, I almost ran out through the wall (cartoon silhouette-style) to get away from them.
BUT! You get to see a miracle happen as part of your JOB. That can be seriously cool. To be honest, I have more respect for the nurses that helped me in the hospital than the doctors ever had.

Yeah, i'm generally okay with gore, blood, vagina and pooping on the table and stuff. And you're right, the trade-off is worth it. Do the nurses really cut and stitch the vagina though? I thought the docs did that. Not that i'd have an issue with it if I had to do it eventually.

No, they don't. At least mine didn't. But I did have a nurse coaching me to push for like the first 60% of the pushing. As soon as he looked like he was gonna pop out my doc moved her aside to catch him. I love my OB/GYN (she's fucking hysterical) but yeah, I've decided nurses do the brunt of the work.

That's alright, it's still worth it imho (at this point in time anyhow). I'm just glad i'm happy with this decision since it took me SO long to get here. My only real reservation about it is that i'm afraid I might screw up and hurt someone, but I suppose that's a normal fear.

Oh that's not what I meant, I just meant about being a nurse in general. I'm afraid i'll grab the wrong medicine in a hurry or just make some human error and hurt someone. But I know that's definitely a common fear, cause a serious mistake can end a career. You know, besides hurting someone heh.

While we're on this topic, let me give you some advice. Triple check. Always. Even after 10 years in the field. Triple check. Someone gave our son the wrong breastmilk and all it took was for her to match the numbers on the bottle to the numbers on his wristband (which she should have done). Anyhoo..

I know at least in Cali, in the wake of Cedar Sinai, they're pushing for a nurse's bill of rights. It says that no fewer than x number of nurses can be on call at a time, mandating a lower patient:care ratio, nurses need breaks at x hours (apparently, there's a problem with nurses pulling 24 hour shifts there), and some other things ... like mandatory white thigh highs to go with the red and white dresses and stiletto heels :) . But really, NPR is your friend at 4 am when you can't sleep.
My distrust of doctors is only upstaged by my dislike of them as the prima donas of our medical system. I agree nurses should get a pay raise, but that's mainly because classically, nurses have given me better care than doctors; also meeting with a nurse doesn't spike my systolic and diastolic readings by about 30 points. So yay for nurses; may they all receive pay raises and live rich and happy. Congrats Stef!
