Having missed his bus, a 6-year-old Virginia boy tried to drive to school in his family's sedan — and crashed.

State police say the boy suffered only minor injuries and eventually arrived at school after being evaluated at a local hospital. Police did not immediately return a call Tuesday asking who brought him there.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.

Police say the boy, who wasn't identified, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and started toward school while his mother was asleep.

He ran off the road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole. Police say he wasn't wearing a safety belt.

The incident remains under investigation.

How bad does homelife have to be that you'll steal a car to go to school?

My wife had a nervous breakdown because she missed the first day of the third grade.

Her parents had taken the family on vacation to a conference in San Diego and Lauren flipped the fuck out when she found out they wouldn't get back until like 6am the morning of the first day.

It's like an annual holiday tale.

As always, I want to know wtf his mother was doing asleep. I always wake up to get my kid ready for school, wait for the bus to come and get him. Also, I keep my keys out of sight, because I have a feeling my kid would do just this.

I also wonder why the mother was asleep. You don't leave a six year old unattended.

Damn... a close call of retroactive darwinism.

What about 2x6yr olds? That's like 12. I'm just taking notes here.

Given what you've told us your kids do to your house when you're awake... do you really want to let them run around while you're sleeping?

This is why I've turned their doorknob around so it locks from the outside. I lock those demons in every night.

Hmm. That goes in the "things to remember when I have kids" file, I think. In that case, sleep away. Until they get old enough to figure out how to pick the lock or climb out the window, that is.

I give them another 6 months on the former, 3 months on the later.

I hope they have a bathroom adjacent to their room...

Or at least a bucket.
