I've been training to walk the Inca trail in Peru, so I walk home about 6 miles from DC to Northern VA. Tonight my water froze into an ice chip state and all the layers I was wearing (3 on the bottom, 4 on top) was creating a lot of static. Whenever I shifted my backpack to get my water I was getting shocked by my headphones. It was a bizarre sensation that didn't feel all that bad.

I took my dog for a walk this evening and when we got back he has drool-cicles hanging off his muzzle. Gross, but kind of cute. Also, it would appear that frozen deer poop is even more delicious than fresh.

I went on a camping trip with some martial arts buddies a couple years back. The guy organizing the trip stated it would be warm and sunny and the campsite was approximately a 45 minute hike through a forest. I had just injured my knee and for whatever reason the guy organizing the trip managed to talk me into going anyway. In retrospect, this was not one of my wiser decisions I've made.
It was not sunny--in fact, it was pouring freezing rain and there was a lot of wind. We packed warm weather clothing. When we finished the hike (which turned out to be 3 hours, not 45 minutes, and in a very upward, muddy direction), we got very cold very quickly and set the tent in the dark. We set the tent inside-out. We shook out as much water as we could, broke it down, and re-set the tent correctly. My hands were numb and that made it really hard to get the damn thing set.
There was water all over the inside of the tent. The group of 3 that I was with ended up stripping down and changing into our only set of dry clothes (which, like I said, were warm weather clothes), ate a cold dinner, and had to cuddle up and share body heat. I had to cuddle with the bastard responsible for this trip who, by the way, also was getting over a case of strep throat.
Somebody didn't secure the rainguard properly, so during the night, it got blown partially off and water began dripping on us. After a lot of talking about the stupid matter, we finally decided I would go out and fix it. Later, after one of the guys stepped out to take a piss, he didn't close the tent flap all of the way (unbeknownst to myself and the other fellow), so a little while later, I woke up and the strep-throat guy is asking me "hey is that your foot?" to which I reply "no, this is my foot,"
"WHAT THE FUCK?!" he screamed. He sat up quickly and threw the sleeping bag off and then something proceeded to scurry out of the tent. New rule : close the fucking tent flap when you come back in after taking a piss!!
It was a pretty horrible night. The next day it snowed on us and we decided we were done camping since we were now out of dry clothes and feeling a strong sense of mortality. I spent the next week sick at home with strep and with a swollen knee.

The majority of homes and buildings in Florida are all air conditioned, though. In other areas that isn't the case. When I lived in Chicago two summers ago, the apartment was not air conditioned. When I moved to Lansing, Michigan, the apartment was not air conditioned. I visited my friend in Boston a few years ago on the hottest week of the year; her apartment and very few of the places we went were air conditioned.
I lived in Florida until I was 22; I know it's hot. But at least you can cool down.

and we only ran our A/C like 4 times this year.
All windows open and several fans do it nicely once you adjust. Otherwise you have a $400 power bill opposed to a $100.

I will say, yes, there is air conditioning in Chicago. I honestly think Chicago summers are worse heat-wise than Phoenix. At least there you KNOW it's freakin' hot in the summer, you stay indoors in the AC until the sun goes down and then play outside. Chicago, just slimey. Ugh.
I lived in Hyde Park, close to UC. But half of the places I looked at didn't have AC either.

At least you guys get the ocean effect and a breeze once a while in the summer. Here in STL we have near 100 degree with 100% humidity for a lot of the summer. Then, five or six months later we get days like yesterday where the high was 8 degrees F.
I will never understand people who say they miss having all four seasons. Fuck that, I'd rather live in San Diego.

Here is my story...
I was walking to my car this morning to go to work and I was wearing a short sleeve shirt, I was thinking to myself "what a nice day"... then around lunch time I go to my car again and it was FREAKING 62 outside... I was like "wtf it is f'ing cold".

