One of the wife's friends has a laptop that's shit the bed. She took it to Best Buy and Geek Squad said they didn't want to touch it, same with another place she went to. Basically they didn't want to tell her that her data is gone. She doesn't care she just wants a working laptop for school. I took it in and basically Vista is failing to load. Fine, reimage time. I break out the CDs that come with it and begin the reimage process. Vista gets loaded, requires reboots, first reboot it bombs. Comes up with:
Windows Boot Manager
Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer.
This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.
If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer.
File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
It's a Dell Inspiron 1525.
I've removed the CD-ROM, rebooted, same error.
Fun side note.... In order to even reimage this fucker I had to hit the BIOS and disable the Flash Module and change the SATA config from ACHI to ATA. Both of which are the opposite of factory standard. That plus the CD-ROM removal + continued error is leading me to believe toasted HDD.
Thoughts?
