I just thought a few of you might like this. If you read The Sword of Truth series and liked it, don't expect this show to follow it too closely. (at all) Yes, it was done by the people that did Xena, but not quite as corny. (though I liked Xena anyway) If you didn't read the books (or even if you read them), you might just like the show. New season started last week. This is the first season.

Lots of other good shows on Hulu too. Arrested Development is hilarious if you haven't ever watched that.

I found the people that read the books pretty much hate it. The thing I hate about it is they could expand just a bit more and make it lots better. A few people that didn't read the books and watched it liked it. (I think more for the cleavage than anything... heh)

I can understand people watching it for humor. ;)

Eh, I watch it. There's been a lot worse stuff on, especially in the limited fantasy genre stuff that does make it to tv.

All in all, I give it a 6 or so out of 10. Enjoyable enough but if I didn't have tivo to watch it whenever I wanted I doubt I'd go out of my way for it.

I will say the last episode with the Mord Sith (Episode 6 I think) was by far the best so far.

I read the books and can't really stand the show, but it's not so much because of the way they completely altered the story (though that does irk me), but more because the characters don't resemble their literary versions at all. They've made them into these stock fantasy characters in the show, lacking the intelligence and self-assurance of the ones in the book.

I never fully understood a bodice until I saw this show.

My gf sort of made me watch it, it was ok, some nice boobage...

But she definetly watches/watched the dumbest series of all time... Roswell. God it was corny.

Yeah, they totally got Richard all wrong. Kalen, however, sort of looks like I pictured her. Stock fantasy characters can be fun if you're bored. I've been sick for like 2 weeks now and was running out of things to watch. I'm pretty easy to please. And yes, lots of boobage in every show.

Again, if you've read the books, don't expect the books or you will be sorely disappointed.

Another show I've enjoyed watching is Sanctuary on Sci Fi. Guess I should have just made this a TV thread.

It was so different from the books it was painful. I can't watch it.

It is like the show was "Inspired" by the books. They took the names of the characters and very general plotline and ran with it.

I totally agree with this assessment.

I watched half the first episode before I had to turn it off. It's horribly acted and even more horribly written. I also can't believe what they did to Zed, or how much worse than all the other characters he's performed. OMFG.

This. I got through about 20 minutes of the first episode, and got so angry that they butchered it so badly that I shut it off. They pussified Richard, disassociated him with Zed altogether and turned him into a sort of Obi Wan Kenobi type hermit instead of basically Richard's friend and mentor.

Kahlan was sort of how I pictured in the first book, but they took the story and kind of mashed it together with a David Eddings style approach, completely ignoring the fact that they were about to alienate their guaranteed viewership of people who actually read and enjoyed the books. They instead opted to aim for undersexed daytime-soap-watching american idol fanboys as their primary viewerbase in my opinion.

I watched the 1st 7 episodes out of boreom one day it's cheesey fun. I never read the book but I think I enjoy it because it reminds me of Hercules which I watched as a kid (I know it's by the same guy).

Yeah, I've never read the books but I'm enjoying the show. "Cheesy" is exactly the right term but i'm enjoying it because of that.

I wish instead of "cheesy," it was "campy" like Xena used to be.

Every time I see this thread I read "The Legend of the Skeeter"

That thread would be full of epic win.

This is making me want to reread the first three books. I think the Stone of Tears was my favorite, though I'm having trouble keeping them all straight in my memory. Some of my favorite parts are, in no particular order:

1) when Richard is on his way to the Palace of the Prophets and ends up fighting an entire tribe of blademasters because he refuses to take part in a ritual sacrifice. This is when he starts to realize the depth of his prophetic title, "the bringer of death" and begins to recognize the full power of his bond with the sword of truth. It's an awesome Neo-like scene, only with more swords.

2) when he arrives at the Palace, and his first action is to publicly cut his arm open, making a blood oath in front of hundreds of wizards and sisters to lay waste to the palace of the prophets if they get in the way of him accomplishing learning to control his gift and returning to Khalan. Balls of steel, let me tell ya.

I dunno. There are many more. What parts of the books did you guys like?

I liked a lot of the parts with Warren I think it was at the Palace of Prophets, and some of the parts where they were at the capitol city, but as I got further and further through the series, I really found that everything was too one dimensional, especially once I started reading the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Goodkind seemed to have gotten into a pattern in all of his books that was just blatantly obvious to me after a while.

1. Shit seems cool. Problem Happens.
2. Person A tries to fix problem. Fails
3. Person B tries to fix problem. Fails
4. Person C tries to fix problem. Fails
5. Person D tries to fix problem. Fails
6. Person E tries to fix problem. Fails
7. Richard shows up. Richard has some magical revelation. Fixes problem.

After a while all of the other characters just seem like filler to me, because the only person in the world that can fix anything is Richard.

The series on the whole I did enjoy, but after a while a lot of characters seemed one dimensional in comparison to some other series'.

To a degree, true, but I dunno, I like Kahlan, Cara and Nicci.

Cara and Nicci both grew a lot during the books, and I got chills at the end of Phantom when she put Richard into the game. Cara falling in love was poignant, and earlier, when Raina died from the plague after learning to tame chipmunks, i had a few tears in my eye.

Kahlan grew earlier in the series when she took command of the army in Faith of the Fallen (which is by far one of my favorite books ever) and did whatever was needed to bleed out the enemy.

I dunno, I loved this series, had two books that were a lot of bridge and exposition to get us to the next stage, but overall, was great.

So if Rahl's dead what are they going to do for Season 2!?

They've got like 8 more books to draw from. I think they'll be alright.

Fuck this show. Fuck the people with the temerity to screw with the books. Fuck the actors doing a poor job.

The books I liked even if they weren't the best. But when you fuck them up this much, you should be put down.

At the least I think all the book lovers should unite and sue them to take away the title/character names and whatnot. They wanna make a stupid show that doesn't follow the books, then they can make up their own damn story. Oh wait they already did, but they weren't original enough to come up with their own names.

I like the show, it's a little cheezy, but I dig it. I haven't read the books though.