It’s been -10C here in DC. The only time I ever complain about the weather its when its cold. Snowy days and still days I can manage but windy cold is the absolute worst.
I love concentrated city life too much to move to warm sprawls like Florida or LA. The west and south don’t have cities like the north and northeast.
With wind chill, it was -3 here last night. I still sleep with my fan on though. (and the heater) I like the noise and the air circulating. That's my most thrilling cold story. (yes it sucked)

I live in Ohio, and while I agree its cold... I grew up in Montana, in a house with no airconditioning, heat only on the bottom level, and my room was in a converted attic where most of the insulation was either gone, or settled to the bottom of the walls.
In the winter... I was FUCKING COLD (-32 outside... I was lucky for it to be 32 in my room).
In summer... I was FUCKING HOT (102 outside... well, you get the idea)
Only saver, it was dry heat/cold versus the wet shit you guys get out here (also it was the middle of the state where you get the chinook winds through and its like that for only a few days versus the whole season)
Now I have heating AND airconditioning. Yay for doing better than my parents!

It's been negative 20 here in the mornings.. about ten degrees less up in the mountain where I work. I wear my ski goggles and wrap a scarf around my face to trek from my car all the way up to the restaurant.. I have to go into our huge walk-in freezer a few minutes after I get in, and I know it's bad when the walk in freezer feels way warmer (only -5!!!) than it was outside.
The shitty part is that no one comes to ski so I end up baking a ton of stuff and not having any of it used. Not that I blame people.. wind burn fucking sucks.

Temp was minus 35 but I wasnt feeling it because we had to climb a mountain that day in full gear w/ my 249 and I was passed the fuck out. Anywayz I woke hearing my giant 6ft retard of a battle buddy screaming at the top of his lungs in Alabama twang FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE!!
So I scramble out of my sleeping bag in my underwear and start rolling away from the blaze cradling my gun and trying to keep my glasses on my face. I really dont know what I was thinking. I was rolling naked in snow. But I wasnt the only one I guess. ><
Palmer, the aforementioned overly excited Alabama mammoth was too busy trying to save his gear.....barefoot. He never did stop yelling FIRE! at the top of his lungs.
Above the noise of the fire and what appears to be a JETSTREAM COMMERCIAL AIRLINE landing on our heads I hear my E7 screaming in Puerto Rican at somebody and I'm pretty sure I hear a fight breaking out.
So I dont realize it yet but I was in the beginning stages of hypothermia. I was in shock. I was barely cold. I pulled one of the fleece layers over my legs, managed to get some dry socks on my feet and pulled on my snowboots. In the next 30 seconds I had put a teeshirt on, slung my weapon across my back and dried my glasses off.
Finally I looked around to see what had happened.
Some stupid fucking idiots in a helicopter had tried to land on our heads in the night during a training excercise. They blew our tent up into the air, knocking the pipes off the arctic heater and burning up two sleeping bags, a truck mechanics duffle and some MRE's in the process. So my awesome hero of a Platoon Sergeant had risen from his sleep like some demon from hell and just started swinging at who ever came out of the copter.
It is pretty much the most hilarious thing that has ever happened to me. And every time I see/chat with Palmer I try my hardest to imitate an Alabama accent well enough to yell FIRE FIRE FIRE FIRE at the top of my lungs.

This afternoon the local NBC affiliate posted about how this storm would be a record-setter for Richmond, being not only a snowstorm in December but also one predicted to dump 4+" on the metro area. Of course, as of the 6pm news, there's now talk about warmer air in the upper atmosphere that could--naturally!--give us more mixed crap than snow.
I'm still happy though: my front yard is now totally white, and our street has a white sheen finally. (Yeah, I lost out on 8 hours of work tomorrow, but I've been having so many classes cancel due to lack of registrations that at least I've got reason to fully enjoy this free day!)

We got around 20 inches out in Chantilly.
I spent most of today clearing the driveway and my neighbor's. Somehow, craploads of snow was a lot more fun when I was a kid.

I've shoveled so much snow today, my body aches like crazy. I also repeatedly had to push the woman's vehicle out of the snow. WTF was I thinking bringing a floridian up here? She can't drive in the snow for shit.

Aaaaand that's why I left. I mean, it was a blustery 45 in only mostly-sunny Florida today, but all of life is suffering. I brought a Masshole back down here with meg and got her licensed to drive for the first time. I am AntiFury.
And hey, I was a Floridian/Alabamian in Massachusetts for four years, and I did fine in the snow. Had four-wheel drive, but it didn't help on ice. I really feel for you guys right now. I also feel warm.

Ice/sleet predicted for the next 4 days here. That, coupled with me being car-less until I can get a new rim, leaves a distinct possibility that I will be sitting in my house alone on X-mas.
And that's my cold weather story.
My life has turned into a freaking train wreck.

