A Dallas man has died after reportedly playing a 30 hour session of online MMORPG Gemstone IV.

The 55-year-old man collapsed after playing the game at his home on the west side of town, according to Dallas police.
The man had not slept properly, and had eaten very little during his marathon session, said his wife.
The game reportedly takes over 7 years to win. Multi-player gaming is extremely popular thanks to the expansion of fast and widespread broadband networks.
The man, identified by his family name, Lee, started playing Gemstone in August 2008. He only paused playing to go to the toilet and for short periods of sleep, said the police.
We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a police official told the Reuters news agency.
He was found slumped down in his computer chair by his wife. Its also known that at the time of his death he was looking at a website where gamer girls post pictures of their breasts to excite and earn credit in the game.
The phenomenon of so called "gamer girls" is new to most people, but this game has attracted a larger percentage of female gamers than any in history.

I lol'd and thought the exact same thing. I hate when people call GS an MMO. Not even during peak years at peak times would I have called GS an MMO.

I hate when people call GS an MMO. Not even during peak years at peak times would I have called GS an MMO.

The definition of MMO doesn't really have anything to with how many people are actually logged on at any given time. If everyone quit WoW except 3 people, it would still be considered an MMO.

Let's take a look at Urban Dictionary entry #4:

4. MMO 2 up, 5 down love ithate it

MMO (emm emm oh)
noun. Informal.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game MMORPG
A game that can typically be played with only the left mouse button. Many cost money per month to play online, unlike other games. Requires minimal skill but maximum amount of time playing. Gameplay usually involves performing some simple action(s) thousands of times repeatedly to "level up".
"World of Warcraft is a great MMO, 15 dollars per month well-spent."

I don't care what someone entered into urban dictionary. Massively multiplayer = played by a massive amount of people.

edit: Oh and that definition says that an MMO can typically be played with only the left mouse button. That inherently = fail.

Methais

The urban dictionary part was a joke (even though it's pretty much true), and had nothing to do with what I was actually getting at.

The actual definition of MMO is basically a game that supports 4728390427 people in a persistent world. Even if nobody's actually playing.

And if you don't like it, well.....well click here (http://stickdeath.com/bme.swf).

I'd like to see Simu's hamsters support 4728390427 people. I would seriously like to see that. Their shit crashes when one of the techs lets a stiff fart off near the servers. Again, not an MMO.

Methais

So basically what you're saying is if 10,999,999 people all quit WoW tomorrow, leaving 1 person left playing, the game would no longer be an MMO?

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world. They are, however, not necessarily games played on personal computers. Most of the newer game consoles, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and Wii can access the Internet and may therefore run MMO games.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.

You can quote it as much as you want, but I still don't think hundreds or thousands of people is a massive number. This is my opinion, and why I laugh when people call GS an MMO. You aren't gonna change my opinion. :)

Tens of thousands? Yeah, sure. More than that? Most def.

Methais
01-10-2009, 04:35 AM
That may be your opinion, but it doesn't change the fact of what the definition of an MMO is.

That's the difference between fact and opinion. An opinion can be whatever you want. A fact is what it is regardless of one's opinion of it. Being color blind to blue doesn't make the sky not blue.

I never stated what I said was fact. I stated that:

That clearly states opinion.

Perhaps my definition of massive is a lot different than other people's definitions of massive. It still comes down to the fact that I don't believe Simu can support or has ever had or will ever have a massive number of players in their games. UNTIL HERO'S JOURNEY LOL.

Teach me your leetness so that I may spread rumors about my coworkers in a new and exciting format.

Yah, huh-lair-ee-us. I was going for it until the "7 years to win" part. Then the boobs confirmed the fak-uh-tude. Big lol's for Kitsun though. I think it is so sweet how trusting you are. You were very concerned about my tape-worm too. Nice that there are nice people out there still.

I knew it was fake when they showed the picture of the guy... didn't that guy die in a car accident and was talked about on the officials?

Also at the end, instead of providing a link he ended it with "AP" lol...

I guess that makes me the weiner!

Koala's look cute but I would hate to have to fight one.

Also, I knew it was fake when they said 30 hour session. Like you can't get something to eat, take a shower, walk the dogs, and go to the bathroom while your scripts are running.
