You need 61 training points to earn your next rank.
The Training Administrator told you to visit the master footpads for a lesson.
You have 14 repetitions remaining to complete this task.

>ask vigil about training in gambit
You ask Vigil about getting some training in Rogue Gambits.

Vigil pulls you aside for some instruction.

A single sconce illuminates the chamber, but doesn't provide much in the way of light. This looks to be a very good spot to quietly reflect or ponder on things. You also see Master Footpad Vigil.

Vigil says, "Obviously, there's gonna be some times where ya wanna snatch somethin' nearby without givin' up yer perfect hidin' spot. This is almost impossible with anything bulky, but small things like gems are a piece o' cake."

Vigil points out how to get close to an item without being spotted, then silently scoop it up. "It's important not to get too greedy," he says. "Better to get a slice of cake than none at all, yanno."

RGAMBIT STEALTH GET {item} [FROM {container}]

Roundtime: 3 sec.
You attempt to blend with the surroundings and feel confident that no one has noticed your doing so.
>rgam stealth get sap from backp
You remove a violet sapphire from in your brown leather backpack.

>unhide
You do not believe anyone noticed you slip out of hiding.
>rgam stealth get sap from backp
Just how stealthy are you trying to be? You're not even hidden!

Drop an item on the ground and pick it up.

Using STEALTH GET on a container you're wearing is no different from just using GET, since no one can see you do it anyway.

So with audience reps?

Just drop the gem on the ground? Hope nobody picks it up?

Doesn't have to be a gem. Can be some herbage or a smooth stone/doorknob.

Hahaha, I hadn't seen that, that was hilarious. What an awesome way to make someone stop talking to you.

Okay, here's another one that has me scratching my head...

The instructions were:

DeLuca assays you with a critical eye and says, "Let's find you something to do to earn a rank in Lock Mastery." DeLuca rubs his chin thoughtfully, then continues, "Whatever ya do, it's important to look good while yer doin' it, and from where I'm standin', yer off to a slow start. Go out and practice openin' some boxes with yer latest trick for an audience. Be sure and get some that are a decent challenge for ya." DeLuca also adds, "Repeat this 5 times."

Now, the only trick I know so far is SPIN, so I sat in the east tower opening boxes with: LMASTER PTRICK SPIN BOX for an hour or so and didn't get a single rep, as far as I could tell from messaging.

Now, am I doing something wrong altogether? Or were the boxes just not hard enough? How do you tell if a lock is "challenging" for you? Is it a flat number, or depend on the roll you need to open it, or what? How many people does it take to make an audience?

:help:

Any assistance appreciated.

depends on how much training you have in locksmithery, hun. how many ranks do you have?

and you have to have 5 people (unhidden) in the room--aside from you--for an audience. Rogue guild members count as 2 people. Rogue Guildmasters count as 3 people.

Make sure that:
1) The lock is hard enough.
2) You're using at least the minimum quality of lockpick required for you to get reps.
3) You have a sufficient audience.

There's not enough information to tell what's wrong.

So it sounds like the lock needs to be up in the -400 range (that's about as high as I can get with a good roll), and...

I've been using a copper lockpick on the theory that it works like exp, i.e. the lower the lockpick the more credit you get for the lock, but I get the message

"You feel like the red copper lockpick is probably too low in quality to be worthy of your vast expertise."

So I need to be using a better lockpick, have 5 people there (or the equivalent in guild members/masters), and don't expect a rep on anything under, oh, -350 or so.

Oh, and I have 40 ranks in Picking.

Paying to much money for wasting time on an ancient and incomplete text game?

You need to be using a gold lockpick or higher. Tsoran has it broken down by ranks here: http://tsoran.com/lm.html

One thing that helps is to break your lockpick and repair it. This lowers the modifier and lets you pick smaller locks than with a fresh pick. If you break a lockpick too many times it will stop working, but it helps a lot once you get into the better material lockpicks. I recommend asking a master to repair it for you, since it will take ~60 seconds for them to repair it, as opposed to hours for the NPC locksmith.

This might be a waste of time for the gold lockpicks, but once you're up to rolaren and veniom, yeah, it helps quite a bit.