Other than the power being out for like a week (sucked) I managed to stab myself in the arm (carving out the wick from a candle in the dark) during out last solid hit here in Tampa bay. 2004ish?
Not only are the parties great but I usually goto the beach and watch the idiots get shredded on oysters trying to surf.
It's fun to walk against the wind at like a 60 degree angle. Until you get decapitated by a street sign that is.
Remember, it's not how strong the wind blows..it's what the fucking wind blows.

Here we go again, forwarded to someone in my office from NOAA (edited):
You are receiving this message because my forecast team feels it is imperative for you to be aware that another round of high impact winter weather is slated to occur from Friday into Sunday across the I-95 corridor.
This event is likely to equal or exceed that of the December 19, 2009 storm and may resemble the March 18-22, 1958 storm in terms of duration and snowfall.
In that event, areas of Baltimore County received 4 feet of snow.
What you will read below will not be released publicly until Tuesday or perhaps Wednesday, and may contain some changes, but we are confident of our investigation thus far.
Baltimore, MD expects an historic snow event to occur during the weekend of February 5-6-7. Snow is likely to begin Friday and extend into Sunday.
Amounts across the eastern Mid-Atlantic may approach 24" by Saturday evening. Areas of elevation will see enhanced snowfall that may approach or
exceed 30". Several computer models already project nearly 2.0 inches of liquid equivalent for this storm, which at a basic 12:1 snow to water ratio would easily produce 2 feet or more.
This would shut down most roads and interstates and result in states of emergency from Virginia northward to Massachusetts for several days.
Meteorologists at the federal level have been releasing statements on this potential since Sunday afternoon, the text of which can be found at HPC, NOAA's Hydrometeorological Prediction Center.
Our information does not constitute an official statement nor do we claim to represent the National Weather Service. However, the NOAA agencies which serve the NWS have already made clear their belief this will be a high impact event for the I-95 corridor.
We believe that educators, administrators and county officials need to be closely monitoring this potential as it will have a high impact on the school
system for a long period of time following the storm.

Funny stuff coming from guy in ATLANTA. The big storms suck because you never know when the weather guy is going to fuck up, and next thing you know you're buried in 3 feet of snow with no power for 3 days. It pays to keep a few gallons of water and some candles/sterno/batteries/non-perishables handy so you don't have to do the grocery run every time there's a storm/zombie apocalypse.

Grocery stores would be the worse place to go in a zombie apocalypse. All that rotting meat would draw them wouldn't it?
Anyway, yeah! Bum rush the store when there is a flake of snow in the air!

What really sucks is when it just happens to be time for me to do normal grocery shopping anyway. Crazy people and their panic.
Can't wait for tomorrow, though. Last weekend's snow was too dry and powdery to go sledding down our driveway; this storm seems to be giving us perfect snow for that!

Considering it is still snowing now, I'd say I got at least 30 inches of snow this time compared to only about 20 in December. I guess the Saints being in the Superbowl really did cause hell to freeze over...or at least the level of hell that DC politicians reside in.

My mom and stepdad live in Lorton. Mom called me yesterday midday to see how we were doing down in Richmond, and mentioned my stepdad had gone out 3 times yesterday morning to clear off their cars, but came in so soaking wet after the 3rd time that hopefully he got the hint they're supposed to be buried in snow for a bit.

Blizzard conditions today until 7 pm
I lived in Manhattan during the blizzard of ’96. That was bad but the good thing about living in an urban area is that everyone gets around mainly on foot so its likely there is a bodega or bar open on your block or a few blocks away.
Out in suburbia... it sucks. You are lucky if you live off a main road but fucked if you live in a cul de sac off a side street. That said I have to hand it to the guys out there plowing the roads... the main routes are always generally clear. Getting to them is another issue.
This is the most snow we’ve had in Maryland since ’96. Everything is shut down.
Here are two pics from last Sunday. In the the first one I carved a path to my car up the driveway. Took about two hours.
The second one is three hours later. Have to say shovelling snow is a great workout. Upper, lower, core and cardio.

As someone that was in suburbia NY for that blizzard, I have to agree that it sucked. I did make a killing shoveling snow for my neighbors though.
