Am I better off with 6GB DDR3 1600MHz, or a 8gb ddr2?

What are you going to be doing with it?
Edit:
In most cases I'd say the DDR3 because you'll almost never use up the full 6 gigs. Unless you're doing something like graphical engineering and your render times are in question, in which case I'd say the DDR2.

Hehe, no, I'm getting a gaming rig. I have a buddy who's all about 8GB of ram but the rig I'm looking to get will have the 6gb ddr3.
The OS will be Vista 64 premium, the processor will be Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core), and the mobo EVGA X58 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset)
If I wanted the 8 I'd have to start over on the customization. I think the 6GB will be ok though.

Unless you mean she will personally come to my house and let me violate her indefinitely, then I'm afraid I'll have to pass on your offer.

I don't know anything about Crysis, but with WoW I can have 2 instances running at the same time and still have plenty of available RAM with only 2GB installed on my XP system. So in other words, WoW at least doesn't suck up extra memory when it's available.
I haven't tested it on my 4GB Vista system yet though.

Excellent.
Anyone have an opinion on the NVIDIA GTX 295?

Reports say that it gets a little hot under load and might be a fire hazard as an SLI. I don't know where you'd find space for an SLI setup though. It's the size of an encyclopedia.
Make sure you have a nice big case with good airflow.

I should be good. I'm not gonna overclock it either, just the processor.

I've maxed out 4 gigs gaming, but it took a LOT to do it. You'll be better off with the faster 6 than a slower 8 for what you want to do with it.

To be honest, I very much doubt the vast majority of people would notice a difference between DDR3 and DDR2.

I went with the 6GB DDR3. If was that or go with the 8GB DDR2 and then I'd have to change the whole config. DS offered a 12GB DDR3 as well but I didn't want to shell out another 350 for it.

I am in agreement with the consensus.
Go with the faster RAM.
